Would there be a way to block IPs that have previously visited Reddit?
Let's say I wanted to start a website and did not want Reddit users to be able to access it, or any traffic from Reddit itself, would it be possible to filter them based on their browsing history?
Obviously this would be very easily circumvented by anyone with a modicum of IT knowledge but it would filter out the majority.

>>52169385

>implying everyone on /g/ doesn't have reddit open in the next tab

Stop lying to yourself.
>>
>>52169385
No, that would be a massive privacy leak from browsers.

The best you could do is block users when they use a Reddit referer but that's easy to break.
>>
>>52169396

Reddit is not bad as a news aggregator if you unsubscribe from the bad defaults.

pro tip: sort the content by "controversial" to see the content they dont want you to see
>>
>>52169385
No. And get back in Nazi Germany you fascist.
>>
The easiest way would be to import IP addresses from the Reddit database into your own database and cross-check the visitor's IP with the ones in your database. It's not 100% reliable because a lot of people have dynamic IPs but it does the job pretty well.

You also need to make sure to code a manual override incase of false positives so that anyone caught in the ban can inform you that they don't use Reddit.
>>
>>52169431
No you misunderstand, I want to prevent people who use Reddit from accessing my website entirely, if there is a way to do that.

I can already fairly easily IP ban people who follow referral links from domains owned by Reddit.

>>52169453
That sounds useful, are those records publicly accessible?

Is it impossible to believe that some people just don't like Reddit and don't find the community and level of discourse acceptable?

Reddit is extremely large and there are very few places now where you can be completely free of people from those communities, should you not desire to associate with them.
>>
>>52169545

Yes, Reddit and 4chan have virtually identical demographics. Chances are the vast majority of the users of both sites are the same people.

Nerds just seem to get a superiority complex when they visit 4chan, and think they're part of some super secret elite club, and pretending they never look at Reddit, when they usually check it daily.

Stop lying to yourself and everyone else, faggot.
>>
The only feasible way is to check their cookies.
Find out what kind of cookies Reddit sets. Then on your website you look if the user has any of those cookies.
Pretty simple, obviously not 100% reliable.
>>
>>52169555
You're being a perfect example of why I would like to prevent the Reddit community from accessing my website.

He's kind of right, Reddit has a fairly large population of far-right reactionary undergraduate kiddos just like 4chan, /g/ itself probably has up to 50% overlap with Reddit judging by the quality of the catalog at any given time, especially during Ameritard power hour.

No sensible person on 4chan has ever considered this site a "secret club." It's a website accessible by everyone for fucks sake.
>Stop lying to yourself and everyone else, faggot.

I don't really care if X subreddit or /r/Y is so much better than Z, or if you think certain communities behave better than others.
I simply want to IP ban any poster that has Reddit in their browsing history, or has been referred from a domain owned by Reddit, regardless of what subreddits they frequent or what other sites they post on.
Those restrictions would probably be fairly simple to circumvent, but would keep out the worst of the people I'm trying to avoid.
>>
>>52169638

>>
I want reddit whining fags to leave this board permanently.
>buh buh you can't use two particular sites at the same time waaah
Reddit is pretty much the best tech support forum out there right now. Meanwhile /g/ is good for... frogposting and desktop ricing threads.
>>
>>52169385
You can't do that in a straightforward manner.

You might be able to hack something together using JS, but it wouldn't be bullet proof
Check if this is a new user by IP
Create img tag
Get current time (t1)
Set img tag's src to the url of the reddit logo image, hosted on reddit
Get current time (t2)
If t2 - t1 < (some threshold value), assume the browser had already cached the image and attempt to block entry

Of course since its JS it would be trivial to circumvent, but if the user was unaware this was happening you could then shoot off a request that adds their IP to a blacklist on your http server.

Except nobody has said that even once in this thread, infact I have made no positive or negative comparison between 4chan and Reddit, that's an assumption you've made based on some reactionary desire to take sides in a feud of your own invention.
This attitude that you display is the very reason I want to prevent you and people you associate with from accessing my content and participating in my community, because I believe it's toxic.
Really I don't need any further justification of what I'm trying to accomplish than the posts by Reddit users in this thread.

>>52169743
The fact that opnions (messages there) can be votet up or down is nothing good. The voting itself isn't the problem actually. The real problem is, that the comments are getting literally UP or DOWN with this, meaning your post changes position in the thread so that YOUR very special comment doesn't appear anymore because at a specific amount of downvotes it gets spoilered to a single short line which can also be easily overread.
Ah sorry english isn't my motherlanguage if I made some mistakes here and there.

I was just spitballing. Care to elaborate?
I know it's pretty shit already because it relies on JS which can be disabled. The user could also just send a spoofed "pass" result to the server. It would also be shoddy because you would need to pick an arbitrary value for the cache timeout threshold, which could result in false positives.

Is there anything fundamentally wrong with it though? Am I making bad assumptions about how cached images in browsers work across domains?
>>
>>52169787
As has been said in the past. Using js as part of an auth check to access their cookie/LSO store will be your best bet. Going any further puts you into legal grey and black areas.

I really wouldn't mind if Reddit users didn't spill over into my community and basically destroy the level of discourse. I welcome users who are respectful and helpful, and who follow the rules.
But Reddit users are confrontational, divisive and disruptive, and, as they have prominently displayed in this thread, extremely reactionary.
I've attempted to ignore them, then I've attempted to manage them internally through moderation, then as a reaction to this some fifth column of Reddit users took down my site's forum with a DDOS attack for several days.
I know who did it because they boasted about it after the fact.
They've basically ruined my website's means of providing support to customers and our professional image, all because I attempted to curb their disruptive behavior, which consisted mostly of off-topic discussions, memes, and intentionally providing biased advice.

Now I'm tired of it and I don't want them to be able to access my community at all because it's wasting my time and losing me money.
I run a small business, I don't have the resources to battle Reddit because I won't let them shitpost about Nvidia in the customer advice forum.

I know exactly two decent tech related subreddits and they're kinda obscure with very few users.
Any moderately popular sub will be full of garbage.

Reddit is full of MS shills, for example (it's even worse than /g/). You pretty much cannot discuss any MS product in an objective way. "Should I upgrade to Windows 10?" "Sure, it's much better and faster and all the paranoia about privacy is just FUD" --> 500 upvotes.

No. My workmates are redditors. Dear lord. How do I describe it; they have this entry level aura about them. Like they believe reddit to be the coolest hub of the internet. They genuinely believe it. That any advice or news or opinion from reddit is correct. It's disgustingly uneducated, conforming, and shallow. Like that episode on It's always sunny where Charlie reads a book on law and believes he's a qualified lawyer. It used to be possible to check if people had been to certain websites by placing links to the websites on a page and using a snippet of Javascript to see if the color of the link matched whatever the browser's default "visited" link color was. No you don't have access to the browser history. That's how it should be.

The only thing you can do is block by referer header, but its so easily disabled or bypassed so I don't think it will do what you want.

You could try making a request to a reddit page that would redirect if not logged in or something similar. If it doesn't redirect then its a reddit user. I'm sure reddit has a api, it seems everyone does these days, so check that. Browser security might hamper this.

It's a conflict of philosophy. 4chan values Cultural Capital above all else. Everything that happens here is destroyed eventually and if you weren't there you won't get it and we won't tell you. If you were, you now share something in common with the people in your community. That's it. That's where the value comes from.

Reddit, on the other hand, has a point system awarded for reposting second-hand clickbait. "Content Aggregators" have been the enemy of content creators since they were called ebaumsworld.

Hey faggots, can you stfu
>>
>>52170280
You first friend.
>>
>>52170142
Well I'm not generalizing, because what is happening ITT?
Read the thread.
A discussion is being derailed by Reddit posters, in exactly the same manner they do so on my forums.
It's always the same pattern.
They provide some bad advice, or engage in off-topic discussion, myself or a moderator intercedes and requests that they stop, then the shitposting and derailing begins.
God forbid Reddit itself should be mentioned or they act like a family member has been assaulted and actually organize raids and DDOS attacks.
It's only after many, many, many incidents that I've come to correctly associate this behavior with Reddit's community, and threads like this further reinforce that association.

Here's an incident that happened recently that's a great example:

A potential customer asks for advice on a light server build, before myself or any staff can respond, a thread is well under way advising an i3 and a GTX 970, with Windows 10.
Obviously that is not at all what the customer needs, and as a moderator I remove their posts and list a Xeon build with AMD64 Ubuntu that has been well received in the past.
Not only do the posters take offense to me removing their incredibly biased and misinformed posts, but they also mistake the term "AMD64 Ubuntu" to mean I'm suggesting an AMD system over an Intel system, which obviously was not the case.
This then turns into a brand flamewar, the customer is nowhere to be fucking seen because my customer support forum now looks like LinusTechTips, I'm trying to ban people left and right to maintain some order, and somehow these assholes get it into their heads that I deserve some kind of retribution for "censoring" them and so enlist an entire subreddit to spam my forums with bullshit.

I've long passed the point where Reddit was given a chance to follow the rules.

All because you have this absurd groupthink mentality Reddit fosters where consensus is the only thing that matters and if enough people agree with you it becomes fact, and you'll happily destroy any community that dissents through sheer numbers.
I don't even know how you faggots found my comparatively small supplier but you're ruining my livelihood and I have employees.
The worst thing is that because I don't like the website you use, through no fault of my own by the way, just as a reaction to your unprovoked bullshit, that my business somehow deserves to be affected and I deserve to lose money because I dare to question the Reddit overmind and attempt to preserve some professionalism in my support system.
You people think you're the intellectual cream of the internet crop at the forefront of the social revolution but you're worse than 4chan has ever been, at least if I was being raided by /b/ circa 2008 they'd be doing it because it was funny, not because they felt they had a right to harm my business for daring to disagree with them.
