the case claims to fit three 3.5" HDDs...
any tips for cable management? also how do I know which of the two wires for the power and reset switches is the ground? They are paired and the only distinction is a faint ∆ on one half of the plug. Am I fucked if I did it wrong? (I know O about electrical circuits/engineering)

>>
>>52149276
check the manual that came with the case, might provide some insight. though if you narrow it down to power and ground, just guess and press the power button. the worst that will happen is that you will kill the HDD activity LED in the front.

It's going to have lots of storage and it's going to be attached to the network. So I guess? It's also going to be a music server, a htpc, a radio station, maybe host some light web services.

Stupid question time, while I'm relatively sober, wtf with these plugs? They come from the chassis fan and they have one pin less than the motherboard connectors I think, so they don't do speed control? What's with the herm power plug?
>>
>>52149613
Molex connector. Only 2 pins are needed for power whilst the third and in sum cases fourth are for speed sense and PWM speed control.

Do I plug the three pin female plug into the 4pin chassis fan mobo connector, the 3pin power fan mobo connector, or do I use the attached adapter to connect it directly to the PSU?

>>52149978
One of the big 4 pins goes to the PSU whilst the fan connects to the smaller one. Do not connect anything on that adapter to the motherboard.

Its just a black version of this right?
>>
>>52150021
Correct. So is the female (big) power plug for connecting other things that need power?
>>
>>52150082
Exactly, its so you can daisy chain things and not lose a whole power supply output to just that one fan.
>>
>>52149978
I read your post wrong. I'd plug the case fan into the motherboard 3 pin connector since that allows you to read the fans RPM from the bios any desktop, but the fan will work which ever way you do it. You just won't get RPM readouts when connected to the PSU since the yellow wire doesn't get connected to anything.
>>
>>52147995
where i used to work we used to name the servers after breweries: avery, twisted pine, etc. maybe you could name it 'lefthand'
>>
>>52150319
Ah. Ok, that might make cable management a little easier.

>>52150400
My first computers had a Lewis Carroll theme: snark, bandersnatch, cheshire, alice. Right now I have an acer netbook (gulik) and an X200 (wilde). My last server was the asscat. I recently watched nichijou so I'm leaning towards sakamoto-san to continue the cat theme, but that seems too easy...
>>
>>52150510
Yeah, plus molex connectors do my fucking nut in. I've got lots of fans in my case and the ones that run on molex adapters always make maintenance a nightmare because the connectors always slip out of the plastic.
>>
>>52149276
After wondering that myself I eventually found that ∆ represents +

>>52150616
So using my powers of intuition I plugged the ∆ on the reset button and power button cable pairs into the reset # and power #, respectively. The pin that didn't have ∆ in each pair went to a ground connector. This is good?

For the buttons it doesn't matter which way you connect them, you're simply bridging a circuit with the switch. That's why + and - aren't indicated.

>>52150917
So since it's a switch, does it even matter which side plugs into what?

Switches are non polarized whilst the LED's will only work one way around. If they don't light up then you've got the polarity reversed and in that case just switch the wires over.

So pushed the button like, five times, nothing happened, took the cover off, took off the top HDD rack and the PSU, double checked all the connections, put it back together and now I got this shit :D

>>52151261
Correct. I am quite pleased, it's extremely compact and no space wasted. Left side can mount 1 HDD or 2 ssds, top can mount two HDDs or ssd, and there's even room for a video card and/or extra side fan instead of the side drives. Much smaller than I expected.

I kinda "splurged" on the CPU since it was going to be a gift and I want to try hooking it up to my dj setup and run a live visualiser. I figure if my midrange nvidia card from 15 years ago could run soundspectrum gforce smoothly with tons of filters back in the day, a modern budget amd apu could do something similar, right?

>Slackware

Given what happened to Ian Murdock, we'll probably soon hear that Pat decided to either adopt systemd or discontinue the distro. The writing's on the wall now, and probably no distro maintainer wants to be a dead-man-walking.
>>
>>52151844
There is no "th" phoneme in Russian, and the most commonly substituted consonant is "z". Remember that if you want to try doing a passable Russian accent.

IF AND WHEN Patrick decides to adopt systemd, it will only be because it would have become halal by orthodox unix standards. Keep in mind that for years Slackware doesn't even officially support/provide GNOME. I give it at least another 10 years before systemd becomes the Slackware default, if it ever happens.

Well we still don't know how deep the rabbit hole that is the true circumstances of Ian's death goes (neither is it clear whether we'll find out ever).

As for Slackware vs systemd, just vote in this poll:

http://strawpoll.me/6101272/r
>>
>>52152124
Actual poll link is http://strawpoll.me/6101272/ (the other one lead to the results).
>>
>>52152124
I'm waiting to see what details come out about ian. very eerie, and most likely it will get swept under the rug and no information will be made public "out of respect for his family". Patrick has health issues too, but I think there are definitely some candidates to be his successor if it comes to that. Ian, afaik (I pay very little attention to Debian in general) was not a major part of ongoing Debian development. Iirc they are all socialists over there and rule by community consensus.

As for systemd, I think realistically, if it does become part of the distro it will go in /extra and sit there like grub, bash-autocomplete, chrome, wicd, and all the other shit Slackware doesn't really need but some people like. Although idk how hard it would be to maintain separate scripts and configs for two different init systems. Bottom line is nobody who already uses Slackware really needs it, and Slackware already used bsd-style scripts when all the other distros favored sys-v, so even if now everyone is switching to systemd I don't think that will cause any ripples in the Slackware community.
