How much more tactile is a Novatouch compared to an MX Brown? An MX Clear?
What's the mouse quality RGB keyboard? I've used Cherry Reds, Browns, and Blues, and I like the Blues the most.
Should I get a Corsair Strafe RGB or a Ducky Shine 5?
whats a decent non-mech gaming keyboard with backlight for around 40-50 bucks?

I do a lot of CAD/rendering stuff at work and I swear by ball mice. If you need super accurate cursor control and convenient hotkeys they are just better than regular mice.

Good when your space is restricted, like in labs.

>>52148161

I wouldn't though. The original ball is smoother.
Anyone who buys clacks or any artisan keycaps for more then the artisan charged is being used and is perpetuating a small cadre of thieves and speculators.
I'm afraid my neighbors (people who live in apartments behind the wall) would kill me if I start to use MX blue at night.
>>52149991
Put on o-rings. Once you remove the clacks, the clicks are (almost) inaudible past the first wall.
>>52149120
So it's a lot more tactile than a cherry MX clear?

A good, 90s era rubber dome, but a rubber dome for sure.

>>52150155
Hard to say whether Topres are more or less tactile than clears, it also depends on which weight of Topre you got.
A clear has a strong tactile bump that ends at the actuation point.
A Topre has a tactile bump that peaks at the actuation point and ends almost all the way down.
>>52149991
The trick is to put the keyboard on top of something soft so that noise won't transfer much. I used to use pic related at work (clears) and it was loud as fuck because even though clears aren't really noisy, the fact that the plate touches the desk made the desk act as a big speaker. I resorted to putting some cloth underneath it.
I can't decide between the hhkb and fc660c
>>52152246
660c
HHKB is a total meme layout.
No reason to not include buttons in the bottom corners when they had to split the top-right button due to not having enough physical buttons.
Why do keyset designers for SP keep churning out DSA and SA sets yet don't give a fuck about DCS? Both of those profiles are garbage and shouldn't be used on a modern keyboard.
>>52152305

But true designer-made keysets beyond simple color variations are hard to come by without paying exorbitantly for something like GMK. (SP's Gorton Modified is also my favorite font). It's absurd because GBs in 2012-2013 were full of great keysets that were all discontinued, and DCS Midnight sucks.
>>52152593
I hear you there. I finally got Soware and R4 Retro which both came out back in the day. Literally waited about 3 years combined for these. R4 Retro is from 7bit which took 2 fucking years to ship. I got lucky as fuck scoring the Soware set from the owner of Originitive on the r/mk classifieds. Then it got lost in the mail for 2 months.

I have a 55g Topre board and used to use Browns. The Topre board is MUCH more tactile, to the point that using it makes the Browns feel almost linear by comparison.
The Novatouch is 45g though, which I have not tried. Your results may vary.

>>52153639
holy fucking shit. I was on Unicomp's site less than a year ago and it was an ugly mess, but the keyboards they had were solid and cheap. I just went on and they've changed everything to full-on keyboard enthusiast marketing.
They're selling the regular endurapro for 105 bucks! That thing was 70 months ago! Now they have a "Small batch, *Limited Editions!*" section full of GeekHack keys and some other nonsense. When did they realize their market potential?
That genuinely frustrates me. They were honestly the best place I could go when I had to change offices and resuit all of our keyboards. Everybody loved them, and they were a good deal. If I end up doing something like that again, I'll end up paying like crazy because it's a "niche market" now. God dammit.
>>52153703
>Now they have a "Small batch, *Limited Editions!*"

I guess that's a plus. I've only had one issue with a keyboard that had a broken stab on delivery. They were very fast to correct the problem and didn't leave me with one less keyboard while they shipped the new one. I was always a huge fan of their low prices, great customer service, and great build quality. It makes sense that their prices went up, I'm just bummed out I guess. Thankfully those things last forever and I doubt I'll need to replace one any time soon.

Correct! Though, it's a small office and there are mainly two employees per room; 11 people excluding myself. I needed to get new machines for the place, so I figured I'd get something almost guaranteed to last. I've heard positive reviews from multiple employees about how great they feel to type on. I'm sure somebody will get annoyed at some point, but they're at work, and if it really bothers them, they're welcome to grab an old keyboard from the supply room.

I want a small keyboard I can use from the sofa for controlling my laptop when I connect it to the TV for watching/playing/whatever.
I've been looking for compact membrane keyboards but they seem very low-quality, and a mechanical one would be too heavy (to put it on my laps for example) and expensive.
What I'd want would be a decent-quality small membrane keyboard (so that it can be light) with at least 4-key rollover to play games comfortably. Any suggestions?

Ordered Sunday, they shipped Monday at 19 Osaka time so Monday morning (9 am) for us.
Then Monday night (half past midnight of Tuesday in Japan) it apparently left the country.
>>52157157
Damn. I hope they're just really busy and that they did not actually totally forget about me or something.
>>52157174
I read somewhere (maybe the description page) that they only ship on selected days of the week like Monday Wednesday and Friday, plus yeah I think new years eve plays a role.
I'd start to worry on Jan 4th if I were you.
>>52157266
Thanks. I'm not horribly worried yet, I'm just horribly impatient when waiting for a new toy to play with.
I have Cherry mx blues and when I press the key slow I can feel the tactile bump but when I type fast I can almost barely feel it but I can hear it.
Was I memed? Should I have gotten greens instead like how clears are better than Browns?
>>52151941
mmm
>>52157407
>Should I have gotten greens instead
You probably should have.
I went from browns to clears, and they are so much better. I didn't ever have the pleasure of trying greens on a full size keyboard, but I feel pretty much the same about greens and blues. Blues are just a weak mess compared to stiff, superior greens.
Hell, I would've gotten greens if it weren't for the fact that they are so horribly noisy. They feel so fucking crisp.
>>52157407
You should lose weight.
You probably have sausage fingers.
>>52153638
Then don't spill anything on it you clumsy fuck
>>52153638
I constantly have bottled water in my arms reach, drink beer and eat stuff every so often at my desk, and I have not once spilled something on any keyboard I've ever had.
I don't know how people manage to spill their stuff. Don't keep your drink right beside your keyboard and don't watch cat videos while you have something in your mouth.

Ugly blue. Look at this glorious GMK color.
I got a cherry mx brown k70 a couple days ago as my first mech. I thought it was gonna be great and feel awesome, but it's loud as fuck and my fingers get shocked after typing on it for a while. Is this a common thing? Are WASD blue o rings going to help with this at all? Honestly I'm thinking about switching back to rubber dome if this is consistent between all mech keyboards
>>52157845
Still don't have my set. :(
>>52157764

>>52157797

>>52157797
>but it's loud as fuck and my fingers get shocked after typing on it for a while
do you have sensitive ears? jesus christ blues are not even that loud. also your fingers getting shocked? do your keys even feel good? shocked as in electrical or shocked as in fatigue?
o-ring dampeners will help with the sound but will not remove it 100%
>>52158054
No, it's legit loud. My thinking is that since it has an aluminum outer casing, the keys clanging against it are causing vibrations that go straight to my finger when I bottom out and as well as additional "clang" noise. It's weird
>>52157735
Hard to say, you could get these from amazon for $35 and free shipping. No idea why Vortex caps would be $70
http://www.amazon.com/Vortex-White-Doubleshot-Keycaps-blue-infill/dp/B00XA71BQC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1451585574&sr=8-2&keywords=vortex+doubleshot+pbt
>>52158054
Yes, actually, they initially do feel pretty nice to type on. But after a while it gets annoying and my fingers get numb from the vibration of the key hitting metal
>>52158123
That's what you get for getting browns, but try not to bottom out. And get some o-rings if you have to, but don't get them from WASD unless you're a goy.
>>52158176
WASD are the only people who carry the type of o-rings I want it seems
>>52158224
No, they're not. You have ebay, amazon, and massdrop.
>>52154884
New ones aren't being produced.
>>52158123
That's pretty bizarre, I'd try and get a replacement and see how you like it. You could also try a linear switch and see if it's more to your liking. I use Gateron Browns and Cherry Clears, but have used Cherry Browns and never had any real problems, and I type throughout maybe 70% of my day.
You could try swapping your springs for something lighter, but it sounds like the tactile bump is too rough for you? The actuation force is lighter than what you'll find on most regular keyboards, though, so it's hard to say what the problem is.
You may just be bottoming out when you're typing, and if that's the case, you need to adjust your typing habits. When you're more proficient with the keyboard, you'll practically be removing your finger form the key before you complete the tactile bump, and you won't be hitting the bottom of the keyboard nor will you hear much of any sound.
>>52158662
I do bottom out, I really like doing it but it seems I'm not really supposed to?
>>52157621
This would be perfect if it had an iso layout and white leds
>>52158718
You're not "supposed to" do anything. Just type however you like.
Just ordered a Func KB-460 for £37.
This whole mech kb thing better not be a meme, /g/
>>52158790
If he's hurting himself doing it, he should stop. I didn't mean to make it sound like there's a "right" way to type, but constantly bottoming out defeats the purpose of getting tactile keys, and if it's bothering him enough to describe it as getting shocked, it doesn't sound like he's enjoying it much.
>>52158718
If you enjoy bottoming out, you could try getting MX Blues. They're still bottoming out when you type, but your fingers won't be. The issue you're dealing with is that you're slamming your fingers into a solid piece of metal with nothing to absorb the shock. Even with large o-rings, you'll still have issues with your fingers cramping quickly and fatigue.
It's a bit weird to adjust from pressing the key down fully to releasing before bottoming out, but you'll get used to it quickly I'm sure. Once you do get used to it, it feels almost akin to playing an instrument and there's a lot more flow to your type. It's definitely a weird adjustment though. It's worth trying the o-rings, but you'll probably want to start releasing the key earlier if you can.
(If you're gaming, it's normal to bottom out often, and o-rings are going to help there tremendously)
>>52159109
>but constantly bottoming out defeats the purpose of getting tactile keys
That's nonsense.
>it's bothering him enough to describe it as getting shocked, it doesn't sound like he's enjoying it much.
He should just get a heavier switch.
>>52159109
Really appreciate the input, I've been searching for an answer but I couldn't find one anywhere. So now I seem to have 2 options, keep the board for a while and try o rings with it (yes, I will be gaming a lot), or try a mx blue to see if I like that any better
>>52159151
Plan on going to bestbuy to see if they have greens, blues, or reds can test around with
>>52159382
I can't imagine you'd find a board at BB with greens.
You don't have any other electronics stores in your area? I hear there's a store called Fry's in the States that might have a better selection.

I've got a DSLR that I barely ever use. Are there any kind of resources you can recommend for getting into photography?
>>52162795
I'd avoid the thumbball. It's less accurate and can put weird strain on your wrist.
The Kensington Orbit's a solid choice to try the concept. I still have one that I use every once and a while and it's pretty comfortable.
I know that there are people who enjoy the thumbball styled mice, but personally I just can't get used to it.

Like the other anon said, korean customs are quite dank. But you're hardly going to get one within a budget of 300 bucks.
Maybe if you're lucky and there's some kind of group buy.
You could get a Topre. Those come to almost 300 bucks if you count in shipping and import tax (in most cases, depending on what you're getting and where your getting it from you may have the luck of getting a sweet deal on the last two things).

Not sure why it would be difficult to solder. There aren't any small components and you aren't doing any smd soldering. You should have no problem even if it's your first time.

>>52164474
Have you considered building your own? I just finished ordering my parts, and it's a lot less expensive than I expected. You can order a custom plate for less than 50, you can get 3 plates for around 80 (meaning two top plates and a bottom, two tops in case you made a mistake in your margins), and that's more-or-less the most expensive part, less the keycaps. The Teensy is 20 bucks, diodes are ~5 bucks, switches are 30-60 bucks, you can order custom cut acrylic for your case for next to nothing, or just use spacers between your top and bottom plates, and the rest is negligible (wires, solder, isolation rubber, rubber feet, etc.)
If you have some weird layout you've been designing, just be sure to have the keys you need first. The problem I ran into was ordering my top plate to be cut before I found the odd-sized keys that I needed. $300 should be within your margin of error for a custom made keyboard, plus it's a fun experience.
>>52164575
>Don't topre feel like rubber domes
No.
They feel like your fingers are having sex.
>What's so special about them?
Go look at some google image results of gons keyboards and you'll see all the dank shit that people have. I don't think that you'll find a whole lot of "regular old mechs" that look like that.

Mine is fucking awesome coming from laptop keyboards for the last six years. There is nothing like it, MX switches don't compare. My MX switch tester and cousin's MX Red keyboard were nice, but they feel like high end consumer electronics whereas the M feels like precision engineered industrial equipment. That's about as good as I can describe it without being a fanboy.
Also, when you type on them, people seldom come to your office asking for you because they get scared.

Consider the fact that the material something is made of will change the characteristics of said object.
Gateron switches feel different from cherry switches since they use a different housing for the switch. Various rubber dome keyboards feel different since they use different rubber of different thickness.
I don't think that you are able to judge how a switch will feel just by looking at a diagram of it.

PBT on other machines,is still just plastic, but you're comparing grapes and cherries.

Guys
er, Guy
The plastic used in the rubberdome for topre is much more resilient than your piece of shit dell in a box keyboard. Also spring
I dont even own a topre keyboard and I understand this.
>>52166119
What is at the bottom of the switch before the pcb?
A rubberdome.
>>52166169
What's it that cherry switches are made of apart from the spring? Plastic.
Just like topre switches.
>>52166186

>>52166528
GONs and Winleyless boards are "cheap" korean customs ranging from $250-550. Full milled aluminum boards like LZ and OTZ are in the $600-1200 range. There are a few more brands that fall in between these price points as well.

It seems like in every keyboard hobbyist discussion, I hear something along the lines of "Topre is god's gift to us".
But very rarely do I hear actual comparisons between Cherry MX switches. I have Cherry MX Blue switches, I love them. I tried Reds and disliked them. Browns are in the middle for me.
To those of you who have both a cherry keyboard and a topre keyboard, could you just give me some genuine opinions and thoughts on the two?
I wish I had a way of testing out a Topre but I can't without buying an entirely new keyboard.
>>52167686
>To those of you who have both a cherry keyboard and a topre keyboard
I am pretty sure there isnt a single Topre user who doesnt have a Cherry MX board. You dont start with a keyboard for $250+.
>>52167739
I suppose that's true. I just find it odd how I can't find any legitimately good comparisons of Topre to a popular Cherry switch online.
>>52162765
Do you actually own this thing? What's the learning curve on it like?
>>52167762
They are very different.
>>52167762
Because they arent comparable. Its like comparing a car to a motorcycle. Both get you from A to B but they also feel vastly different. Topres are hybrid switches that have everything from being tactile, to being soft and responsive. Its particularly hard to compare them to Cherry because Cherry switches all do something different. Topres basically have as little resistance as reds, but arent linear. They are tactile, yet not even remotely as tactile as blues and so on.
The switch has a shit ton of things that can be found in Cherry switches, but none actually reflect what Topres are. So the conclusion would basically be that a Topre feels like a combination of all Cherry switches. Now thats a conclusion that wont help anyone, thats why no one states it.

How well does the macro programming work on Ducky Shine 5? I have to type a lot of repetitive shit at my work but my IT department won't let me install any software so macro playback has to be hardware based. I have a corsair M95 mouse and it's fucking incredible for running shit in excel (I programmed it at home). I used to have K95 but macros won't work without Corsair's shitware running in the background. I also learned that Asus Strix keyboard has on board macro storage but no one ever talks about that board. What are my other options? I gotta have a numpad.
>>52163634
First try, feels good
The big ships that shoot out waves of single letters are fucking irritating to deal with though
Where can I buy a high end (don't care for cost) keyboard with Cherry MX Green or Blue switches?
Customs are okay.
So I got my first mechanical keyboard the other day from monoprice ( http://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=114&cp_id=11401&cs_id=1140102&p_id=13785&seq=1&format=2 )
So I have no real experience with any other keyboards but I have used a wide range of garbo ones. Typing on this is a dream compared to the keyboard I had before. Strangely enough gaming felt slightly more accurate on the membrane keyboard for FPS to me but maybe I am just not yet used to the nature of the switches since I have been using membrane for pretty much most of life. Also the enter key is weird to me so I gotta get used to that but so far, I am loving my first entry in the MK world

I played an older version of this, this one seems to run a lot smoother
as always it gets pretty tricky near the end
it's usually the individual letters everywhere that get me. I end up using my raw speed to type every word I see rather than looking at what's going to hit me next, and that starts to matter more when the letters are spraying everywhere past level 10

lol
>tfw I keep losing in ztype because it thought I was trying to type a different word and by the time I realize it wants me to finish that word I didn't start on purpose I'm already surrounded
would be nice if you could change targets like typing of the dead and also if they'd show all on screen words in a list on the side so you aren't fucked when they start to cover each other
>>52163634
