they really want to push convergence.
The terminal and file manager are the one in the ubuntu touch.
if you want to know what they are going to do in 2016 :

keep developing ubuntu touch
bring unity 8 and mir to destkop & mobile
launch a new smartphone with good specs that is able to manage the convergence system
start selling their phones on retailers

future looks great for linux
>>

>Stop going off-topic.
but anon, that's because of that they started mir and unity 8, to make a smartphone OS that is shit like android.
There's nothing off topic, since it's actually a good work. Sad that they don't use wayland, but they are doing great stuff
>>
>>52125673
It literally only runs "Ubuntu apps" from their shitty phone OS
This is beyond worthless, especially since everyone else is targeting Wayland
>>
>>52129443

Nah, I use linux myself so a terminal isn't something that "oooh"'s me. What I mean is the combination of flashy shit and terminals. You always see this in films etc, because people know that "hacking" takes place using text, somehow, but they also think that advanced means flashy.

yes, but they drop it for mir, so they'll have to port everything. They are fucking dumb. Instead of wasting time with mir they should have used wayland, and contribute to this shit. All they did is force wayland devs to move their ass (or not, but that's what I heard)

X is shit, everybody knows that and we have to move to something else. When they started Mir, wayland wasn't usable, so they created mir.
We have to something else. Everybody's moving to wayland and ubuntu is moving to mir.
>>
>>52130940
>>52130921
no but seriously what did you want ? that they kept X ?
I just don't like the idea of using Mir instead of wayland, but letting X die after all those years is a good thing. I can find you a talk by X devs saying why it should die if you want, and why they started wayland
>>
>>52130996

Literally every other distro, including the official Ubuntu spinoffs ({K,X}ubuntu for example) will be using wayland. No one should be supporting Mir.

What a stupid fucking question.

It was recorded with a separate camera because a program recording the desktop wouldn't show the performance of the desktop raw. It would be veiled behind whatever recorded it. If the recording software had a glitch that the desktop normally doesn't show, then it would effect the final outcome.

Educate yourself.

Is Mir an actual display server or is it that protocol nonsense like Wayland?

Wayland pisses me off because writing a wayland window manager or desktop environment entails also writing a compositor, which is total bullshit. The compositor should be a daemon that gets hooked into.

Mir is basically X 2.0 with canonical backing it. It's a display server and a protocol and some libraries. It's also GPLv3 so software using permissive licenses cannot use it.

Wayland is a protocol but it has standardize libraries for making the compositor/display server. I don't see why you would have a problem with it.
>>
>>52141898
>standardize
it has standardized* libraries for the compositor/display server
>>
>>52141898
I'm not typically the type to ask for spoonfeeding, but would you mind pointing me in the right direction? I've tried several times to find a sane starting point for writing a Wayland WM but everything out there is about as clear as mud. It's all endless explanations of how Wayland is just a protocol.

It'd greatly benefit from some kind of developer-friendly "getting started" document or something of the sort.
>>
>>52142137
I think this is what has been released

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/wayland

wayland/libinput is for input handling
wayland/weston is the reference compositor you can use it to figure out what is going on and build on it if you want

I wish they would name these something more descriptive
wayland/wayland for the compositor code(I think?)
and
wayland/wayland-protocol appears to be for client applications
>>
>>52142411
There was also an effort to make weston compartmentalized so you could borrow components directly from it and not have to make an entire compositor from scratch. I don't know if they're still working on it though it was called "libweston" I believe

I'm not sure. Moot always said they worked for free but I figured that was just a courtesy so he didn't need to make their wages public. After all, no one would work for free, that's a ridiculous idea.

Because that way it'll get used by all Wayland WMs and DEs, meaning that it'll be a big focus of developer attention and get its kinks smoothed out.

With a bring-your-own-compositor design you end up with 50 different compositors, none of which are particularly good.

Yes. And there's also wlc, but I find weston source easier to read. I didn't grasp either yet but I'd go with libweston. Basically, from what I understand, you write Weston plugin, which manages surfaces (windows), and the desktop client, which adds stuff like panel, background, ... It's explained in weston's README.

What the fuck is supposed to be impressive here?

What can this do that a GUI installation of Debian 8 can't do equally well?

(To be honest, I had an incredibly critical bug in a very simple Debian 8 installation, and it was Evolution being shit. It would literally fill up the whole hard drive with syslog spam. But that's unrelated to the GUI.)

I'm getting major Windows 8 flashbacks, it's a half desktop half tablet UI and it's good at neither.
>>
>>52157448
Why can't anyone figure out how to make it work?
>>
>>52158073
Because it's not one size fits all, desktop ui doesn’t work on tablet or vice versa and mixing the two just makes it shit for both. I dislike apple but I can't deny that at least they know this obvious fact and have separate environments for osx and ios.

An example of why anime posting outside weeb boards should be a ban reason

It should be the posting of attractive female persons for the sole reason of getting attention that should be banned.

The fact that it's an anime girl is only mildly relevant in this case.

The problem is, people complain about it.

That's what happened to the desktop threads. Autists started 'sperging out about anime, so anime-loving autists started posting more of it.

It's basically beta retaliation. If you play vidya games and some autistic kid is making noises, and you tell him to stop, chances are he'll do it more.

If anime was just ignored, people wouldn't post it so much.
>>
>>52136088
>>52148031
As expected of babby's first idol.
>>
>>52160976

Anime desktops at least match the context of a desktop thread. The real problem in my opinion is people spamming anime in other threads and sometimes even hijacking the thread into a waifu discussion thread. Anyway, complaining won't probably change anything.
