you make a fairly usable desktop that's simple to understand and operate if you read the docs, and then pretend that it took a great amount of effort and leet computer skills and feel like a badass as people confuse you for a pro
prerequisites for the facade:
programs claim to be lightweight, do not actually have to be truly lightweight, just lighter than gnome
programs should be written in a "cool" language like C to drive the point home - you ARE a hacker who uses HACKER software
some compiling should be required because ./configure --prefix=/usr/local && make install is a lost art that makes people's jaws drop in wonder
hide any UI elements that might make people notice that your hackery looking desktop is functional, don't worry, you'll keep the functionality
seriously make sure it looks retro and unusable to people that don't know what software it is
bitmap fonts are recommended
all you have to lose is time, but you have the admiration of ignorant people to gain!

Top right text (whatever it is) is formatted ugly. You should fix that.
The uneven size ratio from bottom and top in the upper middle tile (are they even tiled?) is awkward and, of course, uneven.
Rounded corners are lame, but that's just my opinion. You have too much black in your browser. Like, thick, strong black. Tone it down a bit. You can make it a bit lighter and still maintain the desired goal for the thick-darkness without resorting to pure black. Also, fix the captcha's contrasting color. Quickreply should fit the theme of the rest of the webpage.
I do like the colourscheme, but the issues I noted are still issues.
Updated the startpage some, tried to make the tiles slide and shit but that gave me font issues, so that idea died. Haven't done much else to the desktop yet, not sure what I should do next. I guess I need to get a good font.

Is that background for the startpage actually transparent with a blur effect, or is it just copied (to match) with a photoshopped blur effect? Both work, I guess, but I'd prefer modular over temporary static solutions. Either way. you've got some soft, enjoyable colours, your layout is good, wallpaper is tasteful (maybe a little bit too busy, and the contrast makes the aesthetic slighlty concentrated [if that's even an issue], rough edges etcetera)
The borders are a bit thuick, and strangely coloured, but that's personal preference, I guess. Much as anything is personal preference, but whatever.
And, I can't tell, but do you have bolds enabled in your terminal?

It's somewhere inbetween, it's the same background with a blur (css blur though), but it's dynamic via jquery. Although I set it to update slowly, because I usually don't swing my browser around.
And yeah, I need to work on the colors. I'd like to get them to match more with the background, since it has some pretty sweet colors going.

However generic pastel colours may be, they're still soft and pleasant on the eyes. The resolution confuses me, but I'm not going to criticize someone for their monitor size. Floating is a choice, of course. Good fonts.
Your FF .css should include some slight grey (light grey, of course!) coloration to the url bar to indicate difference, but it's fine. Your startpage is decent, simple, but the size of the words on the bottom tiles are a little bit too large-- touch near the sides of the squares too much. Cute anime girls, too, bumping it up to 11/10, obviously.

yeah it's functional as all hell. also love the integration with OS X's notification system + js script extensibility + client functionality. honestly the best irc client I've ever used. scraped through the old versions to get the (superior) user channel rank graphics and the classic bliss motif. reminds me of the ultra functional emacs leuven.el theme that I've been using. never been more productive/happy with my setup. I think the only thing I have left to add to my retro tile collection are the solaris/cde ones, but I should have all others. think I have all good classic icons as well.
