its because its adding alot more depth with more factors into the engagement, and the technological subtitles are much greater.
things like manoeuvring specifically to avoid detection vs managing your energy, cat and mouse games of detection, and deciding whether to emit or not all very interesting conundrums. The information and electronic war has alot more to it and alot more on the pilots hands to think about than before.
I think we are at the height of human interaction with the aerial battlefield, not like the pilot was directly managing much about how his jet is operating in a mig-17, but on a modern fighter he has all kinds of doo-dads and gizmos to control and influence.
shame its all going to be automated and robotic soon, starting with strike aircraft. all downhill from here
