So a notebook came to me and the owner wanted it to be fixed since its having alot of BSODs so dig in to his notebook which is very suspicious and i found out that its a heavily moded notebook by chinks. Even the stickers and labels are made to look like its a legit to match its moded specs

Now the problem is im trying to reformat it but it seems that the HDD's are locked or unable to be detected because they changed alot ot make it look like a 1 Tera with a core i7 and an 8GB ram which is bullshit.

The HDD's are locked?

Care to go into more detail on that?
>>

I dont know how its locked but whenver i get into the win7 set up, it wont detect the drive it only showed a 9gb hard drive.

A few things you can try:
Try and change the BIOS setting from RAID to ATA && check the hdd settings in the BIOS
If you have a desktop connect the hdd and format it through disk management on windoze and format it, sounds like it's dynamically set

This is genuinely interesting; I've never seen a completely bootleg laptop like that before. Offer the owner some cash for it and mail the thing to a tech site for a teardown and writeup

Is it actually a legit HP notebook or is some ridiculous knockoff?

That thing should boot off of a usb. Can you load up ubuntu or something on a flash drive and format the hdd that way?
>>

Its a legit HP but replaced the RAM to 500gb then moded the shit out an XP to make it "future proof"
>>

>>
I will be suprised if it hasnt got any keylogger or something of this kind
>>
>>52008932
>>52008970

I have a hard time believing that that computer has a 500gb hdd in it. It takes 1.8" PATA drives.

Maybe it could only detect 9 GB because that's all the drive is. I'd tear that shit open and double check. It should only be one panel on the bottom.
>>
>>52008977
i tried installing any anti virus in it and it and it just crash or freeze. I did try to install a speccy first to detect its specs but cant detect it.

>>52008982
im afraid that might be true
>>
>>52008982
I doubt it's really 9GB, from a quick glance at the desktop and such there should be more than 10GB installed.
>>

inject it with ubatoo on a pendrive and scan from ubantoo

im really impressed that they had to fake the sticker to make it so much legit. Tech illiterate dont even bother looking at the System Info, they just look into the stickers and assume that its fine so yeah. Im pretty sure this made a good deal the first person who bought this.

Yeah I was thinking that. Especially since mine is a bit newer on the tech side. There should be an option somewhere to display the drive name though. Google that and it should reveal the proper size. That or pic related but I wouldn't be surprised if that's modded too.

I'm thinking to get some old speakers, clean them, apply some paint and sell them on ebay saying they're are vintage hi-fi equipment of highly specialized but short lived audio houses.
Could work that? I bet that will work...
>>
>>52009256
it takes a lot of work trying to restore something to make it look like a vintage.
>>
>>52009241
Would cloning the drive and loading it in a virtual machine have the same effect as having it on the modded system?
>>
>>52009296
No idea..
>>
>>52009291
I don't think in paint them to look vintage, only to diffentiate them a bit.
The vintage look wil be done by the speakers itself. Painting a bit will be a bait...

Well shit.......how am i supposed to hook this thing up to my desktop. I dont even have any adapter for this shit

Its a 30gb 1.8" HDD
>>
>>52009296
Because of the low level hardware drivers windows uses, it is very difficult to boot a system that was installed on bare metal in a vm. It's possible, it just takes a lot of work. I tried this, unsuccessfully, with a work computer that was running a super locked down xp. I cloned the drive and wiped it and installed windows 7. I kept getting different BSODs even on the same hardware. I did not try (only because at the time I did not have access to unmodified xp media) doing an inplace install in the vm or doing a new install and then copying some files over. The image was updated to 7 before I could get xp to work anyway so I just gave up.

>>52009473
Ahh I knew it!

If you have an old ipod, you can use that as a usb adapter. Sort of.

At this point, I'd boot ubuntu on it and make a new partition table and reformat with either xp (if you really want to) or 7 if you bump up the ram to 2 gigs
>>
>>52009473
Most likely it is a snap on adapter, try to pull it out, it should reveal a normal SATA socket under that. HP often puts their own proprietary adapter on HDDs but they can be removed.
>pic related, excuse the watermark, i got it from google images
>>
>>52009528
I dont have any old iPod but id have to do a workaround for an unbuntu bootable flash just to get that pertition. I dont have any RAM for this stuff, im not even payed to fix this but im interested of doing some workaround for this thing might be handy in the future.
>>
>>52009556

Nope, that's a 1.8" ZIF PATA drive. That's the connector you see. I have one in the middle on my picture. The one on the left if slightly bigger and is a 1.8" SATA drive. And even that has a different connector.

>>52009594
Yeah the only thing I can think of would be to boot ubuntu or something and zero the partition table. Then let XP do the formatting (NTFS this time) and reinstall.

The real problem is. This is a heavily modded windows XP. The hardware is mostly fine. Just replace the HDD and the OS and it should be fine.

i think the modded XP is what is fucking your shit up. It has so many vulnerabilities these chinks are taking advantage of so almost everything looks legit to a tech illiterate person.

>>
>>52010183
I did not know the registry keys, nor did I know that that was a thing you could do.

Also, to be fair, the image I was using was pretty locked down and there was no good way to get to the registry (not that it would have stopped me, I just wouldn't have considered it)
