Anyone else 1337 enough to handle running BSD? No hippy bullshit and ubuntu mate gui's in BSD land. This is for true unix soldiers and CLI cowboys.

So /g/ when did you actually outgrow the linux meme and decide to get serious about computers and install BSD on your thinkpad?

Tried to get freeBSD desktop running (in a vm, no thinkpab for me yet) and found it to be very difficult to work with as far as getting a WM/DE working went. was a while ago but it was either compiler errors or some dependency problem.

Ports are nice tho, i like tha.t

I've read that apmd is pretty good on laptop, but has anyone used the suspend/resume features?

Sure. Don't mind resolution it only has vesa driver working.
Things like suspend and hibernate don't work and no fan/power control but who needs it on laptop.

i used i3 in openbsd for a week to see if i could live... I missed having things to complain about.

it's great for anything but gaming. maybe its possible but seriously why bother

You sound so mature.
I have heard a lot of nice things about zfs but I don't have enough ram on my server to make the switch.
And linux is barely supported on the desktop, why should I regress to BSD?

It's easy and well documented. Installer is very simple and there is package manager. It's much easier than installing arch or gentoo for example.
>>
>>51959500
I found pcbsd mostly terrible. Ghost gets you up to a gui with a regular freebsd install underneath.
>>
>>51959513
Want to rip your dick off? Install arch on a laptop and get a decent wifi manager.
>>
>>51959400

There are binary packages. I see no reasons to compile everything from ports.

I'm not OP. I'm just saying it's not hard to install and configure.
Problem is worse hardware support. And you would end up running linux binaries most likely for some commercial software you may want. And then sound wouldn't work there because no pulseaudio. Etc.
>>
>>51959539
cause using elinks or links is flii double ii
>>
>>51959560
Yeah, I agree the install isn't bad. But the lack of support for hardware is a huge barrier to entry

I want to start playing around with openbsd. Seems like a cool community. I like thinking about things from a security perspective.
>>
>>51959495
If I wanted zfs I would install solaris instead. Or nexenta.

btw most BSD fans I've met run it on servers and had windows on their desktops and connected to their BSD via putty.

pc-bsd with gnome classic is pretty damn good. Only problem is flash video freezes and a random combo of alt-ctrl-esc, clr-esc, alt-esc, ctrl-alt-esc frees it. Found the cure by pure intuition. Also the system does not seem to like being forced to shut down. UPS seems like a good idea for it. -Mike

>>51959154
Also PS4, your mac and most likely your router.
That doesn't make it suitable for desktop usage, though.
>>
>>51959661
A lot of BSD users also use OS X on their desktops. BSD users tend to be sane and don't try to hinder their desktop experience by installing Linux/BSD on there.
>>
Why not just run gentoo, doe? It has the best parts of *BSD (portage) and the best parts of GNU plus LINUX (everything else).
>>
>>51960468
>the best parts of GNU plus LINUX (everything else).

Linux kernel is a mess, it can't even port POSIX commands correctly and leaves them completely broken for decades.
GNU code is all crap too, compare GNU code to UNIX/BSD counter parts for the same tools.

Given Intel and AMD GPU support is ported from Linux, it has to be worse. FreeBSD hasn't even caught up to Kernel 3.8, let alone 4.4. Then you have all sorts of shit like HAL straight out of the 2.6 days.

>Linux kernel is a mess
Yes. It is garbage.

Why bother?

Tried it for a while and it was horrible. No hardware support except the basic stuff, nasty bugs popping up everywhere and slow as fuck. Had to stay with Windows 7 (although I'd really like to move to something else).

This is why i want to explore the BSD world, the more i use and learn about linux, the more i see how much of a mess it is. The BSD community seems more chill too, less random enthusiasts worried about desktop themes and playing games, more actual coders and sysadmins working on actual code innovations.

BSDfriends, it is time to stop this childish bullshit. Your OS is as awesome as ours and we should be working together to destroy the Windows and OSX bullshit.

Anyone engaged in the childish "GHANUU SUCKS NO BEESUCKSDEE SUCKS" is an idiot and should just install Windows and go hang out on Failbook.
