I live in a college town and kids often think I have rich parents, but I don't. I drive a Tesla Model S, if I feel like driving. Other times, I ride a fixed gear bike.

How did you get started with crypto? Do you understand the mathematical models and programmed the algorithms from scratch? Or do you look up implementations and try to break/improve them? Any specific suggestion to a book that can get one started to get into crypto?

I'm learning the math behind it. A lot of it is just intense algebra. You don't need to understand all of it if you aren't implementing these things from scratch (and you shouldn't).
Get the book Cryptography Engineering by Niels Ferguson and Bruce Schnier.
I learned by learning the models and how they work. Never implement your own model. Always use preexisting libraries like OpenSSL, cryptography.io, Crypto++, etc.
It's okay to program your own version of the algorithm, just don't use it for anything serious.
Also, learn all you can about hashes, one time pads, etc. It's not just about encryption. All of the things are important to Crypto.
Another, and final, point: Always ask the experts. If you aren't sure of something, go into ##crypto on freenode or something and ask your question. Those people always know something and you can learn it.
