Why is the Apple Magic Keyboard the only keyboard with this layout?
>>
>>51923881

Because it's a rubbish layout

Having Fn on the left is cancer.
Having uneven arrow keys is cancer.
Having to press Fn to access the arrow keys is cancer.
Having Fn where control is supposed to be on a shit tier board is cancer.
Not having control on the home row is cancer.

I think that just about nails it.
>>
>>51923814
There's no keyboard worth $200. You could get a poker, decent caps, and a case for about $200, maybe even enough left over for a sleeved cable

>How many other Topre boards did you try and how does it compare (typing experience)

Currently own:

Leopold FC660C (currently using this as the RK draws too much power for the Pi that I'm typing this on)
Realforce 23UB
HHKB Pro 2

Have owned:

Realforce 87UB (variable, sold 3 weeks ago)

Obviously not counting the buckling spring and Cherry boards I have had/borrowed.

Also, the one I have is the 55g model, as that's supposed to be closer to the real thing.

I've only used it for about 3 hours so far, but I'd say about 80% of the feel is there. There's definitely a reduction in key travel, thanks to the dental banding, but it does make it near silent. I don't like it, and will probably take it out when there is another GB on the foam dampening rings.

As for the tactility, just sitting here and mucking around with the FC660C and the RK I've realised that the tactility is actually pretty damn close, but there's a catch. If the keys are hit off-center, the tactile bump is less pronounced. In practice I think this leads the RK to feel softer than it actually is, but during my typing today at no point did I feel that there was inconsistencies in the weighting.

The reason for the above is, from what I've read, the spring being used for the resistance rather than the cup rubber.

>Also are topre caps compatible ie can you change caps with some made for real topre

Just checked, and yes and no. They fit, but the clips on the keycaps do not have enough purchase on the inside of the slider to stay put, so they rotate freely if you manipulate them.

On the subject of keycaps, I was able to pull the stock keycaps off with my fingers, which I haven't been able to do on any other boards. The KBC DS PBT keycaps I've replaced them with stay put though.

>Can you turn the piece of shit LEDs completely off

I'm not sure if I'm honest. I didn't try to when I received it and gave it it's first run, and the only solid review out there doesn't list a hotkey to do so.
>>
>>51925830
I can almost forgive those who just rice their esc since it's not like you are always using it and its in top left meanig its not in your way when typing

But people who plaster all their f row with thick gummy skulls and shit should be lined up to a wall and shot.

One or two artisans(ESC or WIN) matching theme is fine.

But the plastering of $400 keys is retarded. Especially when there is no theme or reason for theme.
>>
>>51925824
if you're into gaming, avoid blues. you have to bring the key nearly to the top of the key stroke to reset those, which makes double tapping less than ideal. Brown switches will give you a tactile sensation and yet the reset is nearly right on top of the actuation, which means you don't have to bring the key all the way up to reset.

yeah I don't think the kludge is for me.

I'm the guy testing the novatouch and I'm wondering if I should return it to buy a realforce or a leopold fc660c, or keep it and rice it with a good pbt set.

I'm not considering the hhkb because as good as it may look, I'm coming from a poker2 and I'm kinda tired of fn+everything
>>
Realforce was definitely worth the purchase for me.

Easily, hands down, the best keyboard I've ever used.
>>
>>51926306

I don't really think there's enough of a difference between the Realforce and a Novatouch to bother. Can tell you now you'll get sick of the FC660C as it's F-key everything.

Unless you really want a cheap Topre board with backlighting yeah I'd avoid the Kludge
>>
>>51926367
oh btw I paid 105€ for my novatouch, so it's not like "30$ less than a realforce or a leopold", more like 120$.

So yeah I'm conflicted. The leopold is more portable for sure... does it feel better than the NT? 100$ better?
guess I'll use this NT a couple days more
>>
>>51925359
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mju3AmdoVhs
>>
>>51926392

If you're looking for portability the HHKB will be the way to go. It's much lighter due to the lack of a metal plate and the only thing you gain with the FC660C is arrow keys and dedicated insert and delete.

I'd keep the Nova and put thick double shot PBT keys on it, and get some foam silencing pads in the next GB.
>>
Fuck guys. I want a full size for under 100 that doesn't fall apart. Why is this so hard to find? Rk-9000? Lot of people saying it doesn't last. You guys care so much, I don't want to fuck up. What do I buy? Prefer mx red I think, but haven't tried any before
>>
>>51926673
>the only thing you gain with the FC660C is arrow keys and dedicated insert and delete.

well fn+keys doubles up as home end pgup pgdown i think that is neater than going to look for them in the letter caps.

Also coming from blues I don't find the novatouch noise too be too much tobehonest

the thing with leopold is that the board+caps color combination don't really appeal me too much

>>

you asked for sub 100, i think that is out of budget.

brown is not very loved because people say it feels like a grain of sand is stuck in the switch.

Does anyone know the name of those oldschool IBM Keycaps. They're polished black but also make use of some oranges for some of the command keys. The edges aren't sharp but more of a slight roundness.

Been trying for ages to find some, what I did find were limited run prints that i've since forgotten the name of.
>>
>>51927175
If you want to feel a bump when you depress the key, choose browns or the slightly stiffer clears.

If you don't want to feel a bump when you depress the key, choose reds or the slightly stiffer blacks.

Some people say that the reds don't provided enough resistance and the prefer blacks. This anon is correct about blues switches >>51925942

They aren't for gaming and are more for professional writing/journalism.

DSA caps are pretty thin too. Signature Plastics can't make double shot PBT so I usually stay away from them unless it's either blanks or dye-sub legends.

They do offer the retro styled SA profile which is thicker and kind of makes up for the cheaper ABS plastic. ...but I don't like the look of them.

This very much. Those who say blues are not for gaming are redditors who don't know what they're talking about, much like people who recommend browns as babby's first mechanical keyboard.

The difference in actuation and reset points isn't even 1mm. It's barely noticeable unless you're some professional double tapping gaymur.

Comfiest switch = Topre
Smoothest switch = Reds
Finger cramp tier switch = Blacks + anything harder
Best tactile switch = Ergo Clear/Clear
Best tactile + sound switch = blues
Best when you want to sound like you're the hardest working motherfucker in the building but really you're just shitposting on 4chan and loving it switch = Buckling spring
>>

I'd argue topre for best sound too.

nigga i tried reds ,blues and black side to side, they feel the same except for the sound they make.

yes pbt tend to have better texture, less smooth.

those might not be, but mighthats what they usually are like

well both abs and pbt can be either smooth or rough, depending on the set.

but since abs are cheaper they are more often smooth than not, and the opposite for pbt.

>>
>>51928271
>>51927807
Just because your gigantic ham fingers decimate everything in their path doesn't mean there's no legitimate differences between actuation forces. There's a noticeable change in resistance with a 35g, 45g, and 55g switch side by side.
>>
What the fuck is electrostatic capacitive?
>>
>>51927807
>>51928271

Confirmed for not having used them for any extended period of time. Your fingers get tired.

>>51928222
>>51928278

Bit more complicated than that.

The rubber dome is there for the tactile feedback, the whole switch mechanism is in the spring.

Additionally the rubber is a lot thicker, stiffer, and thicker composition to regular dome mats

Can disagree all you like but the fact is conical spring = mechanical

>>51928168

I'm biased as all the boards I currently own are Topre but yes, IMO they're worth it

They're sort of like MX clears but much smoother and quieter, with much more satisfying audible feedback

You get what you pay for with the Topre boards, but it may not be for everybody....
>>
>>51928168
>Noice, is topre worth it really? To me it kinda seems like a glorified rubber dome.

Coming from mx cherry, first 10 seconds feel like a rubberdome.
Then, if you try a rubberdome you realize topre is what rubberdome should be, but isn't.

And mx cherry feels like a plastic toy from that moment on.

The spring in a Topre switch is measured for its' resistance.

Depressing the spring causes its' resistance to change, and therefore it will actuate based on the springs resistance, rather than an "on" or "off" position.

All Topre boards have been designed so the actuation point is exactly as the cup rubber collapses, but it doesn't need to be - as can be seen with the Royal Kludge I received today, you can actually change the resistance/actuation point, as in at what resistance point the key will trigger, to your liking

>>51928366

Never tried them personally save for on spacebars for blue boards. I'd imagine they're way too heavy; the only heavy switch I've tolerated was buckling springs, they felt far more satisfying than MX but unless you live and work by yourself they're annoying as fuck to all around you, so your M/Unicomp will gather dust.
>>
>>51928421
>but unless you live and work by yourself they're annoying as fuck to all around you, so your M/Unicomp will gather dust.

Significantly more annoying than greens/blues?
>>
>>51928430
You can mitigate the annoyance of blues and greens with o-rings. You don't have that possibility with M's.
>>
>>51928430

Yes. It's closest counterpart in terms of noise would be a typewriter or an old POS machine.

I used a M (borrowed from a friend who found it on council clean up - why can't I find nice things) for three weeks and it drove my co-workers nuts. It would probably by my favorite switch outside of Topre, but for practicality sake I'd say Clears are probably second best.

>>

when you try it you think "this is what a keyboard should feel like, why aren't all keyboard made like this"?

honestly it's what you imagine a keyboard to feel like, except you usually sit at one and it's mushy piece of shit with shit keys and membranes.

also the sound. it's like cloppity clop of a horse on soft dirt, compared to the click clack of cherry mx (tactiles/clicky)

and the keys seem to "accompany" your fingers, sucking them when going down and pushing them up when going up.

If I were in the market for a board that was well built and provided a great *typing* experience and had little frills, definitely. I would also suggest a HHKB and FC660R depending on what you want - discussion on that earlier in thread.

If you are looking for a gaymen board with multiple macros, backlighting, programmable etc I would look at a Royal Kludge (Topre clone, see my first impressions earlier in the thread) or a Cherry board.
>>
>>51928808

I thought they were, but started having my doubts when I was trying to fit Topre caps to my royal kludge earlier. I stand corrected
>>
>>51928842
I can deal with no numpad but no f keys or arrow keys is too much and silly.

I have 4 keyboards, blacks, greens, blues and browns, all full sized, I enjoy all but prefer greens the most I think.

Unfortunately you can't get a feel for each switch without typing on a full board of them, for a few days, and then chopping and changing. I took to Topre straight away as I was using clears beforehand, but buckling spring and blues definitely took me a few days to love

When you bottom out on Topre there's rubber, a spring and PCB all mounted on a plate to soften the bottom out.

On the MX switches you're bottoming out at the bottom of the plastic switch so it's harsh in comparison

Probably buying this and going back to the JIS layout soon. Long story short, I switched from a Filco JIS layout to a HHKB and while I like the HHKB I just miss the JIS layout too much. Also, the HHKB spacebar is abnormally loud in contrast to the rest of the keyboard, but the rest of the keyboard itself sounds great though. I then realized that the JP layout has a PBT spacebar due to its size.

Has anyone else gone from Pro 2 to Type-S here? I wonder what's in store for me.
