Brazil is now blocking whatsapp
>A judge in Sao Paulo has ordered WhatsApp to shut down for 48 hours, starting at 9pm Eastern tonight.
>WhatsApp is the single most used app in Brazil, with about 93 million users, or 93% of the country’s internet population. It’s a particularly useful service for Brazil’s youth and poor, many who cannot afford to pay the most expensive plans on the planet.
>Brazilian telco’s have been lobbying for months to convince the government that WhatsApp’s voice service is unregulated and illegal (not entirely unlike the taxi industry’s posture on Uber), and have publicly blamed the “WhatsApp effect” for driving millions of Brazilians to abandon their cell phone lines.

That article is pure shit
Judge ordered WhatsApp to be blocked at the very end of the day so her decision wouldn't get overruled by a superior court. Companies complied because they actually like this decision but this has absolutely nothing to do with them.
The reason the judge did that is because WhatsApp refused to comply with a criminal investigation.
So who fucked up here, the judge who sneaked this at the end of the day and acted way beyond her authority. WhatsApp for not complying with a court order on a criminal investigation and superior courts for doing fuck all so far.

meanwhile Telegram already got nearly 2 million new users after just 2 hours of whatsapp being blocked
mind you it's 3am on a weekday so that number is going to up by a ton unless the decision is overruled tomorrow morning
Is Brazil so ass-backwards that they don't realise messaging apps have existed for decades?
>>51907196
The blocking whatsapp has nothing to do with telecom companies. That article is pure fud.
They refused to comply to a court ruling.
If those monkeys have any brain cells they'd be using an encrypted messenger like Signal
>>51907280
theoretically WhatsApp uses the same encryption that Signal uses
