I am an undying lover of Classic windows theme, but I'll keep this one for some time all the same. It doesn't fuck up with programs using their own theming layer, which is kinda sorta important when three quarters of the windows software worth shit do that.

NeXT literally couldn't enter the home market for legal reasons with Apple. NeXT was advanced, but it outright couldn't gain any mass penetration unless people started buying $10000 machines routinely.
NeXTStep was impressive, it was a solid UNIX system but with a nice UI and was comparatively nice to program for than its contemporaries. If you like coding for OSX, NeXTStep is why.
MS's competitor ended up being Apple, and if you've used oldschool Mac OS, it wasn't actually more advanced than Windows at all.
Like, at all (fuck, Mac OS still used cooperative multitasking up until OSX replaced it, resource forks were a bad idea that made transferring files extremely dicey (especially once the internet got popular), the Mac OS extension system is a bit of a mess, maybe slightly more stable than Windows but just as likely for everything to go down after a program crashed due to a bug, etc).
