Go for what you want. I chose thinkpads because they run a tad cooler, and a better keyboard. Slightly better battery life with a good battery, and run linux well.

It did run linux. I'm not so poor that my budget for something I use to get work done is $50 though - I bought it a long time ago because it was the best and I bought the x220 for similar reasons. These days my budget is "can afford to replace it if it gets lost/stolen/destroyed" and the x220, at around £200, hits that nicely.
Even the x220 with 4GB RAM slows down when running android studio or eclipse or even sometimes a shitload of chrome tabs will cause issues.
There are always workarounds like editing in emacs and so on but why should I limit myself?
That's why I consider it pretty much a facebook machine - it's sufficient for regular internet browsing but modern applications don't run smoothly on them.
