It only is if you intend it to.
Just because it cost millions doesn't mean it looks like a oil country-kings pavé Rolex.
I don't think serious collectors flaunt their unique pieces at Antiquorum. Though I originally intended very expensive price when new.

I think the glossy stock croco print strap makes this a very versatile watch, which can be worn in both casual or semi-formal situations. I wore mine to an office Christmas party and it drew a lot of compliments. The NATO, I feel, sort of turns it into more of a straight field watch and less of an "Explorers' Club" watch. Which would be fine, depending on how you normally wear it.
>>
>>51881818

Their chronographs on the site at least all seem to use the basic 7750, not a modded auto movement with a chronograph module.
>>
>>51881831
Maybe 20 years after seiko stops production of the movement will it get increasingly difficult to service. That's true of basically any brand though.
>>
>>51881789

>>
Guys, I'm going to buy my first mechanical watch and the Orient models look very appealing . The problem is that they are not widely available here in Germany, so I don't have access to the most common models from the poorfag guide.

Could someone here take a look at this shop and recommend me a good deal (under 200 Euros). That would help me greatly.

back when my SNZG13 was my daily driver i wore it on a leather nato. I really liked how it looked.

Thinking about switching my Maratac SR-1 over to a leather nato soon. Its on the nylon nato it came with. I like the look but I feel like the brown of the leather would match with more outfits than the black nylon
>>
>>51881886
Not sure about the US, but my local Seiko AD in Canada said that they service 6R15s in-house. They are, however, incapable of servicing any of the Grand Seiko movements (which get shipped back to Japan and have a turnaround time of about 1-2 months), or anything older than 15-20 years (unless you source the parts yourself). Even if your Seiko AD doesn't want to take it on, you can always find a watchmaker who will. I know of 3 good independent guys who own and service watches with the 6R15.

I would say you're fine with a SARB for at least the next 10-20 years. Even after that, I'm sure you can find someone to work on them, as I have for my 6106 and 44A movements.
>>
what would you guys go for if you wanted a minimalistic and slim watch?

Really depends what style you want. Pretty much all Orient watches are good.
Diver: Ray, Mako
Flieger/Pilot: Flight
Gayboy: Disk
Dressy: Sun&Moon, Duke, Bambino, Symphony, Union
And all of those have variations as well.

They've unified all of their low-midrange movements into one family of 7S/4R/6R with a huge amount of parts overlap, so I'm guessing that family is around to stay for a long time now.

Left is a 7S26 mainplate, right is a 6R15.

/wt/ I think I have a problem
My Amphibia doesn't work as it's supposed to
Its rotor doesn't move anymore, I don't feel or hear it when I'm shaking it. So it doesn't wind the watch up, but it still works when I wind it up manually. Three questions:
What causes things like this?
Do I need some special tools to open it, or how do I do it without damaging it?
Can I fix this myself?
>>
>>51882449

You can use a pair of strong scissors to twist the screw ring to remove it, then the caseback lifts out.
>>
>>51882431
Ah, I didn't realize you had it back already. How does the mesh feel? Does it catch hairs or anything? I mean, not like you have any, but hypothetically speaking.

>>51882820

You could probably tap it open with a small nail if the watch was clamped but it'd be hard to put back on. Perhaps order one of those caseback tools if you can get one from where it won't take a month to arrive.

My grandfather's DX (aka Seiko 5 by another name). I find interesting that Seiko was able to include hacking and metal date-change mechanisms on their low-end mechanical movements in 1974, yet these concepts elude them in 2015.

Swap the strap out then, Fliegers are pretty sexy on mesh.

There are cheaper Fliegers and more expensive Fliegers.
Tisell is a middle market for the Flieger, coming in at $150 for a ST25 movement Flieger and about $200 for a Mioyta 9015 movement Flieger.

If you don't want to spend as much money you can get a Parnis, but it will likely be of lower quality.

>Cheap (sub 150)
Parnis
Seiko 5 Flieger (can't remember the exact model name but it's a bit of a demi-meme).
Various quartz and chink mechs.

>Mid range (150 - 500)
Tisell
Aristo
Steinhart
Various other microbrands of varying quality and price.

>Genuine (Expect 500 bare minimum, up to thousands).
Laco
Stowa
IWC

The more you pay, the nicer the watch will be, but if you just casually want a Flieger watch, definitely don't go dropping more than you can afford to lose on a whim.

>>51883523

It is a helmet case, a little chibi-helmet. I disagree that Seiko makes boring stuff now, but I do like a lot of the design elements from 1970s Seikos, especially the hooded lugs. I've also got an Elnix and two Penisquartz units. I feel the JDM ones have aged better, but I still think the 6106 is cool, it reminds me of a nautical instrument for some reason. >>
>>51888147
There's nothing that special about putting in a battery for it, except a rubber spacing ring. Just make sure it's seated properly, that's it.
>>
>>51885946
Depends on how much you're willing to spend. I paid under $600 for the normal 38mm version. The 42mm is a bit nicer with the sapphire crystal but was probably 2big4me. It's rated for -10/+40/day, but mine seems to be running about +20/day.

I really wish I would have got on the 3133 train in 2007 or so when they were going for dirt cheap, but I didn't have any money or know about watches then and the hype has been building since.

>>
>>51888619
Actually in the 1850s wristwatches didn't exist and railroad chronometer pocketwatches were required to be within 30 seconds per week. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railroad_chronometer

I think pocket fedoras are pretty interesting actually, but I don't own any. Railroads would have a watchmaker regulate and set all their watches, the person actually using the watch was given only a winding key and wasn't given the key to set the time.
>>
>>51888748
So statistically would 10s/day meet the 30s per week requirement in most instances?
>>
>>51888941
If you do the proper statistical propagation of errors way of adding the daily errors together then yeah I guess so, but it doesn't seem right to me to assume that every day has a random error. I think it's much more likely that a watch will have a pretty consistent error such that you can just add the errors together, so +30 s/week should be roughly +4 s/day or +120 s/month.

Here's a thread which is sort of relevant to that though: http://forums.watchuseek.com/f9/methods-determining-accuracy-watch-382752.html

What watch is that?
>>
>>51891405
Seagull 1963.

It's a pretty nice looking watch and probably the cheapest mechanical chronograph you can buy and the movement and watch both actually have a neat little history. It's a remake of China's first domestic-built air force watch, and the movement was designed by a Swiss company called Venus and then Seagull bought up the design plus Venus's entire factory when they went out of business and shipped it all to China. In theory it should be very nice since it's a column wheel chrono which is pretty impressive for being so cheap.

Unfortunately it's sort of let down by Seagull's poor quality control of such a delicate finicky movement, and also it has zero water resistance and a movement famous for being prone to shitting the bed and an acrylic crystal (there's a sapphire option but it looks a lot worse) which all combine to make it a pretty delicate watch. Plus you may or may not like the vintage styling and the fact that it makes you look like a communist.

Dogshit.

But if you want advice: metal that recieves a black coating tends to be fragile and flake and look crap unless you're paying pretty significant money. Partly because only really expensive watches tend to get the best coating treatments. Dogshit watches get the low end coatings
>>

So don't go for ones that are coated?

I wouldn't.

Lots of watches have a brushed or blasted finish. And if you don't like bracelets (if they're too shiny for you), near any watch that comes on a bracelet can be put on a nato strap or leather strap if desired.

I would recommend you avoid NASTY NASTY DOGSHIT, FUCKEROONIE.

I'm less militant than most of /wt/ so I say if you want a black watch that badly then I guess go for it. The real problem spot for black coated watches is the bracelet, because that rubs on everything and starts to peel very quickly. If you get a black watch without a bracelet then you don't have to worry about that, and the coating on the case should hold up well for a while as long as you're not a hamfisted retard or something. Look into the Timex Expedition Chrono, I think it seems like a pretty good option and Timex is at least a pretty solid budget brand, whereas MVMNT and all those other mnmlst hipster watches are poorly made dogshit. And it's a very popular watch and at below $50 it's a god damn steal.

>>
>>51895549
You're going to need to service a watch every few years, whatever it is you choose.
Either it's quartz and you will need to change the batteries, or it's mechanical and the moving parts will wear and it will need oiling.
To be honest, the watches that would stand the passage of time best without any attention at all would probably be one of those 10-year battery life casios.
>>
>>51895597
Don't get me wrong, I'll definitely service it. I mean lets say I service it regularly, and then leave it sitting without being used (no batteries, stopped if mechanical) for the next generation to have. I want them to be able to use it (of course after taking care of it, servicing, etc). I just don't want a watch that breaks down easily.

Have you gone on ebay and seen all the old mechanical watches up for sale? There's no reason why a watch can't outlast you if you just give it a basic servicing every once in a while.
>>
>>51895931
Have you? 99% of them are "NON-WORKING SAMPLE".
>>
>>51895879
It's a quartz watch, not a lot of mechanical wear. That's the life of the lubricants which presumably they'll still have in the distant future.
>>
>>51893825
Alpha Paul Newman has almost the same movement as the Seagull 1963 (but with an extra useful unajustable 24h complication). The dial print quality makes it look like a $20 watch, not a $200 one.

Old Citizen chronos are pretty neat, and more reliable than the Seiko counterparts from what I've heard.

Back in third year university, I knew this Chinese exchange student who had a Rolex Explorer and an IWC of some sort, and he'd rotate back and forth between them every other day. This. As long as you can get someone who knows how to open the damn thing up (which may necessitate a visit to a mountain temple in Neo Japan one bright morning in 2065 in order to visit the Order of the Seiko Shills) then there's no reason why a 9F won't last literally forever. As much as I like mechanicals, I am actually seriously considering a 9F at some point.

Cons:
You can't sell it back and can never get back on those $50.

Pros:
It costs less than the loss of value of a Rolex after you bought it.
You're not wasting a fortune on it and can do more interesting, memorable, longer lasting things instead.
You won't cry the day you scratch it.
Most people will think it's a Rolex, watchfags too unless they scrutinize it in depth.

It's a watch. I like good looking watches, and I can afford them, but if I couldn't, I clearly wouldn't. Unless you're obviously rich, there are way finer things to do with that money than parading around with a nice watch, which at best will only make you look like someone who overspends and has shit priorities in life. Trust me, I've been there.

If you like the look, get the look. Otherwise, wait until you're rich enough that people don't judge everything you do.

Rolex Submariner. Rolex now has a 10 year service interval. If things go bad, you can sell it without taking too much of a depreciation hit. The movement is tough and the materials are solid.

You can go past the 10 year service interval, and it will keep good time, but it will start to wear the internal parts, which means that the next servicing will cost more.

Whatsup /g/entoomen, i inherited a circa 1910 Longines 4 Grands Prix, the movement works but only when standing vertical like pic related. It needs a new front glass and to remove the bumps from the back cover, but otherwise is functional. How difficult should be to get someone to put a new glass, new indicators, and replace the balancer spring? (it is because of that that only works vertical) I want to keep it mostly because sentimental value and family heritage (it is from my great great grandfather)

>>51897389
If you need the antimagnetic resistance, you can get a Sinn, Dievas or Damasko antimagnetic for around €1,000, maybe a bit less.

It can be done, but unfortunately it won't be cheap. You'll want to check around some of the repairers and restorers in your country and get a feel for what they are offering.

Tisell Type A Flieger.
>>
>>51898008
Sure, if you're not put off by the fact that you may need to set the time (and maybe date) when you do wear it.
Or you could get a handwinding movement and just keep it wound.
>>
>>51898008
If it had a handwind feature, yes. For the 7s26 you'll have to shake it a bit if you'll only wear it for a short time or will be relatively inactive.
>>
>>51898008
No, unless you make sure the watch is always charged up even when you're not wearing it. A watch which mechanism is not running incurs damage quite quickly.

The original poster asked about a mechanical watch he wouldn't be able to wear "all day", you autistic retarded mongoloid sperg, not whether it would be okay to let it sit without running for months or years.

As long as a mechanical is wound in some manner ever couple of weeks it actually end up taking less wear than if it was running all the time due to less wear and tear on the moving parts.
>>
>>51898443
A lot will depend on the winding efficiency of the 7s26. From what I know, it should be pretty good, but maybe not at the level of the various ETA movements or the more modern Seiko ones.

I have plenty of reasons to complain about the Swatch group, but winding efficiency isn't one of them. Even with minimal activity sitting at my desk I've never had an ETA 2824-2 give me trouble.
>>
>>51898651
Ok, thanks for the answer.

I've been digging for some quartz from Casio but I don't really like their dials. Timex is fine but I want something silent.

That Seiko 5 fits the spot of something I can wear daily and also at weekends perfectly.

>pass on your watch to the next generation

Wew, you are spouting the same memes that the makers of these watches do in every vid possible. Congrats on being brainwashed.
Do you know any family that has passed a watch for at least 3 generations? No? Well, this is due to the fact that the children often sell the watch, because the probability is high that they don't share the same taste/interest in watches like you do and just to make some fast money, when the watch is worth something.

Stop sucking the mountain jews industries cock and wake the fuck up, pal.
Watches are just marketed garbage if they surpassed a certain price point.

No you little faggot, most watches stay in the box until they are sold. The only care they get (or a lot of the times only should be getting) is a service by a contracted watchmaker every few years. That's one of the reasons models that are a few years old get discounted, the stores want to get rid of them before they have to pay for a mandatory service of their stock.

Stop babbling nonsense like a retard when you clearly don't know shit.
