Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight

No news.

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Changing an X230 screen from TN -> IPS just as simple as ordering one off ebay and swapping them out?
>>
>>51871819
yeah, but getting the new screen in and not killing the old one can be pretty tough
>>
>tfw just got my thinkpad today
>x220
>I thought the screen was going to look shit because 1366x768
>its not shit.

This keyboard wasn't a meme btw. I like this machine.
>>
Bought my first Thinkpad about a month ago - the t450s. I pimped it out quite a bit (i7, 12gb ram, full hd display) so it definitely wasn't cheap, but the durability is what sold me. I travel a lot and the Dells I've had before just couldn't handle it.

Now, I had quite a few problems with this laptop straight out of the box. First of all, the machine didn't know how to fucking go to sleep. It would go to sleep successfully 1/3 of the time at most, the rest of the time it would freeze up and go into a full shutdown. Also, Chrome crashed regularly when using youtube, the display would momentarily turn off then back on, my wifi would freeze up and wouldn't work until I restarted the computer. Pretty basic shit that shouldn't be happening with a brand new $1,500 laptop.

Finally I realized that the thing was running almost entirely with Windows 8 drivers. It came with Windows 10 pre-installed, so what the fuck gives? I've been very happy with this laptop otherwise and updating to Windows 10 drivers seems to have fixed the problems for now, but Lenovo really pissed me off with this. Not a good first impression.
>>
>>51872168
So a new laptop didn't have all of its drivers preinstalled? I'm not shocked, and it should have been your first thought.
>>
>>51872160
This is why you shouldn't fall for the "1366x768 is bad on every display" meme.
>>
>>51872239
First thing I did when I opened it was run every update I could find, but that didn't fix it. I had to manually update each driver myself.

It's pretty fucking frustrating when you drop over $1,500 on a laptop, and you can't even play youtube or close the lid without the thing shitting the bed.
>>
Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting an all-in-one computer for college and I figured an T450 would work pretty well. Is this a good idea, or should I go desktop + cheap chromebook? It just seems like a hassle to me

Probably the worst Thinkpad to grace the T series. Doesn't really have any redeeming features. ULV Haslells that perform worse than Sandy Bridge, still only up to 900p TN screen, no dGPU option, only one RAM slot, worst keyboard and trackpad. At least the T440p has good specs and the T440s has good screens.

Purchade Y/N? If you think it's expensive or whatever it's Europe, tech costs a shitload here. Mostly unsure if it's a good buy given that it doesn't have the classic keyboard on it.
>>
>>51875240
>X230
>HD 3000
Wouldn't do it m8. The only real benefit of the X230 over the X220 is the much-improved HD 4000 iGPU. Wiki says HD 3000 is indeed a possible config on the X230, so it's not just a case of an ignorant seller like I initially thought when reading your post. If you don't need the grafix, just go for a cheaper X220 instead and you won't have to compromise on the keyboard.
>>
I just bought a t420 and am having a hard time installing any os onto it. I tried USB stick installations for both elementary os and win7 but both keep hanging and freezing at random parts of the installation. Could this be a problem with the USB ports on the thing, considering it happens on every port, or something else? Please help I'm getting really frustrated

So what does /tpg/ think about literally installing gentoo on my new t430?

Usually I just go with Arch.

Should I try it? Is it just too cumbersome running gentoo on a laptop considering compile times?
>>
>>51875351
Honestly the upgrade is so easy I wouldn't bother searching for one, just grab a cheaper 4gb/non ssd model and upgrade them.

I picked up my X230 (TN, i5, HD4000, 4gb, 320mech) for 320 AUD (230 USD), plus RAM + IPS + SSD and I've only spent 560 AUD (400 USD) for an almost perfect casual internet browsing, dota 2 linux box.
>>
>>51876194

Well, I did find a X230 that has the HD 4000 chip, but it's on action so not sure how expensive it'll be... I guess I'll bid on the fucking thing, couldn't hurt.
>>
I asked this yesterday already but got no reply, so here we go again.

So I am buying a new battery for my X201, and I found a lot of them on ebay for like 25 dollars. The sellers say they are "genuine original" and the batteries on the pics look the same as my current original battery.
Are these some kind of good fakes or are they really original batteries?
Thanks.
>>
>>51876484
Looks like that's about the right price for genuines for the X201. Thinkpad battery prices vary heavily between models, I paid $100 for a new 9cell for my X220 but only $40 for one for my T420. If the Lenovo logo is on the battery, it's genuine.
>>
>>51876163
Nah. Use Arch, f am.
There isn't a big difference of performance on compiling everything.

But of course you can do it for fun If it isn't your main computer
>>
>>51872168
>>51872327
This lack of attention to detail has been happening a lot lately at Lenovo, and it's really quite frustrating. My brother recently ordered an X250 and specifically indicated that he wanted Windows 10 pro with the Windows 7 downgrade when ordering the computer. Lo and behold, the computer came with Windows 10 HOME preinstalled and no Win 7 disc in sight. What was even more infuriating is when we called up Lenovo, their customer service reps insisted that we had not upgraded to the Pro version and wanted us to pay another $30, even though it was plainly listed on the order form. Very unimpressive service for a $1,000 "professional grade" laptop.

>>51873557
I had one issued to me at my old company and I hated it. Awful screen that wobbled when you typed, trackpad was nigh unusable, keyboard is annoying since they took away the T430's dedicated volume and mute buttons. I would personally not buy one with my own money. I know that /g/ has a well-known tendency to come around and start loving things it previously hated. The T400 was shit all over when it first came out because of the keyboard, now it's seen as a solid but outdated choice. The T420 was shit all over when it first came out because of the 16:9 screen, now it's the most recommended model here. People are even warming up to the T430. But all that being said, I don't think the T440 is ever going to get any love at all. The other models all had some sort of redeeming quality, but the T440... just trash all around.

so i have this wierd issue on my X220t.
the left click on the clickpad or trackpad doesnt work properly on gaymen when the keyboard is being used.

by instance, on TF2 i cant shoot, i just mash either button and sometimes it shoot but most of the time it doesnt.
on Hotline Miami 2 i have a similar issue, sometimes i can hit but most of the time dont.

its this a new feature? because my old X60 does not behave like that?
>>
>>51880453
are you using windows 8 or 10?
>>
>>51880529
yes, im on Windows 10
>>
>>51880615
Well, what you are experienced is a feature on Windows 8 and 10 created for consumer grade laptops, windows disables the left click when the keyboard is active so you dont get these annoying bumps when writing documents in the even your hand goes in contact with the touchpad.

this feature its a little moot on a thinkpad as i believe you (and probably most of us) have the touchpad permanently disabled.

To disable this feature you need to edit the registry key at

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PrecisionTouchPad

look for the key called "AAPThreshold" (its probably set to 2) and set it to 0 (zero).

Reboot and you can now click on your gaymen while using the keyboard,

Yes to everything except the processor. I'm not sure about it. The w520 comes with a quadcore. If the BIOS allows for a quadcore, you would still be looking at a cooling problem and a significant battery decrease.

x220 if you really need to spend 200 dollars.

An x201 for 120 would leave you enough room to buy a dock and a new 9 cell battery.

For what you're doing, you probably won't notice a performance difference.

The two 770Z laptops from the 770 lot I bought ended up having the uncommon 'rare' 13.7" SXGA panel, so I can have muh 5:4 aspect ratio.
One has a bios lock but it doesn't matter, might just swap the 770ED board if resetting the BIOS is annoying, i have the reset board for it.

Backlights are difficult to do.
I normally break the tabs that retain the CCFL and then replace.
Its a bitch to do, i will seal it up with tape and call it a day.

Make sure you clean the LCD before trying it, you could get dust inside the screen which is like impossible.

Does the T420 have some kind of ambient light sensor or some shit like that? I notice the screen gets significantly brighter when I have anything bright on screen, and then dims slowly when something dark is on screen. To anybody who has a W530 or an ThinPad with a 170 Watt Barrel connector charger:
If you want to save around $150 for a docking station 3 get the cheap ass 90 Watt docking station. Either shimmy the connector of your 170 Watt barrel connector or try to change the jack with a little drill.

Lenovo is shitting you all guys. Those fucking stations can easily handle 8.5 Ampere. The make $150 more with a change of about $1.

You can only upgrade to other Sandy Bridge processors. Ivy Bridge is a possibility, but only with a BIOS mod that's still quite early in development. I'd say it's not really worth buying an upgrade unless you're going to go all-out and get a quadcore i7. There's really not a lot of difference between all the hyperthreaded dualcores, even the non-quad i7s aren't noticeably stronger than your stock i5.

I tried and failed to replace a backlight in an old HP assembly. CCFL backlights are part of a fucking intricate nightmare assembly, if you do choose to go this route make sure to take pictures literally every step of the way.

Backlights were ~$12 or my HP, full assemblies were ~$46. After failing with the backlight I ended up parting out the laptop because it had other problems anyways.

If you're happy with the rest of the hardware in your x200, a full assembly is probably worth it just to avoid the aggravation. Only problem would be that a used assembly might still burn out on you in 6 months so idk

It isn't rare but if anything uncommon, the 's' designation means its lower powered
Its a nice little machine, I'd say the person who is selling it is asking a bit too much, I sold an X61T for $90 and it had a 160GB HDD, the IPS display on it made it a sought after model.

I had an X61s as my second machine, I liked the little damn thing, I had it four years ago so performance was great at the time, I wouldn't say it would be excellent now but if its used for shitposting yeah, speakers arent the best, its just mono.

Also the WiFi card gets hot, it would need the middleton bios and a cooler running wifi card, if not you'll have a hot right hand when using it.

Additionally if you are in San Diego I got a few I can sell for $10 each.

Thats a bit more expensive than I think you should pay, but that seller looks legit, I believe you get that exact unit.
Ask if the battery is OEM and/or what Lenovo Power Manager says about the battery

Not a great price. I got a decently loaded T420 (1600x900, dGPU, fingerprint reader, 90W adapter, excellent physical condition save for the trackpad) for $180 and a more basic T420s for $135. I guess it's serviceable if you really want 16:10, but you don't lose any vertical resolution by going for a T420 instead and you'll get much better longevity out of the hardware.

900p screen, but only integrated graphics. Still, since it's a T420, it's possible for you to upgrade the processor to an Ivy Bridge one to help with that if you need it. Not sure that I'd do it right now myself since the BIOS mod that allows it is relatively new, but the possibility is there.

It's honestly amazing what intel did to the iGPU in Ivy. Killed all entry level gfx cards in one shot.

My i7 is in an 8560w. I used arctic silver 5. I can't keep this bitch cool either. When I first replaced it it was staying 45-50 C at load but its back to being bad again. No idea what's up.

I can only recommend minor throttling until I find a better solution. What I do is keep it at 80% for normal use which never goes above 55, and I only allow 100% CPU when I do CAD or have a lot of programs open. You won't notice 20% slower CPU at all during normal shitposting/browsing/ etc. but your temps will be 20 C cooler.

Just received a X220 from eBay that I got for $240.

>i7
>120SSD
>8g ram
>brand new lenovo battery/charger

No IPS however, but the tn screen is in awesome condition.

It came with windows 7, but I sort of wanted Linux Mint with cinnamon on it. Is that a good route to go. If it means anything I'm a linux noob and just want an easy distro

How the hell did you get a W520 for under $300? I've been looking for weeks and the only ones that come up for that amount are usually in absolutely shit condition.
>>
>>51902243
Linux Mint is easy af to install/dualboot, and everything just werks on my t420, except the mic mute, and I have the speaker mute set as a custom hotkey because it'd mute 2 things and only unmute one.

they hate the integrated num pad because it's a bit extraneous when you're not purely dealing with numbers all day. It's also painful to use unless you have a detached one like pic related.
Do keep in mind that there are people on gee that pay 100USD + for a number pad

Was there ever any final consensus on the Thinkpad "Retro" from Chinkovo?
>>
How do you check the life stats of a battery? Is there a version for GNU/Linux of software that can do the same thing?
>>
>>51902426
Unless you're doing a bunch of multithreaded shit, don't bother. Despite the increased heat and power usage, the single-thread performance of the 2720QM is worse than the high-end i5s (2520M / 2540m) and the dual-core i7s. You would need a 2760QM or 2820QM to notice any difference at all, and once you're into those, you've got more heat than the T420 heatsink can handle.

The quad-cores are a bit of a meme, to an extent. Performance is theoretically better but real-world differences are less well-defined.

Yeah, change advanced power settings and adjust processor power management.

I think the newer dreamcolor panels are boss but the older ones (2011-2012) had lots of complaints of color bleeding. I only have the LG 1080p TN in mine.

Can confirm

I almost spent $100 on a goldtouch keypad shipping inclusive but managed to haggle the price down to $75

It's pretty amazing for what it is:
>dual layer pcb with numpad scancodes
>00 key
>2 USB ports to act as a mini hub
>mx browns that I will change to linear greys

It's impossible to find a power plug to charge it as well. Just FYI, Thinkpads don't run on frango and pasteis de nata.

Well, I just bought an x201.
For $120. Comes preloaded with a 128gb SSD and a 9 cell battery. Ships by Friday.

How good did I do, /tpg/?
>>
>>51903926

Bretty good, depending on the write cycles and battery cycles.
>>
>>51903988
Nice
Even if the battery and SSD are shit, I have replacements lined up. I only spent 40% of my budget, and the replacements will fill it up to 80%, so I'm still running a surplus. So hyped for it to arrive.

Looking to replace my x220T for somthing a bit newer, I like all the aspects of my current laptop apart from the batterylife, I have a 6 cell and cannot manage to get more than 4 hours from it without having to charge it, normally while I'm at uni through my powerbank...just cumbersome to have to remember to charge both up before the day.

budget is around £400, depending on how much I can get for my x220T (fully specced up) may be able to increase to £500, not looking for beefy specs, just a decent laptop with massive batterylife, no chromebooks please.

>>51904081
220t not cutting it? I was looking at picking one up soon to replace a shitty Samsung I had. Might have to look at the x230t than.
>>
>>51904112

don't get me wrong, its an amazing laptop, I love the utility and the keyboard sells it, a truly amazing keyboard...But I don't do anything demanding and need more batterylife as I have 8-10 hour days in uni somdays, so need to be able to use it no matter how much I use it.

The batterylife on all the T varients are lower than the non T's as they cannot accomodate a 9 cell only a 6 cell.

>>51904081
got pics and specs of your x220t?

only thing that's wrong with it. Keys havent bothered me at all, not noticeable in person, if it's a big deal replacement keyboard can be had for £20 tops.

>>51904612

no idea what it's worth nowadays as I can't seem to find any on ebay or similar sites.

How much, should I offer the guy/would you be willing to pay for it?

I am a first time thinkpad owner. My t420's genuine 9 cell battery is at 75% max capacity and drains battery at about 2% every 5 minutes. I have no nvidia card to switch off and my brightness is perpetually at 50%. Is this normal for a couple tabs of internet browsing?
>>
>>51870178
So what kind of special coating does the X220 keyboard have? I have this laptop for like 5 months now and the keys are just as clean as they were the day it arrived.
>>
>>51902460
Its still in fucking development, wait four more months
