I've been using matlab to an extreme level, but I realized that sooner or later I am going to graduate and have to pay for their slow environment 200 dollars + 40 per toolbox. So what other environment is similar to it? Where can I write relaxed matrix operations and stuff mainly for modelling and stuff without having to write a very strict language? Did I define python?

Matlab is a shit language used for introductory programming courses and it carries no real weight in the global tech community.

Say hello to Julia.

Just download it m8

He could be a materials science or cheme guy. For us, matlab does what we need just fine.
>>
>>51857614
I know but it's fairly easy to use if you are not running a serious computation and just doing modelling.

>>51857627
That actually is very interesting, thank you, I didn't know that.

>>51857634
Ethics and stuff. I can't.

Electrical engineering, and it does fine with what I do as well.

GNU Octave is a free Matlab implementation. It doesn't have all of the Matlab commands, but it is useful and free.
Python is also a language worth learning. There's SciPy.

Say all you faggots want about Haskell, but for mathematics, it is absolutely wonderful. Including matrices.

If you really don't want to be "strict" then Python is fine.

A replacement is Octave

Its also used to plot frequency response graphs design filters for analogue and digital signals it will also produce optimised C code for DSP chips
>>
>>51857579
why would you buy it?

your employer should supply it

also there are only a few people that need to use it in the real world. I have seen it used once since I left uni

Octave it is then, thank you.

Scilab?

Employer provides it when I'm employed, which I don't believe is going to happen instantly after I graduate, and I still need to be able to publish. Also my last employer had only 5 licenses which was sad.

Also it's used extensively in EE industry, namely IC design and evaluation, just because there are toolboxes that makes things easy. It can be easily migrated if they become available in other platforms.

Come in OP
I torrented matlab like 2 Werks ago
Its not that hard
>>
Ever heard of 'R' ?
>>
>>51857828
I bought all the games I pirated as a kid when I first got a paying job. I can't go back.
>>
>>51857861
Well then buy matlab when you have your job. Meanwhile use a pirated version
>>
I migrated from a matlab environment to one that runs entirely on ipython. There are a lot of conveniences missing, but I like it so far.

>>51857579
Octave or R. R is more mature.
