A Linksys E3000 with Shibby's Tomato.
I would love to get a pfsence server with tons of gigabit cards, and wifi adapters and another gigabit switch, but I simply don't have the time or money to do that. I have some piece of shit router that my ISP gave me.
pfsense backlogged my appliance order like 2 months, so i canceled it and got this. also it has something like 10-16X wifi mA power rating than the shitty nic that would have just been hanging out of that appliance.
Anyone that uses DD-WRT over OpenWRT or AsusWRT in this day and age is fucking retarded. Literal garbage software.

tplink 1043nd v2. cheapest gigabit router available in local stores.
Memebox 3490.
It doesn't have a billion antennas, yet it has still outstanding wifi. It also has so many options (like dynDNS) and really good QoS.
I love the box so much and wouldn't replace it for anything but a really good pfsense box, which won't happen since electricity is way too expensive here and I already have a server running.
>>51817297
Mikrotik router, cost about 400 euros.
D-Link DI-524 A1, along with a Motorola SB5100 cable modem from 2002. My WRT-54G just died on me yesterday after being my main router for like 12 years
wrt54gs v1.0@tomato shibby for last 10 years or so.
It is slow tho, struggles with QoS on 12/1.25 line, will have to upgrade soon.

it's not that problematic, for example for a TP-Link router, it's just a regular firmware upgrade. Of course, you need to download the appropriate firmware.

Planning to buy a WR1043ND when it dies, but I don't think it will in the next 3-4 years hopefully. :^) It's 3 years old now.
>>51817384
Memes aside, 802.11ac can use up to 8 antennas to achieve a theoretical throughput of about 7 Gb/s
802.1ac WiFi can beat Gigabit Ethernet under good conditions
>>51817934
They used to sell a 8xlan + wifi router that had 2 minipcie addon slots and extra stuff like drives, wifi modules etc. you could put in the slots, idk if that's still an option. You can however buy a router mobo from them, some of them are quite customizable but way expensive for what they are.
>>51817520

>>51817297
I recently installed this $12 device for grandma.
Arguably, I also use it when I visit. Works fine for NAS access, printing, internet, 4 port switch.
>>51820322
So, the same speed as 3 antennas.
If you have 8 antennas, what all different directions do you point them at? You don't actually point them upwards as shown in the picture do you?
>>51817617
So what, it's got 3 internal antennae its range is excellent.
>>51817688
What makes you think the 5ghz range is shit? How do you know it's not your wifi client device that's crap
Only reason I got this was the internal vdsl modem. Pretty locked down in terms of what I can do with it now though.
>he has a $300 router

Why do people do this? Also any opinions on modems with built in WiFi? Worth it or not?
>>51821075
I use a 300€ router bridged over that fucking 25€ cable modem.
Sometimes the provider won't let you. There are still benefits in getting a proper router.
>>51817726
try Asuswrt-Merlin, it also charts out download and upload throughput by MAC, so you can find how much who is using.
>>51817297
the one my isp gifted me
>>51821075
> Also any opinions on modems with built in WiFi? Worth it or not?
... why would it be worth it? Use the modem your provider gives (or a better one if necessary), then your own AP to do WLAN.
That way you don't have to get a piece of shit combined device that also gets obsolete with BOTH standard changes on your ISP's cable / DSL / ... protocols, and WLAN protocols.
>>51817456
enjoy your back door, faggot.
>>51821275
My predicament is the modems my provider has given me don't seem to be capable of handling more then 10mbps, which is absurd because I'm paying for 75, plus a $10 a month rental fee for said shitty modems. They've sent me multiple ones and all the same issue. They're the only ISP in the area so I'm essentially stuck with them, my only recourse is to buy my own modem and hope it solves the problem.
>>51817297
So that's a Cybran communication node?
>>51821329
What are the odds that they know they can't deliver more than 10mbps but just don't want to admit it for legal reasons... (they got subsidies and they have a contract with you, right)?
Alas, sure, try your own modem, but still don't bother to get one with built-in WLAN, unless it happens to be otherwise great and you can turn WLAN off later on.
>>51821229
>the one my isp gifted me
Pleb to the max.

I had a dgl 4500 that just died. I just now purchased an Asus Rt-ac68u. Did I fuck up? It was the only decent model available nearby
The plan:
Archer C9 (stock) feeds two WNDR4300 (openWRT) through a wireless bridge. An old 2950 switch connects to an my computer, work computer and the C9 which is then routed through an old Dell machine repurposed as a router.
I am setting it all up again as one of the WNDR4300s used to feed two other routers, but the one bit it.
Having problems with all this new equipment. I think my the other side of my wireless bridge is feaking out. My new TV seems to be trying to get at everything on that side of the bridge. Also, my 2950 seems to be blocked DHCP, but fixing that is kinda why I bought it.

The most any actual AP chipset has right now is 4x4, and the most a client-side card has is 3x3.
Also most equipment right now is only 80MHz channel width.
So the most you ever really see would be 433x3 = 1300.
But wifi has all sorts of overhead and such, so the most you'll actually get is about 60% of that, or about 800 mbps.
