Enjoying my 390x thus far.
>>
>>51814133
Yea. I got a 7950 in 2012 and loved it so I bought a second one. These little things really were ahead of their time.

Too bad game devs are lazy shits and no one can figure out how to use a dual gpu setup in normal environments.
>>
So I'm considering building a secondary system to use on my TV downstairs. My upstairs rig is an i7 4790k @ 4.2ghz, 16GB of ram, and a 980, and this system is hooked up to a 1920 x 1080 144hz monitor and a 1920 x 1080 60hz monitor. For my downstairs PC I'm thinking i5 4690k and 8GB of RAM, but I'm not really sure what GPU to get. The 970 is a great price, but I'm concerned about the 3.5GB of VRAM thing. Would a 390 be a suitable option for this type of setup? It's 100% for games and movies, as my upstairs PC is my workstation/gaming rig.
>>
>>51814990
Absolutely. Either the 970 or the 390 would be great choices.

Honestly, you may even be able to get away with a 380 or 960
>>
>>51814040
Some times they're great (r9 200 series) other times they're underwhelming or shit (r9 300 series).

>>
>>51814990

>for a secondary rig used for movies
mirin tbrh my man. desu I'd just get a used 290. it'll cost at most ~$200 and will have similar performance at a 970 with a genuine 4gb of ram. since it's a secondary rig for mostly movies, the risk of buying used might be worth it

better in multi GPU setups, 4k, and in single GPUs under $500. The only Nvidia card worth considering is the 980ti which will be keked by DX12 thanks to a lack of async compute.

Which 390 is generally the best? I've been looking at MSI, Powercolor and XFX, but they're all 2.5/3 slot cards or have shitty clocks. Is it just best to stay with Sapphire even if I can get the Powercolor for $30 cheaper?

Long story short I have a wifi card on the slot PCI slot and a 3 slot card will have one of the fans practically against it.

I'm running 290X CF. AMD's support this year has really been shit for CF and a lot of the cool features they released are either buggy or half assed. CF profiles are an endangered species at this point, you're lucky if you get one for a major AAA release, smaller titles which could still benefit immensely don't exist as far as AMD is concerned (i.e. Act of Aggression, Vermintide).

The "power saving" features that came with Crimson are fucking retarded, there's no actual option to always run your GPUs at max clocks when a 3D load is present. The frame rate limiter is fucking terrible too, it's quite unstable and introduces a lot of stutter, which is exactly what it should prevent. A 3rd party tool (RTSS) does this MUCH more effectively than AMD's own implementation and it isn't even Radeon-specific. FreeSync works quite nicely I guess, but a FPS limiter is generally needed to make proper use of it and the one AMD made sucks.

Overall I'm quite disappointed. They would have to put out something VERY, VERY impressive with Arctic Islands to make me upgrade to that instead of Pascal.

my 6870 just ate it. started getting pink artifacts and half of screen missing. even the Boot screen shows white pixels.

rip

gonna buy a 750 ti to cover for now. Then probably a 390 or used 290 later.
>>
>>51816326
Yea my 280 is starting to get that. Why not just save up the money and get a 390? You won't be able to do anything with that 750 ti when the new set of GPUs come out and you can't crossfire it if you decide to get AMD cards.
>>
>>51816148
Is the Black Edition worth the additional clock? Seems like a +50 would be easy to achieve on a standard card. That's the only difference between the two XFX cards right?

Shit and I will never buy again, I'm having all kind of problems that I didn't when I used nvidia, its goes in a cycle, when I fix one problem another one appears and now I'm tired, I let this shit flicker my screen when watching something in full screen until I get really pissed and toss this piece of shit into the trash.

AMD fucking never again

Was planning on buying a new socket halfway through this year(775 still).

However a new GPU is a need now.

So I'd rather just spend a bit to hold me over.

Mostly to play Path of Exile, which runs terribly on AMD cards anyways.

But plan to go AMD later when I can buy an actual card with memory.

>>51816411
Dat power consumption.

Thanks for the info though, always nice to find out equivalents and such.

>XFX
- Use lesser quality components (caps, VRMs, etc)
- Is fine if you're in USA (maybe Canada) as you get lifetime warranty.
- DO NOT buy if you aren't in USA/Canada as you only have 2 year warranty on lesser quality gear.

>MSI
Not worth it, there is a reason they disappeared from a lot of markets - warranty is a huge hassle if you need it and they're usually just overpriced edgy 'gaymur' gear.

>Sapphire
Best-in-class for AMD reference and 2nd best for custom PCBs

>Asus
Usually behind in reference designs, unless it's 100% reference (inc. cooler) as their custom coolers never seem to line up with the GPU die.
Best-in-class for custom PCBs though, take a look at a 290/390X DC2 pcb sometime, it's fucking work of art.
>>
>>51816601
Forgot to mention:
>Powercolor
Better quality than XFX, but not by much - generally safer just to buy Sapphire.

>Club3D
Made in USA, only sold in USA - no idea of the quality, someone else will have fill this in.

>Gigabyte
Generally avoid Gigabyte cards in general - both AMD and nVidia - too many problems after 12 months and they generally only ship with 12 month warranty.
Yes, even the G1 cards.
>>
>>51816601
So basically pay the $6 extra for the Sapphire 390 over the XFX. It's 10 after the rebate, but what's $10 anyway.
>Club3D
Newegg doesn't sell the 390(x) version and since Amazon charges tax adding another $25 or so. Also can't really find any reviews on it.

Unless there's a massive GPU shift for whatever comes out after the Fury I'd like to possibly water cool and SLI these cards. How big of a difference is a full cover vs semi cover block? http://www.overclock.net/t/1561704/official-amd-r9-390-390x-owners-club says the PCS+ has a full cover and the Sapphire only has a semi, but I'm probably looking too far in the future.
>>
>>51816623
Well fuck got a 980 G1 gaming, I hope it doesn't crap out on me in a mere 12months, it cost me an arm and leg. I expect it to last at the very least 3 years until I need to upgrade to a 4k single GPU solution.

If it fucks up on me before 12months, I'll just RMA it, and if their service is horrible or the card fucks up shortly after warranty expires I'll wait on a decent 14nm GPU avoiding gigabyte products like the plague and double checking how good the RMA service is for the new product even if it costs a bit more.

I hear people praising EVGA wonder how well they honour their waranty, their step up program sounds nice too.

As for Saphire I hear their products are good but RMA is apperantly horrible as they use athlon micro.

Hell, my older budget MSI 6870 has been soldiering on after nearly 4 years without a single hitch, still running strong.

Try enabling AFR mode. It worked for me with some small titles (Hatred for example)

My AMD has never not done this every once in a blue moon. Very rarely but it has happened.

I usually just shrug and reboot and it's fine, not set up a camcorder waiting for it to happen again then post it to youtube.

Mirin a 390X. On an R9 270X ATM which replaced, on an old rig, a 4850 which was never not rock solid for me, the 4850 while it ran a bit hot at times was a fucking great babbys first build card and was super solid for me.

Holy nigger titties!

That's exactly what happens to me on my Sapphire R9 280x Toxic Edition. But never during a game. Only while browsing internet/youtubeing. When no sound is present, it's just silent. When I try to turn it on, it takes a few seconds, I hear a whirr noise from the speaker, and then it boots. Similar issue?
>>
>>51814220
That has also happened many times to me with an old hd6850. I wonder what the actual problem may be as the bios fix nor any catalyst drivers prevented from happening again.

Same here. And I have a Sapphire Vapor-X 280x. It does not crash though, just passes around 1-2 seconds and it returns to normal. Also never happens when GPU is under stress/gaming. Weird as fuck.

Pretty decent. My gf use a sapphire HD 7950, pretty good temps, high oc capability. My roomate got a evga gtx 960, similar to hd 7950 but more heat. So honestly, both cards are very decent and I would have hard time deciding which one to refer for someone

I own an Asus HD 7970 direct cuii, medium OC but even stock it runs extremly hot and noisy.

Considering that, And the fact I got a pretty good deal, i bought myself a Gtx 970 msi gaming, lol thats a completly diffrent story. Huge oc potenticial, no noise, no heat :P so far, from my experience with these 4 gpus, nvidia leds by 1 points

I upgraded from Radeon HD 7750 to HD 7850 and experienced an instant upgrade as my Catzilla benchmark scores went from around 4000 to 8500, and 10300 with OC

I was getting a new gpu about four months ago and went with a 290 over a 960 at the same price. Why wouldn't I be happy about it. Overclocked with tess turned down its as fast as a 980.
>>
>>51814040
I want to like them, but on both of the cards I've tried I've had issues with the displayport. One of them didn't work at all (but only after drivers were installed) and on the other I'd randomly lose signal every so often (but only when drivers were installed). DVI ports worked fine but I can't use those for my main monitor. I've had no issues with displayport on nvidia cards.
>>
gpus are very similar in quality nowadays thanks to improved manufacturing techniques and software. close enough where the main criterion for purchasing a new card is price/performance ratio.
>>
Do you think the new Radeon Technology Group will mean a return to form for AMD's graphics cards, or is it too little too late?
