For all the flaws it had, Vista still was (and perhaps still is) the best looking Windows system.

I'm not crazy about windows' idea of material design, but I'm not against it either. I'll always be a fan of material + small pixel fonts, though. Too bad the demographic is blind sighted 40 year old corporates.

Vista was never bad, just hardware intensive.
They bundled it on a bunch of terrible laptops and desktops and it got a bad wrap
if you actually had the hardware to run it, it was great
it started out shit but by the time everyone had upgraded to 7 Vista was completely patched up. The differences between Vista and 7 fully updated are pretty minor
Windows 8.1 is better than both of them though, and you can avoid 99% of the metro bullshit now.

Vista SP2 is basically windows 7.
Also the bits they changed for 7 look like shit, e.g. the taskbar which becomes unreadable if you have a bright wallpaper
But Win7 looks just like that
Vista was actually the second-worst. Like Windows 2000 and Windows ME, it was the one many simply skipped over, running the version before until the version after came out. XP for lyfe ;)

Not true at all for the first 6 months. Main issue was hard drive thrashing caused by indexing services. If you installed office or if was there by default the indexing services would loop over each other completely destroying responsivenes and also causing lag and low ram issues. Plus micro soft stupidly decided to label weedy machines exorcising net books as vista basic ready. They weren't at all and they were crippled at startup. Many having 1 or less gb ram. Plus of course all the other stuff like signed divers meaning that all your old hardware accessories won't work on it, and random crashes because of botched updates. But yeah sure look at it through rose tinted glasses

they put fucking random gloss and over-the-top effects everywhere, then they put fucking unreadable-ass text in an ugly font ontop of this mess of greenish-blue smudges, then they said 'oh shit our text isn't readable' and added some of the ugliest drop shadows known to man, and half of them were the wrong colour anyway and the text was even harder to read
then they did ridiculous things that baffle me to this day, like renaming bits of the control panel for no reason, or removing the dropdown menus from explorer and replacing them with some useless ugly blue bar
also, fun fact: minimum required specs for windows vista were:
800MHz processor
512mb ram
SVGA graphics
let me tell you right now that's total borscht
Is it possible to get Vista to XP snappyness levels by removing shit tons of services?
I don't care if you all think 10 or linux would be better for my old laptop, I still have the original Vista box and want it to install on my X61 tablet again.

reminder that Windows 8 runs faster than Windows Vista on the same legacy hardware that Vista was fucking _designed_ to run on. MS had to refactor the shit out of their code in order to make it run smoothly on tablets.
