!!!!PURCHASING ADVICE GUIDELINES!!!!

When seeking purchasing advice, list your country/carrier, what phones are in your price range, and your budget at minimum

Simply asking for advice without stating your nation/carrier and listing what devices are available to you and also stating budget will likely get no response!

the G4 is the better deal, sure the OP2 has the SD810, but it over heats anyway and can't be used to it's full extent, might as well get the G4 with SD808, which still overheats, but at least less than SD810.

If you can get the Note5 instead of the S6 that would be a better choice as the S6 battery life is subpar and it is somewhat limited by it's 3GB of RAM because touchwizz uses a decent bit of RAM.

The note5 is the exact same phone but slightly larger, with a bigger battery, and 4GB of RAM instead of 3GB.

Or since you are on AT&T you may wish to look at the S6 Active. It is an S6 but with a larger battery, ruggedized build, and physical buttons instead of capacitive buttons, it also gets rid of the finger print scanner.
The biggest issue with the S6 active is android updates generally run 3-5 months behind the normal S6.
>>
>>51808232
not sure. It's on my parents' plan so it will either be subsidized on 2 year contract or a monthly payment
>>51808268
I find the size of the Note to be absurd. I'm used to a 4.3" phone, and I feel hesitant about going up to a 5.2 even. The fact that there are no sub 5" phones available from att is kind of upsetting. The S6 active looks somewhat interesting
>>
>>51808268
The S6 is one of the coolest looking phones right now, at least if it came in non-camo. IDK if it does or not.

Reminds me of the tablets from Battlestar Galactica
>>
>>51808346
>subsidized on 2 year contract

Pretty sure that ends up adding 200-250 bucks to their bill over a 2 year period

>The fact that there are no sub 5" phones available from att is kind of upsetting.

At least they can justify that with not wanting to have a camera bump on the back of their phone. The shitty software however is just unacceptable, and ruins a really good camera sensor. Hoping that they will improve on that in updates to come, but I wouldn't put my money on it

They just should make the battery larger so they don't have to make a camera bump.

Pretty much in every fucking way, I cannot ever recommend an Ass sauce phone.

The specs might look good for the price, but evidently they run like shit, have shit batteries, even worse cameras, and have pretty bad build quality. Also of note, their warranty support isn't well regarded.
>>
>>51809573
Asus subsidizes their phones by preinstalling tons of bloatware. Zenfone 2 for example has CleanMaster apps built into the ROM. Do not recommend.

>>51808718
Pretty much every app that has push notifications uses Google Play Services. Its probably an app abusing notifications like Facebook or Snapchat or an IM app, not the fault of G.P.S. itself. You could flash a ROM and not install gapps, but you would be limited in what you can install since so many apps require GP Services.

I live in Southern Ontario Canada, currently with Rogers using an iPhone 5s

>>51808181
all of this is too true

Anyways I'm looking to get an android but the pickings at Rogers are slim when it comes to more budget friendly phones, I'm basically looking at an Xperia Z3 and a Motorola X Play

Any other options I should be considering?
>>
>>51809068
Agreed. Its a bit annoying on how fixated on thinness Sony is. Personally I would have preferred it if they made the edges around the screen thinner and the phone a little thicker as a 0.7 screen to front ration is just not as good as that of many of their competitors (Samsung and LG etc going over 0.8 on some of their models)

The same apps you use on any other Android phone. I would unlock the bootloader straight away so you can do things to it later without having to wipe the device. Root and install Adaway. Get Nova Launcher Prime especially if it's still on sale for ridiculously cheap.

For what it's worth, I'm a happy 1+1 user, never plan on getting another phone.

Also, the Huawei phones never have custom ROMs to my knowledge and they run a skinned version of Android. Meanwhile the OPO comes with the best ROM out there and you have basically every ROM under the sun to choose from.

Note 5 owner here, the camera is the same in the S6/S6 edge/S6 edge+/note5.

The difference is the Note5 and s6 edge+ have more advanced software stabilization that I think MAY come to the S6 and S6 edge in the 6.0 but i dont remember.
>>
>>51811115

I'm kinda liking the screen on edge plus, is Note 5 better in performance?
>>
>>51811191
The note5 and Edge+ are neck and neck. the edge+ has to run the extra apps associated with the edge [s] meme [/s] screen. The note5 has to run the associated apps with the spen. Overall the edge+ runs slightly better because there really aren't that many things the edge screen does besides the quick widgets and a clock. The spen features on the other hand are rather extensive (they have had 5 generations to work on spen features afterall) so the note5 runs a slight bit worse in benchmarks, but in use they feel the same. I owned the edge+ for a week before returning it for the note5 because I realized I would never use the edge screen and it just made it super awkward to hold for me personally (maybe you're different). So I liked the edge+ fine, I just really prefer the note5. The spen is fantastic for gaming and drawing or taking notes. Or if you have to sign PDFs often for your job, you can fill out a PDF form with the spen, add your signature, etc. and email it back all from your phone.

So in the end both phones perform about the same, I just personally prefer the note5, you may prefer the edge+.
>>
>>51810093
>>51810129
I would consider the OnePlus X ($329, requires an invite until later this month). It's really cheap with good build quality, and works on Rogers. One caveat is that it doesn't support band 17 (700MHz), so if you're in a big city you might have issues getting LTE inside buildings. Also if you have to make a warranty claim, OnePlus has a reputation for being pretty bad.

If you can increase your budget, I highly recommend a Nexus phone. Supports all the LTE bands, and has the benefit of getting Android updates before anyone else, and guaranteed updates for two years. Google is very good with warranty related claims. 5X is only available from the Google Store ($499/559 for 16/32GB), while the 6P is available from Rogers ($199 for 32GB on 2 year contract) or from the Google Store ($699/749/849 for 32/64/128GB).

Staying within your budget, the Z3 isn't bad, although I would prefer the Z3 Compact (not available on contract at Rogers, but available in different colours for $514+shipping/taxes at Expansys.ca). The compact has a smaller size and only a 720p screen, but gets amazing battery life. The regular Z3 is pretty decent with battery, but not as good as the Compact.

The X Play has a slower 600 series Snapdragon in it, so performance isn't that great. Battery life on the X Play is apparently very good though. However, I wouldn't buy a Motorola phone now that they're owned by Lenovo, especially from a carrier.

If I were you I'd go with the OPX. Only issue is that missing band which probably won't make that big of difference for you unless you're in a big city and spend a lot of time in office buildings. Then again Rogers is pretty quiet on where they have 700MHz deployed, so it could be more widespread than I realize. They've only confirmed Calgary, Vancouver, and Toronto but have said they've been doing more deployments in BC.
>>
>>51811308

Note 5 is great too but I just liked the screen on edge+ more for some reason, the extended sides gives me a weird feeling.
>>
>>51811496
It makes watching full screen videos awkward.
>>
>>51811308
>>51811496
Personally for me, I'm having trouble choosing between the Note 5 and the Edge Plus. As a visual person, I am really liking the design on the Edge Plus and yet I like the functionality that the S-Pen has over the Edge Plus's curved screen.

Can't have it all I guess, but then you have to wonder why didn't Samsung make a Samsung Galaxy Note 2?
>>
>>51811655
*Whoops, I meant Note 2 Edge.

Also I didn't mention this in my first post but while I like the Edge phones' design in general, I have some concerns on how video watching/game playing will look on the curved screen, plus I've been hearing a few things about how sometimes the glare on the curve can get in the way?

You could wait a month or two for the S7, gonna likely be announced at CES 2016.
>>

>I have some concerns on how video watching/game playing will look on the curved screen, plus
If you plan on getting the gearVR apparently the edge+ just makes it a bit weird on one side and distorts colors and such and really can distract from the immersion.

The note5 is by far the better of the two for content, gaming, movies, VR etc.

I like Ice but it's in a case anyways, so you really only see the fingerprint scanner. My case is Emerald coloured.

I didn't get Nexus protect because it wasn't available in my country at the time of my purchase. I figure if something happens to the phone I'll just buy a replacement or a OPX. It's already half the price of the phone for the enrollment + deductible, so might as well just save for a whole new phone not a refurbished one.

Sony z2, z3 or z3 compact run close to stock android if that is what you prefer. Be beware of overheating on the 3rd gen models though, which may be a problem if you want to do a lot of gaming on them. Still great phones in their price range. Also have a look at the LG G4, although it is much larger at 5.5 inches. Great value for the money though

note5 is the most powerful android phone right now and as long as you are okay with no removable battery and no mSD card slot, it's a solid device. It's probably the best out of box stock android experience I have ever had.

>>

Why? Stock 5.1 is fine and is as way more battery optimised than any cm or aosp rom.

If you really wanna use cm look at getting greenify and amplify
>>
>>51812982
The camera isn't shit
It's at least top 5
Its not the best but its not horseshit like the z3c

And it doesn't overheat, the 810 has been throttled hard enough and all the heat pipes and thermal paste make up for anything else.
The battery life is still just as good.

Also the plastic frame is really good, its not as good as the steel one but has a premium like feel of gloss and quality only matched by Nokia.
>>
Guys I'm due an upgrade, I'm in the UK and I'm entirely unsure what to get.

I quite liked the look of the 6P but seeing one irl I think it's a bit too big for my tastes.

Quite liked the look of the Galaxy S6 and Sony Z5. But the Sony UI and the Galaxy's shit RAM management put me off them.

Was also looking at an iPhone but I don't think I'd like them, don't particularly like the one button thing.

Other option was the LG G4.

I seriously don't know what to get. I mainly use my phone for watching shit, browsing the internet and sometimes map navigation. So a good screen, battery and the ability to not have to reload web pages are what's most important. Anyone know what would do me the best? Don't really give a shit about games.
>>
>>51813345
If it ain't broke. Don't fix it.

An the Sony mobile division is arguably sonys least shit division when it comes to software mainly because half of them is in Sweden.

Also half the reason why their camera processing software sucks ass.
>>
>>51814118
I don't understand your point. Unless you're taking about the xperia ui during kitkat which actually was shit, its wring because the sony ui after lollipop is arguably the least skinned out of the lg and Samsung, only obviously beaten by the nexus.

The z5 also has the best battery life out of the four
>>
>>51814162
Just personal preference I guess, I didn't like it, also sounds like Sony Mobile are going down the tubes but I could be wrong.

The one thing I miss the Z5 not having is wireless charging, in work being able to just slam my phone down on a little pad would be nice, which I think the LG and Samsung can do.
>>
LG G Flex 2 vs LG G3

>but it can't even fucking hold an app without reloading even though it has 4gb of lpddr4 vs 2gb of lpddr2 of the nex4.
the note5 consistently can hold 6-8 apps before having to reload. The S6 is the problem phone in that it can only hold 3-4 apps before reloading.

Sure the nexus 4 can have 10+ before reloading, but who the fuck needs more than 4 or 5 at a time?

The note5 being able to do 7+ is more than enough for all but the heaviest of mutlitaskers.

I have had the note5 since launch and can count on one hand the number of times it's had to reload apps.

CyanogenMod have become fucking Microsoft shills. I actually like Cortana on Android, I downloaded it earlier and it's pretty solid. Still this is pushing it.

I'm very late with the response, but for other people thinking about the Z5 and wondering about the camera, here you go.

The problem with the Z5 camera isn't in the hardware. The hardware is really damn good, which is proven by the fact that most of the smartphone flagships (including the Iphone) use Sony camera modules.
The problem is with the software and image processing algorithms that Sony uses. They are garbage. For a start, the noise reduction algorithms are incredibly aggressive and blur out all the detail in a photo. You can notice this if you start to zoom in on full size pictures that the Z5 has taken. Even in great natural lighting the details are blurry and messy due to the image processing.
The second problem seems to be with the autofocus. Even if it's really fast (allegedly something like 0.6 seconds), it consistently seems to focus wrong.
The camera also overexposes pictures quite a lot.

All of these problems have been present since the original Xperia Z (I own one right now, it has the exact same problems) and I don't understand why Sony don't fix them, because their cameras really struggle due to the image processing.

TL;DR Hardware is fantastic but the software side with the image processing fucks a great camera up. Thanks Sony.

Thinking of flashing gapps again after going without it for a few months.

What do? Should I do it or not?

Have fun with your new brick

Replacing my dying 2 year old LG G2 that has a 5th of the screen just not working.

My only options appear to be
>s6/edge line
>Note 5
>G4
>iShill

So, what do I go for?
>>
>>51818348
Damn. Guess I'll just hold out for the SD 820 devices then.
>>
>>51818446
What? My phone is getting up to date with cm13 nightly just haven't been flashing gapps is all.

Does anyone else think Smartphones have become a massive scam?

I'm not denying their incredible amount of power to size ratio, but come on. A new contract every two years? Thousands of dollars spent on plans every two years?

Everyone always seems to have the latest and greatest iPhone on an incredibly expensive plan.

Anyone here rocking an old Android phone on a prepaid plan or something similar?
>>
>>51818689
Well my phone isnt old but its lower specs im on megro pcs dont have many complaints
>>
>>51818707
What?
>>
5X is on sale again. $50 off in the Google store. Is it worth the upgrade form a Nexus 5?
>>
>>51818689
Yes, using ting on a motog, though if you could get an older lycamobile sim, that would be the cheapest sans data.
>>
>>51818770
Is it $50 cheaper worldwide?
>>
>>51818783
I just don't give a fuck about "keeping up with the joneses". I used to buy a new smartphone every year, but realised what a ridiculous waste of money it is.

Not only that, paying for a plan every month is stupid, especially now that I'm not even taking advantage of it, and I'm getting completely ripped off.

$50 total a month for: 4 hours talk time, 512mb of data, and unlimited texting. I don't even use the data anyway but I know I'm getting ripped off hard. I want to realistically pay $50 a year prepaid.
>>
>>51818797
I get it, went from galaxy nexus to a dumbphone then a 1st gen motog. Werks for me since I don't need much.

Not gonna shill for my provider anymore, I'll just say to shop around. Just stay away from the top carriers since those are for fags content paying all that money for their shit.
>>
>>51818797
If you can look into switching to metro pcs i pay that much for unlimited talk and text and 4 gigs of LTE data
>>
>>51818689
Got my Nexus 4 for $200 and I use a $30 prepaid T-Mobile plan. Couldn't imagine paying any more than that for a phone and plan.
>>
>>51818857
What's a Metro PC? I'm feeling out of my depth here.
>>51818859
I miss my Nexus 4. I accidentally smashed the bottom screen and the soft keys didn't work. I really need to quit drinking.
>>
>>51818421
If you do, you should 1. Do a fresh wipe/reset, 2. Use a zip from http://opengapps.org/ preferrably the pico sized one so you have a chance to clean up the botnet before it activates. Also, use Amplify and disable some shit with System Tuner to reduce it's effect.
>>
>>51817933
What about a 3rd party camera app like the Google one or something else? Are these shitty algorithms deep on a phone level or are they on an app level?
I don't know enough about phones to know if that's a retarded question or not.

Also, does the Z5 still have magic self-breaking glass still? The reviews on the website I want to buy it from are spotted with reports of that shit.
>>
LG g4 for $338? yes or no?
>>
>>51819459
Also what bloatware is on the LG G4?
>>
>tries snapchat after not using it for more than 6 months
>doesn't work on rooted phones
WHAT THE FUCK
>>
>>51819287
Yeah will be doing a nightly flash soon, and was aware of that project.

Thanks for info
>>
>>51819509
LG bloat is QuickMemo+, Smartworld, Voice mate, voice recorder, quick remote, LG Backup & LG Health. Then you have to add in any carrier bloat.
>>
>>51819595
will installing a custom rom fuck up the camera app/quality?
>>
>>51810902
Thanks. I`m also very relient on wi-fi. from what I`ve seen the P8 doesn`t have ac, only the OPO.
Also, the batttery is a little smaler (2600 ish) and OPO`s is of 3100... would both of them be able to deliver a day of constant internet surfing?
>>
>>51819669
Of course it will.
>>
>>51819440
As far as I know, the glass doesn't break spontaneously. I've only read about a scratch on one review and it was because a guy dropped it.

As far as 3rd party camera apps, no, they don't solve the problem. It's embedded within the phone, which also means t hat if you try to unlock the phone completely to get complete access (by unlocking the bootloader or something, I dunno what you call it) it will mess up the camera processing and make it even worse.

All Sony has to do is to get in touch with their camera department and ask them to write a proper software set for the camera and it's 10/10. Why they mess the software up like this, I don't know, maybe they feel like their smartphones would intrude too much on their camera sales or something, you never know with Japanese people.

I want to finish this off by saying, the camera isn't bad. It's actually pretty good. However, it could be so much better if the software side was fixed. I heard rumors that they will fix it in Android Marshmallow, but we'll see. I also imagine that if you stop using the "Superior Auto" camera mode and instead use manual that you will get better shots as it won't downsample everything to an 8mp picture. ANd it would also allow you to tweak the settings.

I'm going to get one for christmas and then go and try to take some pictures with it and try to find out exactly how messed up the processing is. My expectations are low, but it might be salvaged later on.

Is there anything better than the LG V10 right now? It looks really fucking good

>2TB size support
holy shit that's overkill, I love it.
>>
Whats the absolute best battery life phone thats smaller than 4,9"

Not being laggy is a nice plus
Looking good is also important

What does /g/ think about Vodafone Smart Ultra 6?

http://www.gsmarena.com/vodafone_smart_ultra_6-7313.php

5.5" FHD, Snapdragon 615, 2GB RAM, 13Mpx/5Mpx, LTE, NFC, GPS (with GLONASS), basically stock Android, microSD.
All that for $200. I'm seriously tempted to switch from my Lumia 630 since the GPS on it sucks balls. The only think I'm worried about is the size (going from 4.5" to 5.5") and the lack of gyroscope means no Google Cardboard fun. But then again... 200 dollars, so I guess I shouldn't really complain.
>>
>>51818770
Well you'll be getting a much better camera, refreshed software support, moderately better battery life, a fingerprint sensor, and better band support.
If you think that's worth dropping $300+ then go for it.
>>
>>51820538
Z3/5c
>>51819865
Blame Sony for employing Swedes that can't write proper camera processing software and not giving camera2 api or raw support for someone else to do it properly
>>
Gonna sit on my Nexus 6 for the foreseeable future. Shit just works

I just installed Cyanogenmod on my Nexus 5. How do I install Google Play Store? I got an APK but it just crashes when I try to open it.

I'm on CyanogenMod 12.1 and Android 5.1.1

>>51821825
you have to flash applicable gapps.

use opengapps.org

I replaced my G2 with a Note5 and couldnt be happier, out of box android is so much better on the Note5, and I though the G2 was plenty quick, but the Note5 leaves it in the dust.

I have a iPhone 5s that struggles to hold a days worth of charge, thinking about upgrading. What should I get? Any reason why I shouldn't just trade the 5s in to apple and get a 6s plus?

First full charge on my new Droid turbo 2. I did a lot of browsing and downloading in both wifi and cellular. It's pretty good. I played asphalt 8 just to check if the sd810 overheating meme was true or not, and my phone didn't get hot at all. 10/10

HiSense is one of those monster big chink companies that just this decade started selling shit outside of China, though the phone business looks pretty new
>>
>>51819707
I got 7-8 hrs screen on time in CM11
In CM 12.1 it's closer to 6.5 hours screen on time, but here's hoping that CM13 official comes soon because the battery life is apparently awesome on the nightlies.

>>Why the fuck does the Z5 have a shitty camera? Weren't sites touting it as having the best lense in a phone this year?
>Don't they fucking make the lenses for iphones too? How the fuck does a company make better pictures then the company that makes the hardware?
They make the sensors, like literally for every company in the world, they make the best ones too, and they keep their best lines for themselves
There's a few other companies making sensors but none have the dominance Sony has
