I wouldn't. I would spend an absolute MAXIMUM of 1k on a desktop, and the rest on something useful.
Almost nothing I do can't be handled by a moderately priced laptop. For big computation it's cheaper, and faster, to spin up 32/36/40 core VMs on amazon for a few hours & turn them off when you're done. Added benefit that you won't be stuck with outdated equipment in a few years.
$1000 buys an impressively overpowered desktop.
