PowerPC. I love my RS/6000s.

MIPS is my favorite ISA. It's very simple. I can actually program MIPS assembly.

I don't know anything about microarchitecture, so I can't speak to that.

Mips instruction set is easy

SPARC, because it's an inexpensive and reasonably well-performing way to introduce yourself to the realm of computing outside of x86 and ARM, while still being widely supported by current software.

The hardware they're found in also looks very nice.

What's a nice SPARC machine to play around with that I can get for 200 bucks? Servers or workstations?
>>
>>51777413
Is that a Tadpole notebook with a SPARC inside?

Any Sun Blade (100/1000/150/1500/2500) you can probably get in that price range if you want a workstation, or an Ultra 2/30/60 if you're more into beige box era systems. There's a nice U60 creator 3D listed on eBay for $175 BIN right now.

If you're looking at servers, you can probably score UltraSPARC T1-based Sun Fires for next to nothing with dual processors and 16-32GB of DDR2.

I personally run a Fire V100, basically a Blade 150 without the onboard PGX64 graphics and expansion slots shoved into a rackmount case, eats next to no power and fits nicely in my desk. I'm also kitting out a SPARCstation 2 and an Ultra 5.

What is this widely available software you speak of?

Other than the OS itself.
>>
>>51777413
anything that isn't von neuman.

Solaris as one of the bigger unices, especially in workstations, has/had a pretty big community of developers supporting and maintaining the software base. Services like OpenCSW provide free and (mostly) up to date packages, and there are tons of FTPs out there with applications and packages for what you can't find in their repository.

If you're looking for more popular free software that for some reason isn't available in package/binary form on the web, chances are you'll find a guide on compiling it from source.

Pretty sure there also was a reasonably massive proprietary software base (as far as unices go), I wish there were some lists out there so I could get searching/archiving.

DEC Alpha. Fastest RISC machines available at the time.
Sadly swallowed by Intel and "obsoleted" by Itanium.

Isn't there a new mips processor that can execute x86 instructions?

Avoid the Sun Fire T1000 - It is loud. I really like how they look, and the price is well worth it. But I'm not talking 'Oh that NAS under the desk is loud'. I'm talking 80dB a-rack-of-these-requires-ear-protection loud. Fan control doesn't exist on most models, and when it does it's managed through a service that only exists on Solaris.

It also lacks USB, CD and VGA. So you need to boot it over the network. Which isn't configured by default so you'll have to find a roll-over cable and serial-to-usb adapter. On the other hand its out-of-band management interface is spectacular. Compared to the shitty DRAC IPMI interface you get from Dell when you don't pay for an enterprise license, it is a godsend.

Here's a video.

the apple s1 is pretty amazing. I don't know how they even got it to be waterproof. My friend said something about 'sealing it with epoxy' or whatever but idk what that means.

God damn though those things are fucking cheap, I almost want to replace my V100 with one now even despite the loudness, as long as it can withstand a couple hours in the hotbox I'm running the V100 in right now I don't think I'd mind.

go be a dense IT scrub during normal business hours. nobody really thinks that anything apple makes is worth considering for any real purposes
