Do not destroy your disk if you get raided. That is illegal.

Use full disk encryption. Either Truecrypt for Windows (not secure, please use Linux) or dm-crypt on Linux. (Just install Ubuntu. You have the option to do full-disk encryption automatically in the install.) Use a long passPHRASE.
