/g/ I need help with symbolic links

I'm trying to make it so that my default "Pictures" folder in Windows is actually stored in my External drive. This is the command I've tried

mklink /J C:\Users\MyUsername\Pictures D:\MyFolder

And the error I get is that it cannot create a file when that file already exists. To me that suggests Windows can't link already existing folders and therefore it wouldn't be possible to link my Pictures folder to an external drive, but the thing is that's how my setup was before and then did a factory reset

Plz help

I want to buy some new speakers, now ibood has a deal on Denon SC-M39 speakers. No idea if they are any good or not though.
Can anyone give me suggestions? Maybe on decent but fairly priced speakers.
I already have an amp and a sub-woofer.

You dont have to force this via commands, Windows actually has this functionality built in. Right click the pictures folder and go to properties, Location tab. This works for all of the media folders in windows, like Music, videos, documents, etc

Guys Im sick of Patel giving advice on every form and comment section on the internet if you can please send help.

So I have this USB Kingston Data Traveler 2.0 8GB.
It can not be formatted via MyComputer,Disk management shows it as disk 1 but no options for it and changing the drive letter does nothing,check disk says Cannot open volume for direct access.
Formatting tool from kingston says format fail.
Is there any chance of getting this thing to work because it is detectable if you right click > open as portable device
but if you try to copy something in it,I get a message saying the device has been unplugged.
>>
>>51759328
Holy shit what the hell.
Literally never knew this, that's stupidly useful. Feel a bit stupid that I had it all set up as a symbolic link now. Thanks man, that's pretty damn great.
Will files I save into C:/...Pictures automatically go into the folder on D:/ ?

Is there a way to upgrade it to the 64 bit without unplugging anyhing and keeping windows on my SSD? or do I have to completely reinstall? I really dont want to partition my HDD again
>>
>>51759408
been there,reinstall is the only way.
>>
>>51759389
Yeah, it basically uses the same symbolic link system to acheive it. Sometimes, old programs with shitty coding will create a folder in the original location (C:\Users\), but 99% of programs take the hint and take the link correctly.
>>
>>51759389
it's not going to be on C if you changed the location to D.

right click the folder and check the path to be sure where it's going to be saved.

How can a mobile game server tell if you're using a modded .apk?
>>
I gots what is probably a stupid question, but why do so many linux distros insist on shipping with full office suites instead of just a word processor like abiword? a word processor is all most folks need and those who do do intensive office stuff are most likely using windows
>>

it may have a sort of checksum that it tells the server. So it knows if the game files have changed.

Hi /g/

I want to install Linux Mint on my PC.
I have an AMDGPU enabled R9 380.

My question is how do I go about getting the Ubuntu LTS based Mint distro to boot so I can upgrade to the 4.2 kernel or later?

RAM: 16GB

So I spilled a glass of water and some of it spilled over the desk and into the top vent of my PC. There was about 5 seconds between the spill and me powering off the PC and unplugging everything and there didn't seem to be any visual fuck ups from my monitor before everything was powered down.

I read a few things online and disassembled my PC and put all the parts in the warmest room in the house. It has been about 23 hours but I'll wait another 30 hours until I put everything back together.

Anyway, what I wanted to ask if I see any noticeable water residue on my motherboard how should I go about cleaning it of? I'm told I need 90% or 95% alcohol for cleaning but I'm not quite sure how to go about it.

I get that, firefox is full of memory leaks and bad programming practises. CPU/memory usage often will suddenly increase without any reason
>>
All fans start up and HDD spins, mobo shows red "AA", no signal to monitor.
This is the case after having suffered from spontaneous cases of video signal suddenly being lost and abnormal fan behaviour, requiring reboots.

Is it most likely the graphics card? Possibly contact issue? I probed the card a bit when the machine was "running" and this caused acute change in fan speed.
Tried reapplying card, didn't fix it. PCI-E itself possibly too loose?

If I'm upgrading from an AMD 6970 but don't really play games any more, what would be a very cost-effective graphics card right now?
Just something cheap and quiet (!) and noticeably faster than the 6970, which should be easy after all these years.

Ok, /sqt/, I am having this issue with my old PC.

PC boots, I hear one beep, fans are spinning but it doesn't show anything on the monitor. It has managed to show an error message on it and boot into Windows once, but I haven't had much luck since.

This is the error message. I know for a fact video card/monitor/RAM modules are fine because I have tried them on another PC. Is my CMOS battery dead? Or could it be something else?

I always distro hopped and never stayed somewhere for a longer time than 3 months
I am now fairly knowledgeable and run arch
but I got noobish problem because of my distro hopping

I have no idea how distros like Ubuntu, Mint, openSUSE, Fedora,... how do they deal when new version comes out and old one is installed.

Lets say you have ubuntu 15.04 and 15.10 came out,
hows your experience of that? Does ubuntu tells you theres big update?
Is kernel switched seemingly? Is it all under the hood?
Or does it not even bother without extensive user deliberate seeking out of the upgrade?

similarly Mint 17.2 and newly released 17.3.. how do they go about it?

Another thing, does kernel get updated outside of the version jumps?
if I am on 15.04 I am on that one kernel that came with it until I update the version? or it gets updated as any other package inside the system..

--- PARANOIA ---

Hey guys, I'm admittedly new to doing/making technology, but I'm wondering what I can do to keep my internet activity from being tracked. I didn't want to start a whole thread for this. I'm a very paranoid person and this thought bothers me every day. Of course, I've deleted facebook / google accounts, as well as disabling the telemetry updates in my Win7. I just don't know what my ISP could be tracking and stuff. Please have mercy on a pitiful fucking noob and just throw a couple of words out there that I can research.

What do I need to do to quell my paranoia about being tracked? P-private server? VPN? I honestly have no fucking idea what these are, but if you could just throw me a couple of words, I'd really appreciate it.

There is a folder on my external hard drive that I made 'shared' in order to be able to be accessed by my WD TV and other PC's on my wifi network.

My desktop where I set those permissions is now bricked and It does not boot.

I've connected my external HD to my laptop but the folder where I set those permissions does not allow me to delete or edit anything on it because I guess it is still requiring permissions from my desktop.

How can I remove those permissions? I'm unable to do it from my laptop.

Would there be a way to use linux to remove those permissions? So I can edit/delete files from that folder? I can edit/delete anywhere else outside just not in that specific folder.

Please help!

Either they use a single word for the passphrase or you end up spending weeks just to break it. Most people don't have the patience to boot into kali and leave it running on their shitty laptop for 3 months while it bruteforces it.

HP is still shit. I've worked at 3 different pc repari shops and the top laptop brand to give problems is HP, oh and one of those stores was in a different state.

HP is almost like apple where the users knowledge of the company comes from advertisements.

HP sucks.

you're forgetting to also correlate market share with how many problem pc you see if that brand, having more pcs on the market will of course result in more of your brand needing fixing, since most folk are morans when it comes to computers who throw a hissy fit if you want to install adblock for them even though they have a data cap

So I'm trying to overwrite text in a .txt file with a button event action using a TreeItem<String> value, but I keep getting "UnknownFormatConversionException conversion= ' / ' " at the top of the stack.

Since I'm using Windows, I thought the problem might be with the file path syntax using "\\" as opposed to "/", so I tried using .replace() to see if that would solve the problem, but I'm still getting an "UnknownFormatConversionException conversion='/' ".

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, and debugging doesn't yield any hints to what the problem could be. Anyone know how I might be able to get this done without getting any exception errors? (Below are the methods I've been using, I originally wanted to use them with a Listener)
import java.io.FileWriter;
import java.io.PrintWriter;
import java.io.IOException;

public class WriteFile {

private String path="C:\\Users\\dude\\Desktop\\test.txt";
private String where=path.replace("\\","/");
private boolean append_to_file=false;

public WriteFile(String where){
path=where;
}
public WriteFile(String where,boolean append_value){
path=where;
append_to_file=append_value;
}
public void writeToFile(String textLine) throws IOException{
FileWriter write = new FileWriter(path,append_to_file);
PrintWriter print_line= new PrintWriter(write);
print_line.printf("%/s","%/n",textLine);
print_line.close();

I'm having an issue with windows 7's USB system,
I have a samson Meteor USB microphone plugged into a usb 2.0 port, windows began to lag and explorer.exe pretty much froze everything for a second then gives me a pop up telling me that the speed of the device could be improved by moving it to a usb 2.0 port.

here's the thing all my ports are usb 2.0 or 3.0, so I decide my options are switch it to another 2.0 port, this ones front panel, same issue after about 40 minutes of use.
I try a usb 3.0 port, same exact issue.

The problem isn't that the device doesn't work it work's perfectly, only everytime it disconects it causes this lag and then resets all of the audio levels forcing me to reset them and relaunch any programs using the microphone

My question is how do I fix this and

tl;dr can I disable windows 7's usb optimization feature for usb 2.0

My motherboard can handle RAM clock speeds up to 2000 MHz. When I set it to [AUTO] it sets itself at 1600 MHz. Is there any real reason NOT to force 2000 MHz?

My motherboard is an ASUS Crosshair IV Formula from ~2009 and my CPU is an AMD Athlon II X4 620 (also from ~2009), and my RAM is Corsair Vengeance 2x8GB @ max 2400 MHz (motherboard can only achieve 2000 MHz tho, as mentioned).

Any reason at all not to crank my RAM up to 2000 MHz? The motherboard was built with overclocking in mind anyway.

The project managers decide what goes in and what doesn't.
Github is based around forking, meaning your copy the original code as your own then usually modify it, afterwords you can request to merge your forked code into the original project, that's where the project managers review your changes and decide if it is what they want, github visually shows all the differences and changes in the code.
I don't know how they coordinate it though, possibly an external contact like an irc or using github's internal issue's / suggestion section.

can I just get a sanity check with regard to power consumption?

first build, it's a poorfag server box and I already have three HDDs from my last home server. I have no idea what the proper power requirements are and the different sources I consulted vary from pic related to 279 W.
this is the build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/zMJx8d
plus three 7200 RPM SATA internals, also two or three USB 3 external drives, a USB soundcard, and probably some other things.
Is 300W enough? overkill? way too little?
>>
>>51762947
Power supplies work most efficiently around 50% load, you're better off getting some breathing room an get a power supply with at least 25% more wattage than planned peak load.

(CPU TDP + GPU TDP) *1.25

+5 x # of Fans
+15 x # of HDDs

so if the power supply has a fan and the case has a fan and the CPU has a fan, that counts for three?
does a USB hard drive that is not independently powered count as a hard drive, and one that is independently powered not count?

>>
>>51763277
Correct, but a 2.5" external hard drive powered off USB will be more like 5 watts
These are intentionally inflated values to reflect peak loads when the fans and HDDs first spin up
Normal power usage of a fan is closer to 2 watts and 10 watts for a 3.5" HDD.

Why would I have sudden loss of performance in games? Example: watch dogs. I used to be able to play on ultra, easy, but now I need to put it at minimum. I'm not when the change occurred as I hadn't had time to play for a while, but yesterday I moved my components to a new case and installed another hard drive.

Alright folks I am having a hell of a time figuring out what is wrong with my internet
>Have DSL through Verizon
>When playing games that require a constant connection (Like Online Shooters or MMOs) the game will randomly freeze for a few seconds and then go back to normal
>Happens fairly consistently
>Happens on PS4/PC/Phone
>Replaced Router and Modem
>Replaced all Ethernet cords
>Had Verizon come out and test the line
>Checked DSL filters on phones
>Ran AVG and MalwareBytes on all systems connecting to the WiFi

Does anyone have any fucking idea what it could be, or how I could try and diagnose this? It is driving me fucking mad. I occasionally have to remote login to work from home and this issue is making it a bitch.

Any idea what's wrong with my PC?

Every now and then my USB peripherals (Mouse and Keyboard is all I really have) disconnect then my computer freezes(clock stops for example), and a few seconds later, if there's any audio playing the speakers buzz. A forced restart via button on my case clears things up. I suspect it's not a software issue because this issue has been consistent through at least 2 Windows installations. It seems to happen randomly too, sometimes it could be twice a day then not happen for a week or 2. It also doens't seem to matter what the PC is doing at the time. This has happened durinmg gameplay, youtube playback, web browsing, sitting idle overnight. I should also mention that temperatures are all stable.

Any idea what it could be? I'd like to treat myself to a new case, and migrate my components to this new case/ have something nice and new, but I'm not amazing with PC hardware, so I'd like to get any hardware replacements done at the same time so I don't have to do PC surgery more than necessary.

Speccy related if that's relevant.

I just bought an Asus z97-a mobo with usb 3.1 and it can not connect to the internet through my ethernet cable. Cable definitely 100% works, I was using it earlier today before installing the new mobo. I called Asus tech support and they just told me to "download the drivers" and linked me a page to every single driver, with no further direction.

I know /g/ isn't supposed to be straight up tech support, but none of these drivers seem to be helping. So far I've installed the Chipset driver and the LAN driver, which just installed some useless program called Turbo LAN which doesn't seem to be doing anything. This is driving me nuts.

The UnknownFormatConversionException is probably coming from print_line.printf. WTF is that even supposed to do?

Do some reading on java.nio.file.Path. Doing your own path conversions is asking for pain. Consider the following.
import java.io.FileWriter;
import java.io.PrintWriter;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.nio.file.Path;
import java.nio.file.Paths;

public class WriteFile
{
private Path destinationPath;
private boolean append;

public WriteFile(String path)
{
this.destinationPath = Paths.get(path);
}

public WriteFile(String path, boolean append)
{
this.destinationPath = Paths.get(path);
this.append = append;
}

public void WriteToFile(String content)
throws IOException
{
FileWriter writer = new FileWriter(this.destinationPath.toString(), this.append);
PrintWriter printer = new PrintWriter(writer);

printer.println(content);

printer.close();
writer.close();
}

public static void main(String[] args)
{
WriteFile wf = new WriteFile(Paths.get(System.getProperty("user.home"), "test.txt").toString());

try
{
wf.WriteToFile("WTF");
}
catch(IOException exc)
{
System.out.println("IOException thrown");

So, question I've been having for a long time:

Where are file systems stored, specifically, the file/folder indexes? Is it usually at the start of the drive? End of the drive? How does the filesystem handle it's own files?

Are file properties stored as well as the file's physical location? Separate files?

If I've got to be specific on which filesystem, how about the good old FAT32, or NTFS.

Probably defective RAM or GPU. Search Google for "Memtest86" and run it on your computer overnight, this will test your RAM for any defects. Make sure to read the instructions and information on the Memtest website first so you know what you're doing. As for a defective GPU, just take it out and run on-board graphics for a day or two. If all is good, put the GPU back in and see if the problem continues. If it appears to be the GPU that's the problem, try reinstalling the drivers before getting a replacement. GL, I spent 1-2 years replacing parts in my PC before everything worked fine xD P.S nice CPU, I have the same. That's the only component I haven't changed ;P

Well they scan? While they are running they basically spy on you to see if there is anything irregular or out of norm going on.

They have a database of virus's/malware etc they have encountered before and so they use that as an index to detect those viruses on your PC.

I don't know what else to tell you, hope that is satisfying.
