1.) heat up the joint first, touch solder to the joint not the tip of the iron.
2.) practice.

solder things.

then solder more things.

then solder even more things.

when you think you can't solder any more, solder more things.

Use leaded solder and rosin. Shits easy to work with. Dont fall for the lead free meme. On amazon you can buy a big block of violin rosin for 3$ that works great for soldering

For n00bs I recommend the classic round tip. Avoid thin tip and the "scredriver" tips. They are complete and utter shit outside some very limited specialty use. Also, DO NOT get a soldering station. Waste of money. Get a hand iron. And DO NOT listen to the Hakko and Weller shills. They are all fucked in the head thinking it's the tool that does the soldering not the hand. What else... what was mentioned by anon: get leaded solder while you can. The environmental people are trying to ban it, but it's shitloads easier to solder with that lead-free. One good roll of semi-thick should cover you for ages. Thin is good for SMD work, but shit for anything large like wire etc. Also: rosin core solder is nice if you don't want to flood everything with flux. And as a n00b you will feel compelled to do that all the time. Speaking of flux, get a pen type water soluble one. And get some solder wick too. You're gonna need that as a n00b.
