Here's something I don't get: I hear that assembly code only works for the computer it's explicitly programmed for, or at least it only runs super efficiently for that computer.
So why did RCT2, a game programmed in assembly, run super efficiently on any Windows machine?

>>
>>51689149
"super efficiently" is a meme, rct2 is simple and would run just as fast if it was written in the most bloated java.

different cpus offer different features on top of the x86/_64 instruction sets which targetted compiling can take advantage of.

RCT2 would probably run just as fast in bloated java today, yes, but on the computers it was made for it's a miracle of coding that it ran so well.

But thanks for explaining why one piece of assembly can work for any x86/_64 processor. What sort of features would these be though, and is it realistic to write the code to take advantage of a selection of processor features if those features exist, but still run if those features don't exist?
I'm wondering if it's worth learning assembly even if I'm not trying to optimise a supercomputer.

Any idea why this does work with new versions of ffmpeg? I recently tried a new build of ffmpeg and it's crashing when I'm using more than 2 threads or the -vf option. I have an older version that works just fine.

Their schedule's busy what with other jobs. God willing they can spare time on Sunday. One of them actually showed up in the morning but unless my brother brings the rig to their place, not much can be done. Again, we're both crossing our fingers on Sunday. Just hope we don't have to get a new GPU. The one on hand was pretty expensive.

I would like to assume the motherboard has onboard graphics but the ports are provided by the GPU. From what I've been told, the motherboard has no such port to connect to the monitor. Could be mistaken. Never got a good look at the motherboard (what with it being hooked into the case). Furthermore, the fans for everything at least turn on so according to that flowchart, it definitely isn't a power issue.

Finally, here's the specs.

I saw on a forum that running >sudo dnf --releasever=22 downgrade xorg-x11-server-xorg --alowerasing might fix the issue. Has anyone else tried this? Should I wait around for the fix for Fed23 or just find and download an .iso for Fed22?

I use to use a simple instructable to make my computer think it's genuine by editing the registry. Now I can't. I use to goto CMD and do
W7 Genuine

CMD => SLMGR -REARM if it is not working then CMD => SLMGR /REARM

If you are facing any error then follow the below steps

Press “Windows + R” you will see Run dialog. Or Go to Start, click Run.
Type “Regedit”. Click Ok. You will see Registry editor window.
Click on Arrow mark which is left to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE”.
Click on arrow mark which is left to “SOFTWARE”.
Click on arrow mark which is left to “Microsoft”.
Click on arrow mark which is left to “Windows NT”.
Click on arrow mark which is left to “CurrentVersion”.
Now click on the word “SoftwareProtectionPlatform” not on arrow mark.
Right click on “SkipRearm” in the right window.
Click on “Modify”. Change “Value Data” to “1”.
Restart PC.

Use to work

no dice any more and it's still on the bottom of my screen. I can't even get a key to work. So what are my options?

Steam isn't designed around the concept of separate HDDs. You have to download it directly to your main for some dumbass reason. The only other option is to have it directly in your PC as an extra drive and not as a plug in play idea. I tried this and only 2 games worked for me.

Yeah, vim has a lot of nice keybinds and color support. Like, in comparison to something like nano that is.

No one answered this last time, and I don't think it deserves its own thread:

So I want to upgrade my laptop's storage HDD to a larger SSD, how would I go about doing that?

It has an mSATA SSD for the OS and some programs, while my files and most of the other programs are on the HDD. Should I use Clonezilla to clone the drive then restore it after I upgrade? Or should I copy my files to an external, upgrade, then reinstall programs and copy the files back? Other suggestions are welcome.

For some information, I'm currently running Windows 8.1 and I plan to upgrade to Windows 10 as soon as I install the SSD.

Hey /g/,
I'm buying ram and was looking at a 1866MHz kit from Kingston. However, they also have lower frequency kits in the same series for less money. I've heard that all ddr3 ram over 1600MHz is just manufacturer overclocked. Would I be able to overclock a 1600MHz or even 1333MHz kit to 1866 and have the same thing as the more expensive kit but for less?

in manufacture overclocked a bad thing?
>>
>>51694707
No, but they sell it at a higher price. If the manufacturer is using the same hardware throughout a given series they sell (kingston hyperx in this case) and they're just overclocking certain sticks to get more money for them, why couldn't I just do it myself? Is there some reason I can't? I mean, if I was able to something like that wouldn't everyone be doing it? I'm trying not to get jewed.
>>
>>51694776
Normally yes, it is possible. Probable even, but not guaranteed. The higher clocked sticks are most likely higher binned and will have better OC potential, but if youre only stepping it up a little (1600 to 1866 for example), odds are excellent itll do it.

Your limiting factor is voltage required, better sticks require less.
>>
>>51694776
warranty reasons i suppose. maybe the speed on the non-overclocked is locked or maybe these non-overclocked sticks are more susceptible to damage when overclocking somehow, although i highly doubt this is the case.

What's the most easily repairable mouse?

I have had a Razer Deathadder for the past 6-7 years and the middle mouse button shit the bed roughly 5 months ago. Then I switched over to a Func MS2, and less than 4 months into using it the middle mouse button fucks up. So I can't keep buying new mice every 6 months and I need to get a mouse that's easily repairable. I've never soldered anything in my life, but my dad is willing to let me borrow his soldering iron if necessary. Essentially I'm looking for a mouse whose buttons/switches are easily replaceable.. does that even exist?
>>
>>51696498
Rather than getting something easy to repair, why not just get something dirt cheap so you can easily replace it? Seems easier. Hell, you could even buy 2-3 of them and just toss it when it goes bad and pop the new one in.
>>
>>51696452
Well, managed to figure it out myself by fetching my old Preset shortcuts out of an automatic system backup from earlier today, and then changing the path to reflect the new catalyst, worked fine.

Though fuck AMD for making that so backassed to begin with.

I would suggest C first. This way you'll learn the details behind a lot of stuff that with higher level programs would be hidden behind abstraction or otherwise taken for granted, but which I think it is important to be aware of.

Also as far as Python similar to C... well they share a lot of similar constructs, but they're kind of on opposite ends of the spectrum as far as programming languages go. C is a very low level programming language, while Python is a very high level one (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-level_programming_language https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-level_programming_language) C is also a compiled language while Python is an interpreted one, which generally will mean somewhat of a performance overheard and less efficient programs, but much more ease in testing and quickly prototyping things since they don't need to be compiled before you run them.

Yeah I should clarify that C isn't literally a "low level language" in itself, but it's considered lower level than stuff like Python, so not everything in that article will really apply, anyway for your questions:

>What is abstraction?
Kind of hard to explain but basically using a simpler model as a substitute for a more complicated system. Which is a pretty bad explanation... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abstraction_%28computer_science%29 might help
>What does "compiled" mean in a coding sense?
The code needs to be translated into "machine code" before it can be executed on the system. This step means it could take longer to test your code or package it for distribution, but on the other hand you get a neat executable that doesn't require the user have an interpreter installed to read it, and performance is usually much better since the machine code can be executed directly.
>What does "interpreted" mean in a coding sense?
The code is read as-is by an interpreter which does the translation into machine code at runtime. This means it does not have to be compiled beforehand, but the user will need to have the interpreter installed to run it, and performance is usually worse than compiled code.
>>
>>51698202
Oh, just to clarify but in both cases the code needs to be translated into machine code in order to run, but the main difference is that compiled code is translated in its entirety when you compile it (and then the compiled code can be run whenever you like without needing to re-compile), while interpreted code is translated in real-time when you run the code.

>>
>>51698218
So basically:

Compiled = stacked and arranged so it is read more easily

Interpreted = read as it is and converted as it goes along?

In a sense, compiling organises it and turns the code into a package?

And as you said that they both need to be converted to machine code either way, are they converted in the same way? I've heard a compiler (also need recommendations for what programs to use - another question; what programs do i need to use when practicing and learning?) is essential for coding. Is compiled code converted using a compiler while interpreted code is converted using something else?

Again; big thanks for your time and the info. I'm going to find a good forum for this stuff eventually for more advanced questions. Any good sites/forums for learners?
>>
When upgrading to "free" Win10 what version do I get? Any way to get enterprise?
>>
>>51698298
Yeah, pretty much.

You need a compiler or interpreter to code depending on what language you're using, the easiest thing when you're first starting out is to find a prepackaged IDE that will already include all that, and have a lot of features to make your life easier such as being able to quickly compile and test your code directly from your editor window, highlighting errors, auto-completing common functions, stuff like that.

While you can just write code in notepad and then compile manually if you want to, I think this just makes your life needlessly difficult, especially when you're first starting.

Hi /g,

my work laptop is rather slow after booting up, like for a minute after I see the desktop i can't do much - i can move the mouse and let's say press to open Outlook it doesn't open it until everything other in the background is finished. Task Manager doesn't show anything suspicious.

Compiling:
A compiler takes your code and turns it into a sequence of machine instructions which have the form of pic related (depending on the machine). They're a bunch of 1's and 0's which the computer can read and acts them out as they are read.

It has nothing to do with human readability.

How tightly lodged is it in there? You could try holding it on its side and gently prodding it with a pin and see if it falls out (just make sure not to lodge it deeper) or maybe stick a small thing of superglue on the end of a paperclip and attach it to the broken piece, then pull it out after waiting for it to dry (just make damn sure not to accidentally glue it in there by mistake)

As long as you don't go full spaz and dump half a bottle in there and short everything out you shouldn't be able to do much damage beyond what's already there.

Full disclosure: I haven't torrented anything since Limewire was still in its prime. Used to dl music all day errday when I was young and dumb, but I was careless and fucked up my laptop with a couple malicious files, and once got a C&D from Charter, as well.

Since then, I've been super careful about security, and paranoid about getting another C&D, but I'm much better with my PC now. I use it for work mostly (independent animation firm) and, of course, videogaymes, so I really don't know too much about the current pirate culture.

remove ssd, enter bios, reset boot order.
plug in ssd, try to boot, if it doesnt work try resetting bios settings completely.
also see if your SATA is running in IDE mode or something.
update bios.
still doesnt work? return SSD.

btw when you install OS on the SSD, you should ONLY have the SSD connected, otherwise windows install might put some MBR files on the secondary drives.

>>51693314
best solution is to backup documents, pics, videos and such to an external then remove HDD, connect SSD and do a fresh install of the OS and reinstall all programs. After that you can connect the HDD again if you are still going to use that.

I need a barebones Distro because Linux in general is a system that only works out of the box of you picked out every component of your computer from an obscure compatibility list.

Debian, Ubuntu, fedora, mint, openSUSE and a few other distros will literally not install on my system. They all constantly fail to install because of driver related issues and they all require legacy bios to run. Debian and Ubuntu and fedora love to destroy my bios by renaming the hard drive fedora and never letting me touch the drive outside of the installation.

So I need a bare bones Distro that I can install each driver myself from a compatible list.

Also if it's relevant in running 5820k, Evga ftw x99 mobo, ddr4 ram, gtx 980.
