because i won't be able to sit far back enough for my eyes to be comfortable with it.

i suppose there are ways to render games in 16:9 on an ultrawide with black bars, which i'd be happy with, but ultimately it is still 3 times the price of a standard 1440p 24" which would suit me perfectly

Can't speak for 4k on 24", but on my 40" Philips I have scaling disabled. Games run but you need something hefty to do the job on high settings.
