I think scythes as a weapon are actually a modern imagining, probably derived from the death imagery (which was derived from the imagery of a scythe cutting down whole swaths of grass at a go). Wikipedia says that a "war scythe" had the blade removed and reattached vertically which makes sense I guess. It would be kind of a crappy weapon for fighting bandits, but you could take out a bunch of ankles at once maybe?
