My international friends often go with the steps of JLPT, but I suggest you to complete it with easy ones that are ranked higher. 汽 for steam is ranked among the hardest if I recall, when it is actually just "san-zui" with the upper part of 気.
Then, practice does the rest. It is better to speak like a nigger but be able to express yourself a lot than strictly following the rules and unnecessarily stay in the lower ranks.
