Is there any actual way to select the 'none' screen lock option? It doesn't even appear in the menu, only Swipe/Pattern/Pin/Password.

Clearing credentials doesn't work and it's the only fix I can find through Google.

People with a nexus 6p:
Is the build quality actually good?
Have you had pink screen or non flush back panel or any other defects/ reasons to RMA?
At this point I'm actually considering a 5x just because of how many people are RMAing. The G4 looks good but the Kangaroo land version has no bootloader unlock, and I'd rather use a galaxy nexus than use an OEM skin. What phone do I buy? Also budget unlimited.
>>
>>51586868
>Is the build quality actually good?
no
>Have you had pink screen or non flush back panel or any other defects/ reasons to RMA?
no but still, the build quality is quite bad. It's weird because the thing feels so nice in your hand, but it's very fragile.
>At this point I'm actually considering a 5x
as if i'd fall for the 5x meme. shit has poor performance
>>
>>51586868
Build quality is fucking horrible. I dropped it off my bed onto carpet and the metal got a ding in it. I thank God the screen or back visor didn't fucking shatter

Screen looked kinda pink one time but that was after a robotrip, i haven't really noticed it otherwise. Pretty sure there is a slight pink hue though

If unlimited budget, why not just get a proper flagshit?

I got the htc m8 a few months ago. Really loved the phone until I discovered an issue with the bluetooth. I have to manually connect each time (going into the settings and tapping the device I want to connect to), the first time I tap it, nothing happens. The second time I tap it, the bluetooth resets and then connects to the device.

I would be hesitant to call it a dealbreaker, but it really is a major annoyance. I found out it's a problem in general with the m8. What I'd like to know is if this is also a problem with the m9, and if there are any other issues with that phone I should know about.

Does the G4 have much ROM support?
>>
>>51587739
Currently only if you have the fucking T-mo (and I think the international) variant. As far as I know we still don't even have an unlocked boot loader for sprint/us cellular/verizon.
>>
Should I use Solid Explorer 2.0 or stick with the classic version?
>>
>>51587739

The ROM support isn't great yet. Right now Tmo and I think international variant are getting unlocked bootloader.

US Cellular on the other hand... I'm starting to doubt I'll ever see rom support. I have rooted the phone though, so I uninstalled all bloatware etc. I generally can get 2-3 days of battery life out of the phone with normal usage, including ereading which it is good at with the big screen.

G4 tweaksbox is a godsend as well.

Does anyone know of a good ROM for the Redmi Note 2? I like CM but...

I bought a Nexus 6 which is my first Android phone. I'm coming from iOS. Is rooting recommended these days? I've heard that it's not as necessary as it used to be, but it sounds like you need to be rooted for full use of Greenify, AdAway, and Titanium Back up, which all sound like nice programs. Though rooting disables OTA and I'd have to manually download and install every security/feature/OS update myself, wouldn't I? Not sure if it's worth the loss of convenience or not. Why does rooting disable OTAs anyway?

Oh, I just remembered something else I wanted to ask. I've seen people bitching about ATT being slow pushing the Marshmallow update to Nexus 6es. Does that only affect people who bought the phone locked to ATT or every Nexus 6 user? I thought unlocked phones wouldn't have that issue.

Just got the 6p on a 2yr term with Rogers (yeah we get fucked up the ass in Canada with phones). It was on sale for black friday for 50 bucks down and I jumped on the 32gb version.

How bad did I fuck up? Will this phone last me at least a few years? Is the build quality that bad?
>>
>>51588397
Well, don't worry much about it. It is not much work anyways to manually run updates if you get TWRP or CWM as your recovery, and you can theoretically also do your 1:1 phone backup while you're at it.
>>
>>51588481
i live in a really small, shitty town on the central coast. I know people who have T-mobile and sprint and constantly complain about it being extremely spotty service. if i do switch, going to T-Mobile for sure though. I'm just gonna hold out on this data a little longer and maybe use the fuck out of it, im gonna try and hit over 200GB in a month before i leave
>>
>>51588528
Apart from the 2 years contract, you probably didn't fuck up too badly.

> Will this phone last me at least a few years?
That obviously remains to be seen. Well, as a phone, I think it will remain operable for a few years, yes.

You'll find out about new media formats and games and emulators and "killer apps" (whatever is popular, maybe they'll do 4k+4k resolution 3D VR compact glasses then) or whatever in a few years.

> Is the build quality that bad?
No. It's decent.

What does /g/ think of Sony Xperia C4 Dual? Also, what's the best sub-$400 phone out there?
>>
>>51586490
Good choice! I bought this back in September and it has been the best phone experience I have had (came from a G2). The G2 was good, but since I have large hands, the Nexus 6 was a good option. Also, if you want to root it, do it early. You have to manually unlock the bootloader which erases the user contents on the flash.
>>
Can anyone recommend a non-rooted way to make my Android's crappy homescreen look better?
>>
>>51588621
Sure. Although while I did need a replacement battery before due to aging, none of my phones broke because of physical damage. These things are almost as robust as a block of metal overall, really. I don't bother with cases anymore.

My phones more like, fell victim to technological obsolescence (current android & apps no longer possible to run conveniently on the Desire HD). Or, in the most recent case, me simply wanting to own the much quicker PDAF camera of the Redmi Note 2 as my snapshot gear.

OnePlus 2 or X
Xiaomi Mi4C or Redmi Note 2 / 3.

If you're in the USA (one of the few countries that doesn't have global FDD-/TDD-LTE bands) you'll not be able to get LTE on the Xiaomis. EU and so on will be fine.

Rooting is not really needed unless you're into heavy customization and or are an enthusiast. UN rooted android is still good and you can say that it has as many features as "jailbroken iOS". Rooting DOES break otas, but in your case, you can simply flash new updates from day dot through a custom recovery.

In my case, I simply can't love without root, adaway, closed, gravity box and other stuff are just too important to me to give up.

If you ever do wanna go back from rooting, its easy to undo it though.

Also, how's your nex 6 goin? How's the size? Battery, screen, camera, performance etc ? Do you find it as an upgrade from your old iPhone?

Currently now I have an iphone 4 with 16gb, I mostly use it to play mobile games and just changing region to download games is simple.

I don't have enough room on my phone anymore and it lags a lot, sometimes when I tap it, my touch won't verify and apps will close for no reason.

I was suggested to get an iphone6 because 'it's so great Apple products are wonderful' but I've wanted to try getting a Sony phone or at least something recommended with good specs.

It'll be used mostly for games, I'm not really tech savvy and while lurking these threads once in awhile I see a lot of dislike for Apple and more praise for Android phones, I've been looking at comments about pros and cons for each phone but I'm still not sure what kind I should get.

>>

See >>51588964.

The Iphone 6 also is good, as are the new Xperias and stuff, but they aren't nearly as good in terms of value.

Besides, Xiaomi's phones are made in the same Foxconn factories as dem iPhones, I think.
>>
I've had an HTC m8 for a little over a year now, probably more actually.
But its been slowly going downhill on me over the past 6ish months. Apps getting buggy, phone super sluggish, flesky killing it.
I'm thinking it might be time for a new phone soon. However I do a lot of manual labor from time to time when working outside on farms.
What would be a decent phone that's not too big? I like the smaller sizes so I can stick them in my pocket and still be pretty mobile.

It's $250 for the 32GB edition.

For example:

I checked though, the Zenfone 2 also is that when you import it... amazon.de prices are rip-offs, apparently.

The Redmi Note 2 Advanced is $170, by the way. Also still has a better camera than the Zenfone 2, and faster chipset.

You pay the import fees when you pay from a local dealer afaik plus some margin for them.

Find some store on aliexpress that ships from eu warehouses.
>>
>>51590188
> I am not sure about buying goods from china
It's the same thing as always, apart from customs fees/taxes (if you have any where you live), and perhaps the shipping times if you're not using one of the faster postal services. DHL, UPS, TNT, FedEx, (...) however can easily deliver in 3 days to a week or less.

Basically no problem, unless your customs are terrible. I heard they really suck in some places in South America, for example.

If you're in the EU, quite a few of the Chinese sellers have EU warehouses, too.

From experience, Xiaomi will take a while to port its big MIUI to a new Android version, though MIUI itself gets weekly updates & really long term support.

OnePlus is closer to stock with its OxygenOS, they might have it pretty soon.

Both already have user-made AOSP or CWM ports though personally I'm not in a hurry to get Android 6. [You know, for instance a better UI layout, copy&paste, permissions management, storage diagnostics and more stuff already was in MIUI since like Android 4.4 or so...]

Build quality is essentially perfect.

General performance is great. (45-50k on Antutu and what not).

MIUI is supported for years by Xiaomi if they keep doing what they did for past devices, and will get many updates.

>>51590571
Yep, ROM support - by Xiaomi:
http://en.miui.com/download.html

Much of what the predecessor mi4i got from third parties:
http://en.miui.com/thread-138587-1-1.html

The Mi4c has so far like a dozen MIUI derivatives, a bunch of AOSP ports for Android 5 and 6 and now a Cyanogenmod derivative, but I can't find a convenient listing somewhere.

Most iPhone haters are just retards

However if you're looking into getting an xperia phone, if think you'd like to check out maybe the z3 or the newer models, the z5. They have generally OK cameras, great battery life, SD card slot expansion for storing media files and etc., front facing speakers and the best of all, they're water resistant.

They're all glass like the iPhone 4 so you might need to get a case or skins or somethin gif you find glass slippery. Personally I have my s3 naked with just tempered glass protectors on both sides. I've dropped it a couple of times it it hasn't smashed yet.

I haven't encountered any problems with my phone yet so I think you'll be fine as well.

Also, yes it can play starlight stage at highest 3d settings smoothly.
>>
>>51590656
So what ROM alternatives are there for the Redmi note 2 or the Mi4c?
Also please continue about the build quality, I like premium feel and don't want shit to break easily. I think it's aesthetically pleasing to look at, but does it actually feel the same way? I can imagine it feels like plastic garbage.

>So what ROM alternatives are there for the Redmi note 2 or the Mi4c?
There are a bunch of international roms on xda as well as the miui.com forums for starters. Here are two for the mi4c:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-4c/development/unofficial-cyanogenmod12-1-mi-4c-t3226541
http://en.miui.com/thread-178354-1-1.html

Find more yourself. As I said, there's no convenient listing I'm aware of.

Also, I mostly don't care, I've preferred MIUI to AOSP, Cyanogen and everything else I've tried on the Redmi 1s (have not reevaluated it on the newer phones).

> Also please continue about the build quality, I like premium feel and don't want shit to break easily. I think it's aesthetically pleasing to look at, but does it actually feel the same way? I can imagine it feels like plastic garbage.
All feel fine to me. Feel free to get a replacement cover for a Redmi, order an OnePlus, or get a Mi4 or Redmi Note 3 (metal) if you prefer.

From past history: Few in the market have supported their phones as long as Xiaomi did, though some ended up getting only MIUI (and not base Android) updates eventually - probably 'cause of kernel porting issues or something.

You can just go to the MIUI download site http://en.miui.com/download.html and check how far they went with each phone.

Arguably, you don't have a support contract, who knows what will happen...

I want a phone with
> MicroSD
> Fingerprint scanner
> Wireless charging
> 2015 specs

I'm aware I can buy Qi wireless charging receivers, but I'd rather have a receiver chosen by the manufacturer.

Wat do?
>>
>>51591258
> Wireless charging
Is horseshit. You'll still have to bring your phone to a specific place, place it on there, and can't be using it while you charge it with worse efficiency.

You really have to be immensely lazy to want to even omit to plug in an USB Type-c cable (and I find it sad enough that people celebrate that you can plug those in both ways).

> Fingerprint scanner
Placebo security that probably makes things even easier than a pin for phone thieves. But eh, like with typical locks on houses and bikes and all that, people will like and use it anyways.

>>
>>51592315
>why the hell do you think fingerprint scanners are less secure then pin code
Because you leave your fingerprint literally everywhere - usually including your phone. You might as well write your PIN on it directly.

Yes, it's trivial to crack them at home too, dat internet explains how to do it.
>>
>>51592376
anyone with the resources to life your finger print off your device and then create a copy to get into your phone is the kind of person who is going to break into your phone regardless of your password fuck head.

The only people capable of that sort of shit are government agencies dumbass.
>>
>>51592251
Why would you want to get a g flex 2?

>>51592401
At least with a pass code you can change it. Once he's got your fingerprint, its with him forever. You can chnage your pin anytime you want and if the pin is long enough it'll take him around 10 lifetimes to crack it.
>>
>>51592440
I keep my phone encrypted the lock screen uses finger print lock, its backup password would take an estimated 1.56 10^31 years to crack by brute force.

Android encryption doesnt even load the operating system without that password. So as long as you dont physically steal my device while it is already turned on and unencrypted, you'll never break into it.
>>
>>51592440
>Why would you want to get a g flex 2?
Not him, but - why not? Its performance is very good right now, it's not overheating, the screen is gorgeous, the phone itself is very comfortable to hold - all that for very cheap. This phone has no serious flaws.

Anon, you are completely wrong. This has been demonstrated to be fucking trivial by people like the Chaos Computer Club and so on before. Actually more than a bunch of procedures, for a decade or two now.

Any faggot with like $0-30 to spend on top of what is already in almost any household can do it.
>>
>>51592749
Try it on your own phone if it has a finger print scanner, you'll find it actually ISNT that fucking simple and the average idiot will in no way be able to mimic your fingerprint with any real certainty, at least enough to fool your phones finger print scanner.

I've yet to see anyone fool the S6 scanner.

it needs to be plugged in, the GearVR has a passthrough.

You CAN use it on battery, but it dies sooooo fast.

Even the Note5 dies too quick really, unless it's at 100%, there is no way you are watching a full movie. And even then it will be down near dead by the time you're done.

VR takes a lot of power, for this generation anyway, you're going to be constrained to within a few feet of an outlet, or you can buy an aftermarket usb cable that is longer.

But you see all, right? Thieves call you when they pick door and bike locks, gay dudes call you to watch when they fuck down the street, and everyone who ever broke a clearly insecure Windows share showed you?

That is your problem here. CCC has however demonstrated that these placebo security scanners are very easily broken - done unless you can find a very good reason why their methods wouldn't work on your phone.

Hell, they've even done it with publically available images from press events, to show a pro-biometry politician that this shit is not safe.

again, which is why my phone is encrypted with a password that is stupidly difficult to brute force.

The only way stealing my finger print would give you access to my phone is if I left it turned on after unencrypting it and someone stole it before the battery died, or I powered it off.

Sure it is possible. BUT the moment my phone turns off, either by me or an app that can remotely restart my phone. They need the actual password before the phone even boots into the android OS.

I just use fingerprint unlock because once I have booted into android, its great using my fingerprint as a password for all apps and webpages and the lockscreen, and mobile payments.

Is the HTC One M9 that bad?

I really like the metal build and I don't care much about the camera, but it seems buying an M8 is a bit too late now.

Especially since I missed this week sales and it might be a while until I get my money to get a phone.

Europe. Budget: approximately 500$.

So basically all imported phones (above 350 $) from outside the EU will cost an extra 100$ in taxes and shipping. It feels kinda crazy and weird to pay for more than 400 bucks on an M8 or to pay 550$ for an M9.

Don't suggest me Nexus or LG or Moto or Oneplus or any of those phones, because I don't like any of them. I wanted to get a Note 4 or 5, but the amoled burn in issue is too much for me, since I'm not sure I'll be able to buy a new phone every 2 years. So, I thought HTC would be a safe bet, if I can ignore the camera. Thoughts?

Is the M8 still worth buying if the price goes over 400? Is the M9 really worth 500? I try to avoid buying from shady Asian places, like China or Hong Kong, since I've heard it can be very hit and miss and you might get the wrong model/colour or some shit like that.

> People are saying with the Redmi2 that you can't pick Europe as a location.
I dimply recall there might not have been an "Europe" in the "quick init wizard" thing but you can pick Europe for the whole two-three settings it affects (time zone, date format, and, uh, something?) in the settings any time.

If that still bothers you, you can flash the xiaomi.eu rom, I equally dimly recall that one *had* quick init settings for specific European countries. I did that to get everything including the stock app's captions in german, for grandma who's not so fluent in english.

> What about an iPhone? I'd be interested if the price weren't so high. I don't want to be messing with really techy stuff all the time.
I don't like them beyond the price. Nothing particularly good about them as far as I'm concerned, save for the cameras on the high-end models.

And yes, the Apple phones also come at a steep price. Your call, really.

Also not like the choice is between a Redmi 2 2GB and iPhone only - dem Xiaomi phones are just what I bought for myself, acquaintances and family members 'cause they are a nice deal.

Do you mind using an extended battery and case? Battery is not bad but it does not last if your using it to watch videos.

Why are you talking about a cheap phone like the redmi then an iphone in the same sentence? Are you retarded?

> Cardboard has nothing but lenses.
But your phone can have rather good orientation sensors. The difference isn't very big then, I had no problems with cardboard tracking quite exactly what I was looking at.

> The apps actually fucking work unlike cardboard which just feels shitty and clunky
Felt pretty smooth to me. The magnetic button was a bit un-smooth, though.

I just got a Note 4 and I'm looking for an app for reading manga offline.

I tried simply making a folder for each chapter but the default gallery app orders them in an order that's completely fucked, is there an app that could directly read chapters from .zip files for example?

"Comic reader" or whatever in the store gives you quite many choices.

Looking for a medium sized phone.
>nice camera
>decent battery
>expandable storage
Those are main priorities

The difference is HUGE. The galaxy S6 sensors are already the best you can get in a phone. Use the S6 in cardboard vs GearVR and it's night and day. GearVR was made FOR the S6 and note5. And John carmack wrote the code for the GearVR head tracking so it's wayyyy better than any phones internal sensors.

What is that, how does it work and is it cheap?
And what would I use the case for?

What's medium to you?

These days medium means 5-5.5" screen size.

Large is over 5.7"

Small or compact is anything under 5"

Haven't seen a larger test of gyros and accuracy anywhere yet.

> The difference is HUGE
Not seeing it anyways, since cardboard worked really just fine. Tracked my head's movements reliably, quickly (25-40ms? dunno) and accurately to about 1.5 degrees or so.

Maybe you can have 0.5 degrees and with lower latency, but you'd have to be playing FPS to even care about that. I do not feel it mattered shit for the arcade-like games, immersive 3D movie clips, and so on.
