Wonder what's driving this.

They've gained back marked share from Nvidia lately, so I don't think sales have been too bad. Although they didn't gain back much, so in a way they are.

1: They got a shit ton of stock they need to clear before Arctic Islands hits
2: They noticed a change in the tide and go all-in to gain market share back
3: ?

>>51537372
Why would they slash the price on a GPU they released a week ago? 380X is a top card, you just need to move the power limit slider up in CCC. I can't believe they fucked that up.

>>51537374
AMD is now the top choice at all price points. Crimson is outstanding. Nvidia objectively doesn't have an angle of attack on AMD now. Even with their overclocking figured in, AMD cards have better price/performance ratios.

Man this is excellent timing. I need to upgrade my PC and I was wondering about switching to Nvidia but I need to have something affordable.

Is the R9 380x good enough? I don't want to play FO4 at ultra settings, high or even medium at 60fps will do.
>>
>>51537702
My 290 can handle ultra flawlessly so you'll be okay running it at least high.

Has making a fury X suddenly become much cheaper for AMD?
Doubtful.

More likely is that fury X cards just aren't selling and they need to cut the price to even break even.

But the 380X will do 40-60 pretty easily at medium.

There's no need because of the sheer volume the Nvidia cards move. Retailers are giving more leeway on pricing and might even reduce the prices just to get the people to order, hoping they add some normal price items to the cart.

Nobody wants AMD cards that's why they never go on sale and sit on the shelf. Retailers in turn stop ordering inventory forcing AMD to drop the price.

No dvi was the immediate deal breaker for me. I didn't even bother looking at the performance.

I feel they lost a lot of sales without the dvi. All the best gaming monitors made between 2010~2014 were dvi. Only people that used dp at the time were 60hz budget brand users.

They loss their target audience with the fury x. Nobody is going to buy a new card and a new monitor when they can buy a card that supports their old monitors. Even if they are going to buy a new monitor and card gsync is more enticing anyways because money is obviously no concern.
>>
>>51537372
People who want a card that uses literally half the power while still being capable of 1080p.
>>
>>51538363
Are you serious? DVI and HDMI need to die already, DP can do all those thing and more.

At this point, DVI and VGA are legacy adapters, and HDMI is primarily found on TVs. Every good display made in the past 5 years has DP.

Plus, Freesync is much more interesting than G-Sync, where you need to worry that your 200$ extra feature won't work in three years, because Nvidia decides to drop it.
>>
>>51537818
And that 10% is the exact amount needed to stop you running ultra at 1080.
The 380X is perfectly positioned, being the cheapest card capable of maxing out 1080p @ 60fps in modern AAA games.

That's the reason why the Fury x is selling so bad and why the price is dropping. The market disagrees with the decision and is fixing itself.

Drivers need to strike a golden point, both nvidia and AMD are far from this point.

AMD have driver releases few and far between, but quite often push out a "beta" driver. These drivers often include numerous optimisations and fixes. The trouble being is just how often these are released. This does of course mean there has been plenty of time to properly test them and fine tune them further.

nVidia on the other hand like to push out drivers as often as the sun rises. And it's not exactly all that good for the customer in the end. While yes, they get some early fixes for the latest AAA titles, what they also get, is something that has not been thoroughly tested. As we have seen of late, nvidia do not care if a driver kills hardware, or simply makes it so the game it provides fixes for refuses to launch, or even crashes regularly. Then, every month or so, a driver will come along which fixes problems caused by previous releases, and provides a handful of optimisations to AAA titles released since the functional driver update.

>But nvidia still has driver updates for my GTX480!
nVidia bundle their drivers together so that all their GPUs get "updated" with each driver release, but all that happens is a reinstall of the current driver. Ask yourself when the last time the 780ti got a performance increase from a driver. Yet alone something as aged as a 480.

>TLDR
Both AMD and nVidia are shit with drivers.
But atleast AMD haven't killed hardware with their drivers.
>>
>>51540479
I want my day one optimization, but that should come natively with the game

Each AAA release should not have its own drivers.

No. Game ready drivers have then tested on older cards and it provides performance increases.

Nvidia is years ahead of AMD in terms of drivers. Everybody knows that. There's no denying it. That's why they held a dedicated conference a few days ago making a massive fuss about new drivers. If you want to talk about old shit start with their announcement of officially abandoning their 5000/6000 series cards released in 2011.

Is it worth it to upgrade from a GTX 60 to a 390 or even to a Fury right now? Or, should I wait for the next batch of cards, which are supposed to be significant improves to the current crop of cards?
>>
>>51540722
If the 390x has dual graphics support then go right ahead. If anything just removing the graphics bottleneck provided by the 7870 (As amazing a GPU as it is, it is aged at this point, but still going strong in my friend's rig), then you'll see a notable increase in performance anyway.

The 6700 won't hold you back in terms of CPU performance. At best you're only going to make up 10 frames from spending $500 on a new CPU. So it's really not worth it.

the fact that 7970 started out as slower than a 780ti and is now faster just proves that amd drivers are epic.

now those cards are still relevant, i know because i have two 280x and they run everything with ease.
>>
>>51540964
>Why do you keep repeating this like it's important?
Why do you think it's not important?
How could killing your customer's GPU through a failure to test your driver, not be important?

You want to argue who has the worse drivers, and yet you fail to acknowledge how bad nVidia's have been.

I have been more than fair in stating both the advantages and disadvantages of both AMD and nVidia's approach on releasing drivers. And honestly, if nVidia hadn't have killed my 680 with their shit, then I would probably be running a 780ti right now.

Having the odd artifact is one thing. And not entirely something to steer you away from a manufacturer, but killing hardware most certainly is.

>4 different architectures.

...No.

R700 was abandoned in 2010 with the release of R800. Those were the 4xxx GPUs released in 2008.

R800 variants are the 5870/6970, with some variants releasing released mid 2011. Those are what AMD officially abandoned a few days ago.

So no, it's not four different architectures, but one.

How do I know this?

Because I own a 4850 and a 5850 and they've become paperweights because AMD doesn't want to support one generation old GPUs.

Typical Nvidiafag FUD.
Not getting driver updates don't make your cards stop working, you retard. They will still function normally as they always have, they just won't get optimizations that give a few extra % performance in new releases.
>>
>>51540867
It's easy to support old shit when the core of your architecture hasn't changed since 2006.

The only reason any of their chips get a performance boost is because they haven't actually changed the hardware behind their chips in almost a decade. Anything that isn't their latest generation of chips is already in legacy.
http://www.nvidia.com/page/legacy.html

AMD, on the other hand, has had several different architectures come through, with vastly different core designs. VLIW 5, VLIW 4, R700.

>>51541133
>one generation old GPUs
Yeah no. 5000 series is at least 4 generations old. GCN is AMD's first long-term core architecture. They won't be abandoning it anytime soon, and they need to get rid of their old code to reduce the size of their drivers and overhead as a result.

I'd expect this move to reduce their drivers by 100-200MB and also maybe give a couple % performance increase on its own.
>>
>>51541133
>R800 variants are the 5870/6970
confirmed for having no clue what you're talking about.
there's no R800, you fucking idiot. starting with the 5000 series AMD moved to actual codenames instead of R-numbers for chips. 5000 was evergreen (names of trees, like cypress and juniper) and 6000 series was northern islands (like cayman and barts).
>>
>>51541397
>with vastly different core designs. VLIW 5, VLIW 4, R700
the R700 series was VLIW5. the R600 too. the only difference was minor revisions for new shader models (R600 was DX10, R700 was DX10.1, Evergreen was DX11)
>>
>>51540867
Nice strawman. 480 was always as fast as a 7850
Meanwhile second gen Kepler (780/780ti) used to be considerably faster than competing Hawaii chips. These days the 780 can barely stay ahead of the 7970.
First gen Kepler (680/770) is doing even worse.
