Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Does anyone know if the Power Manager works on Windows 8.1?

You can run the installer in Windows 7 compatibility mode, I managed to set battery thresholds on my X220 so at least that works.

Would an X61 work decently as a drawing tablet in the same sort of idea as a Surface/Cintiq?

I'm sure it doesn't have the sensitivity of them, but would it work at least semi decently?
>>
>>51535812
It's pretty good.
>>
Got a new Thinkpad with DOS, installed win7 on it a few min ago.

Now i need the drivers, on the lenovo homepage there are single drivers and there is also a "SCCM Package". Can anybody tell me how to install this shit? When donwload was finished it was a .exe and i installed it on my thinkpad, but there where no fucking driver installed? WTF. What to do?
>>
>>51536017
So delay shouldn't be a big issue either, would it?
>>
>>51536442
You'll quickly get used to it. It's not much different from a Surface or iPad Pro and very close to a Wacom Cintiq. Delay/Lag is a non-issue with brushes smaller than 40px.
What could be an issue is parallax (cursor deviation) especially at the edges.
>>
>>51536511
I just used those as a simple comparison.

Really, my only point of reference would be from the WiiU/3DS's touchscreens.

As for problems near the edges, wouldn't it make sense to just move the area your focusing on into the center anyway(aside from sketching or larger stuff)?
>>
>>51536546
There's no comparison with 3DS/WiiU touchscreens, these digitizers are completely different in the way they operate. The deviation issue isn't too bad because the cursor appears when your pen is hovering about 2cm above the screen, which helps with positioning the cursor.
But yeah, the X61t is perfectly adequate for sketching, parallax has less of an effect when you're doing quicker and longer strokes.
>>
What's your opinion on Lenovo System Update?
Seems pretty handy and I use it to avoid having to manually install all the drivers. Is there anything shady about that I don't know of?
>>
I'm looking for a thinkpad, but it actually needs to be decently priced and capable of running adobe suite decently which I guess is a hard thing to achieve as I'm not made of money.

>>
>>51497823
>It's cheaper and a 2nd gen i5 is comparable in performance to a broadwell (i5-5200u) one

This is sort of a blessing in disguise for those of us with older machines. The i7-2720QM in my W520 will kick the living shit out of the i5-5200u in my work-issued T450, despite the fact that the latter has a 5-year advantage. And software developers are aware of this, so more than ever older computers remain usable long into the future. My mother is still on a T60 which is more than adequate enough for daily internet tasks, despite being 9 years old. The reason being is it's probably more powerful than the average cell phone that everyone's fawning over now.

At the same time this trend is sort of pathetic. A Tx10 will yield about the same performance as a Tx50 unit. So when you upgrade in a few years, you're basically going back to square one.

>>51534555
The 2920XM. You *can* put in even faster processors, but you would need to upgrade the stock heatsink, which would mean doing some of your own Frankenstein engineering. Either way you'd be an idiot to put in anything more than a 2820QM or even a 2760QM, because the performance gains of anything beyond those are negligible, despite a very large price premium.
>>
>>51537402

Something that won't get fucked if I drop it and that can run adobe suite well, multiple applications and stuff.
>>
>>51534157

Good laptop if you can find it for a good price. Only get it if you need the better iGPU over the T420 though, as the T420 is a goof $100-$200 cheaper.
>>
>>51538372
The ThinkPad Twist took over that after the X230 Tablet, and now we have the ThinkPad Helix and Yoga, which are not nearly as good.
>>
>>51540555
X220 battery life is not really that great, even with a brand new 9cell, I had trouble getting more than 6 hours programming/moderate usage. I also purchased a slice battery, which bumped that up to 10-12 hours, but the slice is a pain in the ass, it makes the laptop super heavy, and wobble around a lot when I pick it up.
>>
>>51534326
Yeah youll have to do compatibility mode to make it work

T430, X140e, E431, and 11e worked for me when I had them. X1 Carbon 3 didn't want to work...

>>51539102
Unless you are going to consider showing a source or guide, it is not easy.
afaik its nearly impossible, and if it wasn't /g/ would be all over it.

also I don't believe its possible using the same digitizer, its pretty much fubar once its removed.

>>51539245
true, there is the ThinkPad Twist but then again its just an ultrabook with a swivel display, unsure of its toughness compared to X series, my S230 didn't seem that bad but not X61T/200T levels.

>>51539656
I like the E63xx series, the E6420 and later are just fuckton hueg.

>>51536442
I didn't feel much delay but I was using the first version of Photoshop CS on my X61T. But it was a bit slow when it came to using inkscape when I did my ThinkPad timeline.
>>
>>51537780
A lot of laptops can take a drop, so it depends how hard it falls... but SSD is really what matter and being careful, otherwise you'd want a toughbook /getac/XFR Latitude and I know you won't be able to afford that.

Well, you see, first they have to fold your order up into a plane and catapult it over to ChingChong province, then they ahve to paisntakingly assemble it from fresh components, then they have to chop down the trees, mulch them, bleach them and extrude the card to make the box, then they need to load it into a pedalo and pedal over the Pacific to deliver it, they need to do this 2 or 3 times because being Chinese they will almost certainly try and sneak it past customs a few times and get turned around...

Seriously Lenovo is a fucking joke. I deal with them at work and getting anything delivered is a gargantuan pain in the arse.

People say it is a bad resolution, but I am fine with it on my X220 and X230. For the small screen, it actually has a fairly OK pixel density, and the aspect ratio is good for Chinese cartoons and programming etc.

If you are looking for something larger though, like a T420 or T430, 1366x768 is a pretty rough ride, although not unbearable.

X220 is a good machine, don't be so quick to rule it out. As for the T420s, I would stay away, the battery is smaller, and therefore runtime is decreased, and the slimmed down form factor means it gets warmer too. The classic T420 is where it is at.

Also, the best most definite way to get the screen resolution is asking the seller, but most machines with the higher end parts (i7s, Nvidia GPU) will also have the higher resolution screen. There is always a chance though, so I would not risk it.
>>
>>51547489
/g/ will shit on the X250, but in all honesty it is a pretty great machine, good battery life, fast parts, with lots of options and cool features, and you can buy it new.

But if you are looking for something like the X220, your only real option is the X220.

I have a e6510 and had e6430 and the 510 was a lot bigger than the 430.
plus they have those fuck huge coolers that are pretty damn good at keeping them cool (much better than the t410 or 420.
>>
>>51548520
X series has soldered CPUs, you can't upgrade them short of completely replacing the motherboard. T420 is your best bet for upgradability, especially now that we're starting to see BIOS mods that allow the usage of Ivy Bridge processors and up to 1866mhz RAM. Once things are further along and problems are hammered out it's going to be a very good time to be a T420 owner.
>>
>>51548390
Honestly thats not a bad deal, they are normally worth 60 - 120 depending on condition on eBay and locally.

>>51548375
You know its just you and some other dude.
Did you try anti-x?
If anything I think you would get better help from the TP Forum.

>>51548520
I don't know the development for that bios on the T420 but the X220, X series and 's' or slim models all have soldiered CPUs on their motherboard so you would have to do a mobo swap rather than a CPU swap, pain in the ass and costly.

>>51548555
I don't have much experience with Dell laptops to really say much about them other then setting them up for sell for maximum profit, but I am a bit bias/fanboy to ThinkPads.

What kind of specs can you get with a t61? I want to mod my t420, but I imagine the t61 is just too old to be of real use.
>>
>>51548915
Specwise T420 is far superior than the T61
Build wise its the otherway around, formfactor, keyboard feel, modding, the T61 has been much better.

A T430 will still be a better performer than the T420. Honestly the keyboard feel/layout differences is minimal from those two, if I want a good keyboard I'll type with my X300, A31p or T43p.

Fine. Does this appeal to you then? I just want a small lappy that will travel well. It would be used for browsing and writing papers. I've been lugging around this early 2000s gaming laptop that I got as a kid and it's simply too big and heavy to be efficient.

It's not that great, really. Fickle as hell and I don't know if the time it takes for the software to load at the login screen is shorter than the time it would take to just type a password.
