Hyper V

Parallels on OS X is second to none. However, it also is a subscription service that masquerades as something else.
>>
On OS X it's VMWare Fusion

These are hypervisors, not VMs.

Crouton for chromebooks, 1 line in the terminal = download/install crouton/create linux partition/install linux distro
no bloat on them either, all options come as minimalistic as possible

Hijacking thread: programs are free if you pirate. What's the best VM in general?
>>
>>51484552
hi, vmm expert here from europe. there is no best. every vmm is good for something. eg xen is performant, vmware is easy to manage, virtualbox is present on every platform, qemu/kvm has a lot of features, etc.

hyper-v is special, i don't think it is usable at all for production. maybe in small environments, like 20-30 phy. hosts at top. and has hell slow IO.

there are different needs for an enterprise and for personal usage.

i like xen and kvm under openstack. and running kvm on my notebook.

I use VMware Workstation. Player is good too if you don't have money and don't like piracy. It's fast and stable, available pretty much everywhere, and has a good GUI for configuring things. Some almost-never-used options aren't in the GUI, but the config files are all plain text like "setting = value". I've gotten it to do goofy things like use a physical disk but only allow access to one partition and have a separate virtual MBR.

Pieces of it can also be used to do things that don't involve a VM as well. I've used the vmdk mounter tool with a simple custom vmdk file as "mount -o loop" on Windows. I've also used its VM-host private networking and virtual NICs on the host to satisfy a network simulator thing.

that's a weird question. the VM is the emulated system. did you mean VMM?

Hyper-V if you got Windows 8 or higher.
That said, KVM and QEMU are breddy gud if you're obsessed with your freedums.

Are you a fuckin' dumbass?
A hypervisor is literally a VM.
Do you know what they call guest OSes?
Supervisors.
Holy shit dude, you could not possibly know less about virtual machines.

Free as in price, or libre software?

VirtualBox has a libre version, but extensions and extra features are free in price, not software freedoms.

a hypervisor or VMM is the thing that is running the VM

Stupid question: Is there a free alternative to create a VM from a physical machine?
VMWare can already do that, but I'm not allowed to do it in the company I'm working for, and I don't feel like dishing out $15k for a license, or pirate it, if I can do it for free.
>>
>>51485697

this makes no sense

do you mean installing an os on another computer and logging into it remotely

then yes
>>
>>51485697
Does VirtualBox do it? If not, create a blank VM with the desired specs in it, and boot a live Linux in it, like the Parted Magic on UBCD, and on the PC you want to convert. Run Clonezilla and image the PC into the VM. Shut down and boot the VM. With luck it'll come up alright, install some drivers, and then you can install Guest Additions.
>>
>>51485757
>>51485725
Fuck, yeah I dun goof'd:
If you have a physical PC in your network, you can convert it to a VM in VMWare. It's pretty useful when you have some old shit you need to backup and decommision the PC.
