Well i'd reccomend urxvt, it should be rxvt-unicode in apt. It's pretty much xterm but with more features and less bullshittery.
As for how to install the font, just follow the image.

dug my .tmux.conf out of the gutter. pleasantly surprised that the pane splitting/shortcut commands are still in my muscle memory after not using it for a few years

Yeah the only benefit I could see for having it enabled is being able to click on the tabs in the bar if you're too lazy to use the keyboard. It's pretty nice in urxvt with the latest bash. Terminal.app is alright (complex glyphs like those used with toilet/figlet slow it down to a crawl though).
