Most reliable SSDs and HDDs?

Let me clarify: I JUST mean most reliable. All SSDs are too fast for me to fucking care, I just need to know which one is least likely to irreparably lose my data. Same deal with hard disks. I'm about to do a new build and I want an SSD for windows and linux, and a HDD for all the other stuff.

My first thought is WD black for the HDD but I'm pretty lost as to SSD reliability. Thoughts?

Not in the enterprise segment, where reliability is the biggest factor. And even in the consumer segment, there are better drives but since consumerfags are generally stupid, all that matters is marketing. Loved that TRIM-Bug Samsung SSDs had under Linux which caused data loss, oh yeah so reliable

Rather than rely on a single reliable expensive Samsung/Intel why not get two cheaper SSDs (Crucial has a good rep) and just use RAID/Mirrored Volumes so you don't lose everything when one dies.

For backup I expect your HDD will be larger than the SSD so backup SSD contents to HDD regularly

Are OCZ unreliable?
>>
>>51449980
Old school ones? Definitely. Randomly died on me 2014 after two years of so-so service. It was a 120gb drive. No signs of it going to fail, either.

New school OCZ may be better under Toshiba, but I doubt it. Typically they just buy up the manufacturer and let them do their thing.

It's alright man, I can't afford one to
>>
>>51449122

Man, I bought 3 toshiba 3tb drives and 2 of them failed pretty fast... not entirely failed, but programs (hd sentinel, some othe program) reported low sectors with lots of warnings and the drives slowed down the computer when I was accessing them etc.

I have a WD320 from 9 years ago still working fine, nd a WD from 6 years ago, and Samsung from 5-6 years ago, Seagate 3tb also died a while back

So I had bad experience with toshiba

>>
Here is my strategy:

buy SSD
while True:
write 100+TB
sell it to noobs who dont know about SSD endurance.
buy a new one
>>
>>51450342
Will take you a while, not get your hope up on the sell price. Techreport used ~8 months of constant writes for that amount of data.
>>
>>51450381
what is constant writes? bcuse people here act like its nonstop writing and thats pretty much bullshit you can disprove with a elementary school math.

SSDs will die after a day of nonstop full speed constant writes, go on test it out, or you know just do the math.
>>
>>51450342
been using an SSD as OS drive for 2 years now, and i have written 5.3 TB to it, so reaching 100 before SSD's are obsolete is unlikely for normal use.
>>
>>51450420
ofc when you disable prefetch, superfetch, hiberfile, indexing....

but the problem is that software layer should not care about hardware, thats what layers of absctraction are for. SSDs pretty much go against tens of years of IT practices. OS doing compromises and turning shit off on install because it detects an SSD is bullshit.
>>
>>51450407
500MB/s write for 24 hours is 43TB.
What now?
>>
>>51450407
SATA III has a maximum transfer speed of 6GB/s. So i would take ~170 sec to write a TB. The 840 PRO died at ~2400 TB, which would take ~4.74 days.

But this is the maximum transfer speed, which is unlikely to be meet. But they did some reads too.

In addition the programs they used to write data did it in small chunks.
>>
>>51450479
thats about the warranty limit of 128GB ssds, congrats, you dont have a warranty after a single day of full usage.
>>
>>51450491
keep in mind you can bypass the SATA III limit by doing 512kB writes, the SSD has to overwrite a 4MB block to write that so you are essentially writing 8 times faster.

ofc the internal write speeds of the ssd still apply, just that you are not limited by the SATA III in this case.
>>
>>51450041
I see so many Toshiba drives fail that I don't touch them with a 9ft barge pole. The MKxx76GSX series in particular are just junk.
>>
bought an 850 Evo during a flash sale on Amazon for 143$ how screwed am I?
>>
>>51450898
Hitachi still has a higher failure rate for me, followed by Toshiba, followed by Western Digital, and then Seagate as the generally most reliable (lowest RMA/DOA/failure rate). Samsung seems somewhere between WD and Seagate, I think, with the failure rate out-of-box being higher than WD overall for equivalent quality lines.
>>
>>51449980
When they came out, I bought 2 ocz agility 3. Both were 120gb. A month later, I got a 240gb. Same brand. They were cheap, and I was poor. The more I read about em, the more scared I got. All 3 are flashed to their latest firmware, the 2 120gb are in raid 0 in my desktop and the 240 resides as my laptop's main drive. I'm still waiting for them to fuck up at All. My guess is...it all comes down to whether you got got your crap from a good batch or not. A friend of mine had a 240 as well, but it died completely after 3 months of light usage.

OCZ is all over the place, I have a Vertex 3 that's been amazing for the 5 years I've been using it, but I'm always hearing horror stories about people's OCZ drives dying in unexpectedly-shitty ways, I think their only good drives were the ones using Sandforce if I remember right

>tfw 45 in 2024
>>
>>51450982
That seems about right. Seagates seem to last for years and then die gracefully in my experience, as long as you monitor the SMART status.

Several years ago the Hitachi in my moms then new laptop just went from being fine one day to very slow access times (windows taking 25 minutes to boot).

WD on the other hand seems to just dies out of the blue, I mostly find them in consumer laptops where they don't have any backups.
>>
>>51444681
Samsung drives have the longest life

Intel drives have the most stable speed and go into read only mode when it's about to break so you can know to back up the data

>>
>>51445682
>you uneducated swine

Not him, but most Toshiba HDDs are rebranded Hitachi drives. Hitachi is produces among (if not) the most reliable drives.

You have a point that real Toshiba drives are shit though.

Just for reliability it's:
>Hitachi >>> WD >> Toshiba >>>> Failgate

When Samsung drives weren't just rebranded Shitgates they were actually pretty much top tier though.

As for SSDs
>Samsung MLC drives >= Intel >= Crucial >= ADATA (premium drives) >= everything else like Corsair etc. > Samsung TLC drivs >= Sandisk >>> Kingston

Yeah I know 5 years on 850 EVO, I still don't trust these fuckers though.
>>

>rebranded
Last I checked Hitachi's HDD business was sold out. Initially WD intended to buy all of it, but regulators stepped in and allowed only 2.5" HDDs, while the 3.5" stuff went to Toshiba.

What Toshiba does make are pretty good SSDs. Fuck Memesung.
>>
>>51451097
>>51450982
What's die gracefully?

Also what does monitoring SMART tell you? is hard disk sentinel fine for it?
>>
>>51452129
Reallocated and uncorrectable sectors start stacking up gradually which alerts things like hd sentinel to the coming doom.

As oppses to the drive going an hero without any indication, health is fine one minute but won't even initialize in the next.

>>
>>51452048
just checked and you are right, but Toshibas have been rebranded Hitachis. Now Hitachi builds for Toshiba, so thinks should still be good.

I don't think the minor differences in SSD performance matters to most consumers. Just buy what ever is the cheapest with the longest warranty period. Those minor differences in IOPS, random 4k read and write, power consumption, and mixed performance are not really noticeable or detrimental to your average gamer.

Only buy high-end SSDs if you have a definite need of certain qualities (like high write endurance for people working with multimedia) or firmware (like support for AES128 encryption). Most consumers will never need or use all of those features, so it's a waste of money.

They wouldn't give that kind of warranty if they weren't 100% sure that every drive would at least do that. So stop worrying.

Why would you think that? It has no moving parts, and nothing to indicate failure. If something goes wrong with it, it takes the whole drive with it. It didn't have anything to do with write cycles, it just shit itself for whatever reason.

Samsung 950 PRO or Samsung SM951 for PCIe NVMe MasterRace
>Samshit
They're the major (and in the case of M.2 PCIe, the only) name in the business.

What I have is the most cheapest 120 GB ssd I could find. I only use it for my OS though and Adobe Light room and Photoshop. 1 year. So far it was worth it. HyperX 120GB

Bullshit. I own one, but that doesn't mean it is still the best.

It has been surpassed, there are ones worth over $6000 now.

>>

you don't need 10 years warranty because that ssd will be a pos anyway, 5 years is enough

So I actually have both, got them for the same price. Decided not to be lazy about it and test it out. The Corsair performs worse, way worse. Pretty pathetic for an SSD really. So pathetic I decided to zero it out and test again, slightly better but still terrible. And then again to make sure it wasn't a faulty SATA connection. No wonder it was on sale.

So I answered my own question, don't buy Corsair budget shit. I'm giving this shitty SSD away to my friend and keeping the Sandisk.

This ssd is turning 3 years old on the 26th of this month actually

18TB writes of normal use

the only thing that got worse is the write speed got a little slower, but i don't complain since i read from it mostly anyway

Or could it have been?

So I'm getting this. What should I do? I've got most of my data backed up.

This is the HDD that came with my Inspiron back in 2011. I'm now using it in my T420.
>>
>>51467534
Pretty much get a new drive. What's the program called that you're using?
>>
>>51444681
have a 3 year old adata 256gb with original w7 install thats working perfectly been with my through 4 builds now.

Hard disk sentinel.

Do you think the drive will last another 31 days?
>>
I have yet to hear of anyone have an SSD drive go into read only mode to back up their shit. Especially past a reboot.
>>
>>51467534
Seriously consider an SSD. Your T420 will feel like a completely different device.
>>
>>51468390
I am. But I can't get it for another 15-20 days for reasons, so need to last this HDD till then so that I can transfer the win10 license to the SSD.
>>
>>51468406
I believe that is 31 days of continuous use, 24/7(???) so I think you're fine.
>>
>Put an SSD in my laptop.
>It was like I just got a new laptop. >Spinning media a shit.
>>
Crucial BX100 any good?
>>
>>51468446
Spinning media is alright for backups, but yea as a primary OS drive its slow as balls and has garbage access time required for a quick system. First time i put in an SSD in my pc and installed an os on it it was like using a pc for the first time all over.

On the flipside when an HDD starts to die it has some telltales that its going and throws out errors. When my SSD die (ive had two die on me) they just both insta go kapoot and are not recognizable in bios or anywhere else and that's that.
>>
>>51468429
Yeah, I'm gonna use it as little as I can.

>>51468729
>installed an os
Do you know how to transfer an OS from an HDD to an SSD, preferably with other files as well?
>>
>>51468808
Use cloning software.
>>
>>51449822
>fraps
>being this 12
>>
>>51468814
Does it also transfer the OS license?
>>
>>51468880
yes, it literally makes a clone copy.
>>
>>51468928
It makes pretty much a 1:1 copy of the drive so I'd say yeah.
>>
>>51468814
>>51468928
Another guy here.
Stupid question, but just to be absolute sure, you can do the transfer over to another HDD if the OS is installed on a HDD, or an SSD if the OS is installed on a SSD, right?
>>
>>51468928
>>51468952
Noice. Lets hope my HDD survives the process.
>>
>>51468964
I don't see a reason why you couldn't do it even from HDD->SSD. If the drive you copy it is bigger you can just enlarge it later.
>>
>>51469001
*copy it to
I accidentally a word.

Get a few in raid 1 if youre that concerned about your data

I know it's only anecdotal but these drives have lasted me for years, particularly commendable is the fact that the external seagate is the oldest of them all and still pulling it's weight

>>
>>51469174
The 500 gig one is selling for cheap on visa checkout Tiger direct too
>>
>>51469198
I just bought it for games. Don't need half second faster load times I'd get from getting a samsung.
>>
>>51469187
lel, I was looking at the same thing.

>>51469198
Yeah, I thought so too. Don't really want ultraextremepro edition stuff cause I just want faster boot times and app launches and beginner SSD's are fine for that.

>>51469203
Yeah, but I wanna keep it small cause bigger drives make me hoard useless shit.
>>
>>51469227
I feel it, I was actually wanting a 1tb ssd but really what are the benefits vs just getting a hardrive.
>>
>>51469262
Yeah. I plan on getting a caddy for my laptop so I can later add a new HDD for backup and stuff. Saving pr0n on a $300 SSD seems dirty, for lack of a better word.
>>
>>51444681
I bought a Samsung 830 256GB ssd 3-4 years ago. The ssd is still 100% health with 15TB writes on it. I guess this drive will be retired before it breaks.
>>
>>51444681
I've understood that the Samsung's 850 series is the most reliable SSD for average user.
>>
>>51469410
But considering the price, a cheaper SSD would work out better in that it would cost less to replace as bigger drives become available and the average user wouldn't be writing petabytes so the Samsung one would be overkill.
>>
>>51469064
OCZ ARC 10 is really solid for a budget SSD.
Their older stuff is hit and miss, but their most recent Vector and Vertex are Samsung EVO/PRO-beating SSDs.
I'd buy them, if they didn't have a maximum size of 480 GB.
>>
>>51470620
>I'd buy them, if they didn't have a maximum size of 480 GB.
They go up to 960.

>>
>>51471338
I believe his is referring to the 32gb on a 512gb drive that is reserved for bad sectors and dead cells.

Kind of bad omen when even your manufacturer has no confidence in your ability to keep your own shit together.
>>
>>51471338
Considering that a 1TB EVO goes for about the same price as a Vector. That's 40GB extra for the same price.
>>
>>51471422
It has a 5 year warranty so I'm not too worried.
>>
>>51471629
I never understood this.

Why does the warranty on a drive fucking matter at all when

ZERO
E
R
O

Drive manufacturers come with data recovery included.

Like who gives a shit if you give me a new drive, that's a given man, where the fuck is my GOD DAMN DATA?
>>
>>51471703
Yeah theres literally no reason why i'd want my 200+ dollar drive to have a warranty!!
