I know that i3 is a window manager. Regardless, it looks like shit unless you're willing to spend hours tweaking config files and reading through documentation. It's fine if you're a NEET or a hobbyist, but those of us with jobs and girlfriends that aren't 2D just want to use our computers and be done.

no, X terminal emulators aren't login shells by default. a lot of linux users don't even use .profile, or just source it in their .bashrc, since there are DMs that don't set up the normal environment.
The GUI session on OS X seems to have its own methods for setting up an environment that are incompatible with the shell, so terminals must need to launch login to source .profile by default, barring the typical '. .profile' hack.
