No, I learned early not to fall for the nostalgia meme. Every decade has its own faggots who just so happen to call the decade they were kids in the "golden era" and everything before is dinosaur dinosaur dinosaur and everything after is kid kid kid kid.

I love using old tech for a while for old games but sticking with it to be a vocal exhibitionist hipster and try to pretend it's relevant because you can still do one modern task only leads to being the token psuedo-old bitter fuck that noone wants to work with.

I swear I've seen every variation of this for a 5 year basis.

that'll take up to 8 (4x2) but 4GB ddr2 sticks are hella expensive. Not rare, just expensive.
>>

average life of a desktop is 5 years

average life of a smartphone is 1 year

So I'm not totally retarded for thinking $80 is expensive for 4gb of outdated RAM?
If I want to keep gaming on this thing is it worth dropping the cash, or are there alternatives?
>>
>>51275146
same. so many games play great on it and a used slim is $100 right now
>>
>>51275172
>So I'm not totally retarded for thinking $80 is expensive for 4gb of outdated RAM?
Correct. You buy it if the money doesn't matter.
>If I want to keep gaming on this thing is it worth dropping the cash, or are there alternatives?
"worth it" is a funny thing. Personally, I'm a believer in the devil you know. Upgrading is never as cost effective or easy as you think it will be... Others will disagree, and they have their points.
DDR2 is fucking old. But I have 8GB in two Core2Duo laptops. I also have 64GB in a Xeon desktop, so I'm a hypocrite both ways.
>>
>>51275218
Okay simpler question because like I said I'm a PC retard
Is there an alternative if I want more RAM, or am I stuck with buying more of what I got?
Can I mix ram as long as it's all ddr2?
>>
>>51275240
most gaming and workstation motherboards I've worked with will accept mixed types of memory for example different clock speeds and will simply underclock all of the other ones. Consumer motherboards such as ones found in average prebuilts will not work and post beep
>>
>>51275240
>Can I mix ram as long as it's all ddr2?
You can mix RAM. The computer will generally take the lowest common denominator of the lot timing-wise. You can put different sizes on different channels without wasting it (though the mobo will still often use the slowest timing of any of the sticks for all of them).
>>
>>51275265
>>51275268
Like the other anon says, all bets are off on cheap mobos tho.
>>
>>51275279
>>51275268
>>51275265
One last question: how do I make sure I get ones with the right layout of all the pins?
>>
>>51275351
What do you mean by this? I've never seen any form of "DDR2" that isn't DDR2 just at different clock speeds, voltages, or sizes, or if you get into servers ECC or not. There is DDR2 laptop, and DDR2 desktop.
>>
>>51275387
I mean my RAM had a different [in layout/placement then the RAM my friend brought over to try.
I didn't check then, but would this just be because his was ddr3 or something?
>>
>>51275351
There's desktop DDR2 (DIMMS) and laptop DDR2 (SODIMM). That's it.
>>
>>51275408
Yes. Read the label next time. It will either say DDR_ or PC_-, PC2- is DDR2 and PC3- is DDR3. If it doesn't say either look up the model number or chip number in google and it will say it somewhere.
>>
>>51275408
>but would this just be because his was ddr3 or something?
Yep. DDR2 and DDR3 aren't backwards compatible and won't physically fit in each other's slots. Same goes for every other RAM standard.

Naw, was already old and cranky by then. You just flip a switch and it boots? That's not a real computer. Real computers, you had to toggle the bootstrap sequence into the front panel to get to the point you could talk to the drum storage. And you had to do it every fucking time there was a lightning strike within 50 miles.

Once the PDP was up, you had the relative luxury of coding on hardcopy line printer terminals. In the 80s, on a whim, I decided to write a hardcopy windowing system. It printed a new page for every UI update. You know, just to waste paper because fuck you. My mama raised me to be an axle greaser.

(And if you get that reference, I'm impressed and we should get a beer sometime)

Not really, but my next setup will incorporate a good deal of it older tech. New stuff cost too much relative to what it can do for how I use it. Still need some newer parts (~2010) for stupid compatibility reasons.

(stupid pointless upgrades the break everything ... #$^^#%#@%^@^&#).

My back up system is made entirely from the early 1990s and has been worth it weight in gold for the value it has made.

Including a direct floppy drive that made people laugh at me till I used it to resurrect a system with over $40,000 in equipment that everyone said was beyond saving, which I saved. Still got 5 unused floppies for when things get really bad.
>>
>>51275845
Nice, but you need to correct a few thing in it to make this image more believable.
>>
>>51275162

Those numbers seem extremely low no? (well maybe not with the rate of how fast tech is progressing.)

2 years for the majority of us who are on a contract for our smartphones.

I'm personally looking to squeeze 7 years out of my desktop, don't know how far tech will go in that time.

I've gotten close to 5 years on my laptop, but that went to shit quickly once I got my desktop.
>>
>>51275619
Don't really see the point.

They're a bit more than $12 where i live and the only feature i might use is the DVD-RW. My X60s isn't portable at all since the battery died and I gutted it while I've got enough ports through the hub on my monitor.

Pretty sure this raises the screen higher as well which was the reason I got it though that's a bit of a moot point with an external monitor.

They're worth $45-$50 just in the gold content, too. It sucks, they're already rare enough since they were mega expensive, especially the 512k-1M variants, and they're really fascinating chips both physically and architecturally. It took all of Intel's manufacturing might to push them out in semi-reasonable numbers.

The second time I opened the image the resolution was much lower to the point of having a comical level of pixelation. I assumed you did this intentionally, as reducing resolution is a common trick to hide photo editing mistakes. I was just wonder how you changed it after you posted it on 4chan.

Also for starters the clock discrepancy means the image is fake or you are posting from a very small number of locations. As Santo Antão is one the the very few locations that could actually make this happen. And don't get me started on the other things. I grew up on macs I know how they look.

The image was saved as interlaced, so low res would indicate you didn't get the full image, or possibly there's a bug in the image, certainly possible since it was made by Corel Photo Paint 8 which came out less than a year after the PNG standard came out.

Ever find any decent GBA emulators for the PSP-1000? I tried playing Golden Sun on one in the past and it ran like complete ass.
>>
>>51279284
I've been using some version of GPSP Kai or something from years ago. I don't think there's been a GBA PSP emulator with link play
>>
>>51279284
The issue is the PSP-1000 has only 32MB of RAM, unlike 2000/3000 with 64MB. Not that GBA emulation is amazing on any other PSPs anyways, but Golden Sun happens to be one of those special games when it comes to GBA emulation unfortunately.

I use mine as a portable PS1 knowing this. At least it works pretty fine for that purpose, can't find anything more convenient. Only thing I can't stand playing there is FFIX because it's slightly slower than the original platform and the game is already a slowfest.

And I'm back from last night to see the same shit 10 psuedo-oldfag pics taken by 25 year olds pretending to be 50 with the same "real computer" psuedo-arguments.

I am so so glad to be called a kid now, I would rather hear KID KID KID from someone every day than be the same old bitter fuck unable to enjoy anything new. I definitely learned from someone else's mistake before doing this myself.

But 1987-2007 was literally the golden age, objectively speaking and void of any subjective bias. Before 1987 there were no IBM PC compatibles made by third parties and stuff was much primitive in general, and after 2007 tech went to shit with iPhone, Vista, Faecesbook, Web 2.0, spyware/surveillance explosion etc.

So everyone should adopt and embrace garbage quality hardware, chiclet keyboards, walled-in gardens/closed ecosystems, openly spyware/surveillance operating systems, user interfaces that are more geared towards mobile than desktop computers, subscription-based "software as a service" business models, storing personal files and data in "the cloud" where corps and govs alike can snoop on anything freely, virtual exhibitionism via "social networks", etc. etc. just because it's "modern"? Good goy, that's what they actually want you to believe.

I use this guy nearly every day. My mother got him as a gift when she entered the university in late 70s from my grandfather. I have a T61p as my only computer, but desu I was happier with the older models with 4:3 display and no windows keys. There's nothing new on the horizon that I find exciting or even remotely interesting. Heck, I'd even rather have one of those OLPC things, at least they seem built to last. The computer industry is all retarded now, with all those tablet crap and bigass clown phones. Also, botnet everyfuckingwhere.

This. I'm trying to get >>51277834 running just because using it feels so much better than my Sony.
Quality keyboard. Accurate trackpad, nipplemouse. Solid and firm build quality, the screen doesn't rock back and forth when you touch any part of the laptop.

New hardware might perform better, but they just keep finding cheaper and cheaper ways of making it.
