not really, in i3 if you have 2 monitors you can have 2 workspaces at a time, workspace 1 on monitor 1 and workspace 2 on monitor 2 and then if you are focused on monitor 2 and switch to workspace 3, then workspace 1 will still be on monitor 1 and workspace 3 will be on monitor 2 whereas if you're on openbox then it will consider both monitors as a single workspace so if you switch to workspace 2 then everything you had on monitor 1 and 2 is gone.
