Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
----
No news.
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

OK /g/, you successfully trolled me into buying a T420.

Now how do I get used to the clit mouse?
That shit is harder than I expected.

If it's a business, make fucking SURE you get the upgraded screens. As an employee, I don't give a shit about the RAM or the processor, but when my company foisted a 1366x768 T540p on me, I just about shit myself. Especially since I'm used to dealing with Excel sheets on my 1920x1200 W510.

Also, keyboards matter. You have no idea how much we appreciate good keyboards. Numpads are also real usefulffeatures.

Just push that bitch in the direction you want it to go, don't be overly careful with it. The harder you push, the faster it goes.

I did a little bit of research and found that shit sent through the Global Shipping Program tends to sort of disappear in Erlanger, Kentucky (where my package is listed as "delivered") and then sort of re-appear again a few days later. Unless you really know what you're getting into, an X301 as a daily driver isn't worth it because ULV Core2 and still middling battery life for today's standards
Unless you're really that weak (if skinny azns can carry gaymen laptops up the hill that UNSW sits on, you should be fine), a T420 shouldn't be too much to carry. As for battery life, on the T420, a tick under 1 hour per cell (or about an hour if you stretch it) is reasonable. As a general guide, the X301 under stretch is similar, although its cells are smaller (6 cell is ~43Wh in the X301 vs 60Wh in the T420 and the T420 can also get 9 cells)

I don't know about the X301, but my X300 is fantastically slow with Windows 7 and moderately tolerable with Linux. The ancient low-voltage Core2Duo is marginally faster than my old Pentium 4. I'd say stop being a weak bitch and get the T420.
>>
>>51223244
oooh, get the t420s m8

I just got mine. My brother has a t420 so I've held and used both. I used the t410 before this one, and the size/weight difference is unreal. the t410 is just bulky and crazy heavy by comparison. the t420s is as thin as a macbook pro and very light, lighter than the macbook pro.

only cons are the port placement, which isn't a huge bother for me really, and the battery life, which is why I'm probably getting the ultrabay battery expansion.

4 hours from the X301 6 cell
4 hours from the T420 6 cell, maybe 5 and a bit if it's fresh and/or lightly used. But you can into 9 cell which can get you 7-8 hours too

>>51223334

Is there ANY way to get stereo mix on an X220?

I just need to know this. If there is a way, I will buy some max spec'd X220 right now. It seems like the perfect laptop, but if it doesn't have stereo-mix, I can't use it.

Also worth noting, the build quality is much better on the t420s. Everything is more solid. Speakers are very good. Display is a tad dim imo, but very sharp.

pretty lucky. Doesn't it just get to you that they go through all that effort to make a decent machine only to cheap out on the display? How hard would it be to just stick a good IPS panel on both screens and be done with it?

>>
>>51223568
It could mean literally anything if they aren't specific about where the wear and tear is. Wear on the lid is whatever; it was made to take wear and scratches, it is rubberized and rugged

The more pictures, the better, look for cracking/chipping at the corners (signs it has been dropped), look at the wear on the keyboard, the wear on the trackpad. Heavy wear on the spacebar is something to look out for, as you don't want a keyboard from somebody who types like king kong and smashes the spacebar hard like an ape.

Yeah, but it's especially shitty when they do it for a high end mobile workstation with an aux screen that anyone with half a brain can tell you will have viewing issues with TN

I'm not really sure why they cheap out on displays for business lines. Having a good screen is just as important for corporats as it is for media consumers

>>51223568
It should just be scratches, rubbed of lid edges, not firm but not loose hinges.
There shouldn't be dead pixels, usually that doesn't happen from new.

>>51223569
Yeah, its strange as the WUXGA display was nice for the W700, I mean it had a color calibrator and was used for photographers. I don't think there were 11" IPS displays at the time, and if it were an option I think the price would of been 5K rather than 4.2K for a fully spec'd unit.

With that said, the LCD is nothing compared to the Dreamcolor displays of HP's machines, I would LOVE to have an Elitebook 8740W w/ ATI graphics and an IPS display. Strange how HP had a one fan unit for their CPU/GPU and separate heatsinks. Dunno how reliable it is, but it looked decent when I had a 8730W.

I am glad Lenovo decided bring back a 17" monster, I am curious how the P series will end up like, hopefully its built like a Dell Precision and not just a gaming laptop w/ CAD/Quadro graphics and an E Series build quality.

Having worked for a company with 300 employees, I can say that they don't give a damn about the screens. They care about minimizing their costs to the maximum possible extent. The only people who get the IPS screen new from the factory are self-employed professionals or executives who feel the need to have something better than the rank-and-file employees.

When the time came to replace our aging fleet of 1280x800 T400s, we almost ordered a bunch of 1366x768 T430s before one of the managers decided we should get L430s instead because "they're cheaper". And these are the people who you expect will upgrade the screens.

There's an image retention issue which you will see if you leave some black text on a white background on the screen for a few minutes and then immediately switch to a dark grey or dark green background. Same problem as the 2012 Macbooks with LG screens. The (SL)(B3) revision of the screen is supposed to not have this problem but I can't confirm that as I've never seen one.

I recently bought a x220 tablet with core i5. I must say I'm pretty happy with it. I plan to use it for photoshop and some other 2d graphics software. I'll upgrade the hdd to ssd soon and already upgraded ram from 4gigs to 8gigs(at least for now, maybe 16 in the future)

It has a fairly good battery on it which goes about 4 hours on minimal use. it's in very very good condition too.

So can I use it with power cord plugged in when battery installed? Will it damage battery if I keep it on power all the time?

and currently it has win7 pro on it, I'm gonna migrate to a ssd when I get one. Do you recommend migration or clean install win 7 pro?

also I'd like to install linux on it too: I have gentoo in mind but I'm scared. I really like the idea of having the most custom OS but can I really do it myself? Because I'm not a regular linux user; but I installed and am using lubuntu, crunchbang and centos7 on some other machines for server use (or very rarely as a dual boot win).

What do you recommend?

T4xxs' also tend to run hotter because of the thinner metal body, especially with a dGPU
>>
>>51229275
Yeah, if you're constantly keeping the battery charged up over the long run it will get damaged. I suppose you could just take the battery out and use the laptop on AC only, but I never liked doing this because either I would forget the battery at home when I had to go somewhere in a hurry, or dust would collect in the battery bay, or my laptop would shut down during a power outage. It's better just to change the charging properties IMO.

>>51229795
My T410s idles at about 55 c with the slowest CPU option (i5-520M) and no dGPU. I'd hate to see what this thing is like with the fastest CPU. I hope they upgraded the cooling for the T420s when they threw in nVidia "house fire special" cards.

Basically what the other guy said, they're just not that portable. I mean, most of the older-ish thinkpads are heavy and bulky, but the W520 seems just too bulky to be portable.

The t410 is heavy and bulky but manageable. The t420 is kinda bulky by today's standards but still much lighter and manageable. The "s" series are obviously much better in regards to weight and portablility. The t420s is about as thin but lighter than the MBP as you can see here >>51219921

the pic related was the picture from the ad and it comes with "windows 7 ult" kek

http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/sys/5296383138.html

I thinking about low balling him to give me both for $50.
>>
>>51225650
how do i do that
>>
How do/could I disable that awful beep that Lenovo makes activate whenever I go to BIOS? I checked BIOS itself and the beep options only refer to other instances of beeping.
>>
>>51230721
kek, yeah so it doesn't come with an OEM key, I'd say lowball in person, ask if Win7 is genuine, and if you can get the matching COA with it, coz if its not its pirated and the fuck was too derp/lazy to install home premium.

I am presuming you are asking about the T4x WiFi?

Is it really that bad? It seems the picture quality has a lot to do with how it looks and i see some dust too. But then again who knows.

they will care about the keyboard once they use one that's actually good

>have the x220 with 9 cell and IPS

t420s battery life and thickness compared? i get 8-10 hours on my 220
>>
Anyone here ever use a ThinkCentre desktop?

My old community center had TCs with WinXP/98 Dual booted and i just get so nostalgic thinking about them.

Definitely thicker, and definitely better battery life. my t420s gets about 3 hours, which isn't total dogshit but could be better. It may get up to 4-5 hours with the ultrabay batter expansion though.

I did, I think they feel and look annoying.
>>

The battery in that picture is almost out. It's makin me nervous.

whats the battery life like???

great
>>
Dear fellow T420 poorfags, what equally cheap ass ram did you get for your dankpad?
>>
>>51230473
The one benefit to the W520 is it's extremely easy to find 1920x1080 ones. Never, ever buy 1600x900, completely defeats the purpose of having a W series. Just get a T420 if you're planning to do that resolution (since it's also pointless getting a 15.6" laptop with the resolution of a 14" one).

>>51231405
It looks a little worn, but that's the price of getting an i7-2760M and a Quadro 2000M for $450.

I am an older T420s owner. Fucking love this thing. Best machine for me. Only shame is the meh TN screen. Battery life isn't superb but good enough for my basic mobile use. I always have it plugged in whenever I am working on it though so battery life was never a big issue for me.

>>51233634
It comes with a 4GB stick, I just put in another 4GB for something like $20
>>
Stupid question but how long did it take you guys to get use to your clitmouse? I tried my dad's T510 and I felt like a downy using it. I ordered a x200 tablet a few days ago. Should arrive on monday.
>>
What is the word on t-series?

I always had small laptops with humble specs so I don't feel comfortable buying a large computer.
>>
>>51234198
My first laptop was a Thinkpad T21, which I got from my dad. Thing didn't even have a trackpad, so you HAD to use the clitmouse. It was pretty easy for me to learn, took about 2-3 days to get used to it from what I recall, but then again you learn this shit quicker when you're young, and at the time I had never used a laptop touchpad before, so I wasn't "used" to anything else. I'd say give it 6-8 days before it starts feeling natural.
>>
Should I be wary of an eBay ad for a ThinkPad that only says "Powers on and boots to BIOS"?

Could that mean it's passworded?
>>
>>51234531
That just means it is functional.

It could still have a BIOS password still and it could not have an OS or hard drive.

>>51234198
probably a day or two

on another note, im graduating college in the spring and i feel like rewarding myself by going shopping. ive given myself a budget and after buying new clothes, ive decided to buy a new laptop. ive had a t430 in the past, but it was dropped into a pool. since then ive been getting by with a chromebook.

I have around $1700 CAD to spend, which is around $1300 USD

what's the best Thinkpad I can get?

and if you're recommending a macbook pro, i already have one for work. for work its okay, but for personal use id rather get a thinkpad.
>>
bought a used 2011 thinkpad edge with an i3 370m

did i fuck up

9 cell battery only charges to 36% bought a new battery and hopefully it's better :)

Why do older Chinkpad batteries only charge to a certain percentage?
Are bad cells being cutoff from being recharged?

Looking to buy a W series. If I'm mostly using my Thinkpad to make massive Excel sheets and watch Cambodian puppetry, would it be best to get a quad-core i7, or save some money and get a dual-core with a higher clock rate?
>>
>>51235937
I think quad core models only let you get to get to use all four slots for ram but I may be wrong
