The European probably is unlocked. Its the carriers that lock it down usually so buying an unlocked one from amazon or somewhere will be fine. For example, if I had more money I would have bought the phone from T-Mobile then put my at&t Sim card in it, since T-Mobile doesn't lock down their phones.

Yes, it's generally a good thing to have SD card support. Look at the backlash from the S6 announcement. It's useful.
However, it isn't essential. Coming from the owner of several Nexus phones and now a Moto X 2014, you can definitely live without it.
