Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies), we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to Linux as your new home and working on making it feel the way you want it.

>Recommended for beginners:
-Ubuntu MATE
-Debian (For Broadcom devices, use an ISO that includes non-free firmware)
-openSUSE
-LinuxMint (a.k.a Ubuntu LTS + Cinnamon)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

>like lubuntu enough to keep coming back to it even after trying other distros but it has it's faults

there are a couple things that I would like to know,

is there a sound icon I can switch to? it's kinda annoying when I open up the sound slider to change the volume and forget that I have to click it again, and it won't auto-hide if I go back to my browser or game or irc client.

the tiny oval scroll bar, is there a way to make the bar wider? or else change it to a different scrollbar? my mouse wheel isn't a wheel so much as the Flick-It! end from a Bop-It! EXTREME! and it's finickey and not helpful for fine scrolling for centering those xtube and videos.toypics videos and its thin profile in the scroll area makes it hard to click and drag when I'm not conpletely focused on it

when you install arch, do lsblk, get the drive name
then do
parted /dev/drivename print

look for an efi partition. if there is one this is where it becomes really important.

you need to mount that partition as your boot partiton onto your arch install.

Then install grub, go on the arch wiki for grub, theres a long command for installing and mention of efisomthingmngr you need too.

also when you go to boot into the arch usb, makes sure you boot into it in uefi mode. there should be two options. if you just boot the usb you wont have the uefi variables.

I hope this helps. if you dont have a efi partition/esp partition that means windows is using legacy, then you have to do some other shit.

To view partitions and volumes on Windows Operating System (OS), Disk Management is the preferred tool, which helps to see if the drive is recognized and has one or more partitions. To do this, follow the steps below: Click on Start (7, Vista, XP). On windows 8, right-click on the bottom-left corner of the screen.

boot into windows and do that, show me a picture.

it does, the efi thing is just a type. the bootloader will create the efi dir.

Ubuntu 14.04 on an old dell optiplex desktop. The suspend mode just doesn't work - the monitor goes off, but the fans and hdd are still spinning. To make matters worse, while the monitor is blank, the keyboard and power button doesn't work so I would have to pull the plug and turn it back on again. What do?

it's mostly ideological reasons that people dislike systemd. the scope of the project at this point has amounted to a monolithic subkernel, absorbing features an init system never needed to touch. it creates a large attack surface and dense codebase that makes it difficult for any newcomer to adequately pick apart what's wrong and fix it themselves if they were so inclined. the reason for its mass adoption is a calculated push by a multi-billion dollar company in an effort to "standardize" the userland to make enterprise Linux a more palatable and easier sell and likely because it will give them greater overall control of the ecosystem.

systemd works, but i don't want it on my box, and i still have that choice for now which is nice, but its worming itself into other major projects where there's no real reason for it to be a dependency, which is alarming. it will become harder and harder to avoid if your desire is to avoid it. i personally don't want something handling the decryption of my luks drives also handling my network access in one "tidy" package, i'm not sure how that's supposed to be appealing.

it can make your life appear simpler if you're new to linux, it's easy to see why nothing is wrong on the surface when you look at its concept, but if you've been around to see its scope creep and intent blatantly shift to go far beyond the boundaries in which it was initially pitched, you might see why some people are against it.

Really quick, i'm tring to install openCV 3 on Mint 17 and I keep getting the error at

>Linking CXX shared library ../../lib/libopencv_imgproc.so

>/usr/bin/ld: ../../../3rdparty/ippicv/unpack/ippicv_lnx/lib/ia32/libippicv.a(jmp_ippiResizeGetBufferSize_16s_as.s.o): relocation R_386_GOTOFF against undefined symbol `ippicvJumpIndexForMergedLibs' can not be used when making a shared object

I was told

>I resolved this issue and thought I should answer my own question just in case someone else trips across this.
>Apparently, the opencv lib will not build properly when you specify a shared lib build. When using cmake-gui, you must NOT set this option:
>BUILD_SHARED_LIBS
>By disabling this option, the opencv lib built and installed just fine

But this hasn't helped me at all or I'm not disabling the sharing properly. I'm just doing -D BUILD_SHARED_LIBS=FALSE but i've also tried it as OFF, and NO. I'm not really sure how to use CMake properly.

I went to the CMake documentation but it just says

>Global flag to cause add_library to create shared libraries if on.
>If present and true, this will cause all libraries to be built shared unless the library was explicitly added as a static library. This variable is often added to projects as an OPTION so that each user of a project can decide if they want to build the project using shared or static libraries.

and doesn't actually say how to turn it on and off.

I just finished watching Linus Torvalds' talk at Debconf and I'm wondering:

Why do distros need to do packages?

Is there some good reason that most programs can't just work the same on different distros? I can pull a github repo and once the dependencies are installed, I've almost always been able to get the program to run.

I can understand having different binaries for different architectures obviously, but I really don't see how much one flavour of linux can vary from the next.

Can anyone shed any light on it?

>I can pull a github repo and once the dependencies are installed
Packages are designed exactly to dodge that.
>>
>>51920900
Two reasons
One, as you mentioned:
>once the dependencies are installed
You need to dependency management for a system. Packages specify dependencies in a straightforward way.

Two:
Distributions customize packages for a variety of reasons, from compatibility issues to security issues, etc.

Its unreasonable to grab everything from github and do the package management yourself for everything; this will get so complicated so quickly that your system will be unusable if you want to keep it updated.

Ok, but I still don't understand why each distro needs to do its own packages. It seems like an awful lot of work gets duplicated to maintain a package (actually, more than one) for each distro. But is there some technical reason why they can't use the same packages, besides different package managers?
>>
>>51920900
Doing this for the odd program of the week is all fine and dandy, but hainvg to manage the independent dependences of every single program you use is hell.

Ah, that?
That's mostly the kinks of each distro. This one uses memory manager A, so this little change to the code will make it run faster. This other one uses a diferent boot manager, so this permissions manager won't work quite right if I don't change code block A for code block B.

Hey,

In most Linux distros that I've installed, the resolution is almost always stuck to 800x600, and 1024x1000 or so, generally small resolutions that are 4:3

In Linux Mint, more non 4:3 options are provided, but the smallest one that is 16:9 is 1920x1080, my laptop's resolution is 1366x768.

Generally when using Oracle VM, I've always had this issue with screen resolution. The only OS I've not had this issue with at some point is Windows XP.

I'm currently using Elementary OS as my main install, (Yes yes, I know, It sucks, looks like mac, etc etc, I can't rice well and it's the most visually pleasing OS I can manage with my skill level), and running Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa in Oracle VM VirtualBox.
>>
>>51924751
Elementary is broken at its best, Mint might be the best choice.
>>
>>51924780
I'm not dedicated to Elementary OS, there are literally two things that I like about it, and only two things.

1) The File Manager allows me to color code files and folders, the only feature of Mac OS X that I liked over Windows.

2) I can't seem to rice anything without fucking breaking it, and I like how Elementary OS looks. Mint is nice, I like Ubuntu and by extension Linux Mint since they're supported well, but I'm tired of having do a thousand things to fix my computer every time I fuck up.

So, I'm currently testing out distros in VirtualBox, trying to learn and fuck things up in the safety of "Oh well, guess I'll try again" instead of "Fuck, where's a goddamn USB drive, need to make another installer"

Issue is, it's trying my patience to have to deal with two 4:3 aspect ratios smaller than my monitor. That's what I need to fix, but it's a relatively common problems among all distros, and even when I run them under Windows's edition of VirtualBox.
>>
>>51924846
Seriously, I could bitch about so many things I hate about Elementary OS. Other than color coding, it's File Manger sucks dick, shit that just works in proper Ubuntu is broken on it, the Devs are pedantic assholes who wish to emulate Apple in more than just aesthetics, the list goes on and on.

Couple of questions, all about a central thing:

1) How do I fix default line spacing/padding in Chromium? 4chan just looks ugly as hell with all this wasted space everywhere.

2) I'd switch from Chromium, but I enjoy using the botnet known as Netflix. Netflix-desktop seems outdated in the AUR (although I've yet to try it), so is there any way of using Netflix without Chromium?
>>
>>51925345
lol
>>
>>51925058
What am I trying to prove?

You basically said there was no reason to use Linux if you don't want free software, and that I should be using Windows.

Mac OS X is also not free software, and people use it over Windows. There are reasons to use Linux that don't have to do with its free aspects.

Namely, no cost. I don't have to worry about having serial keys, or wondering if the OS will be tied to my hardware somehow, I can just reinstall it without worry, on all my devices.

Also, having a free operating system is much more important than free software. I can elect to install only free software on my free OS. With Windows, from the very start you are fucked.

So that's how I like it better. Linux can be free, and I can choose how much I trust select companies. So, what exactly was your point?
>>
>>51923320
>Centos is using symlink for /bin /lib /lib64 to link them under /usr. My question is why are they doing this?
those were originally split because /usr was traditionally on a separate partition, and if it failed to mount for some reason you'd then have a 100% worthless system instead of just a mostly worthless system. Essential files were stored on the same drive or partition as /, in /bin, /lib, /lib64, or whatever

I'd have to guess that with the proliferation of live-boot distros and reliable hardware this just isn't a problem anymore, but there are still systems set up to look at /bin and /lib. It's still common to split / and /usr, and it's also pretty common for / to be fairly small. Having these files split up into multiple directories is actually more of a pain in the ass when there's no real reason for it anymore. Is your lib in /lib or /usr/lib?

>Can I do the same to get rid of some of the configuration files and organize them in a better way that I like without ruining everything? Would any software that is going to look at the symbolic link be able to find the files?
Not really sure what you mean by this, but yes, that's what symlinks do. Whenever something looks at /lib/sym_link, it just points it to another location, and the program looks in the new location for the file. There are some gotchas so what you seem to want to do is probably a bad idea but it's possible.
>>
>>51925436
>1) How do I fix default line spacing/padding in Chromium? 4chan just looks ugly as hell with all this wasted space everywhere.

Welp, guess I halfway fixed it. For 4chan, anyway.

Using 4chan-X, I just put
body {
line-height: 1.2em;
}

into Custom CSS. And it's much nicer.

Still not a perfect solution for default behavior, but oh well.
>>
>>51925689
But Windows 10 is also free.

If OS X is not free, you can always pirate it and build a hackintosh.
>>
>>51925771
Windows 10 is free to upgrade to for the first year if you're already running Windows 7 or 8.1

So that's only a solution for the first year, and if you were already a consumer of Windows. Also, yes, if you steal the product, it then becomes free.

So that's a really shitty argument.

Having / ad /home on separate partitions is generally recommended. You can easily do a fresh install without having to worry about your personal files and configs.
>>
>>51926224

>>
>>51926182
It's actually pretty simple and less weird than you think.

If you don't have any other partitions for the setup, / is mounted and everything under it is included.

If you have other partitions with stuff on them (/home, /boot, etc.), their contents won't be on the same partition as /. In other words, the partition with / can be thought of as the "main" partition, and every other partition just takes away from that main partition.

How does one manage drivers properly on Linux distros?

The chink laptop I have uses Conexant for audio but since that stuff isn't supported properly, the result is mechanical noise from the headphones of all types when set to max and setting the volume down simply makes them less noticable.

I tried looking for solutions and came by Linuxant which basically provides conexant drivers compatible with Linux.
Installed the package and the sound worked wonderfully.

However, after I turned the machine back on later that day, the sound returned to its previous awful state and no matter how much I've tried re-installing these things or forcing Alsa/Libaudio, nothing worked.

How is it that it fixed the problem then but it does nothing now?
