The 980 costs now as the 970 before sale. That means the 980 was always SUPER OVERPRICED or there is some catch. The only thing which holds me atm back is the black doesn't look good in everything else white.
Pls /g/ I know you are all enthusiastic about 1080 vs 480, but please help me decide which one. My target is to play 1080@60fps in the next few years without having to OC or tinker.
Also this shop of mine changes costs crazy without warning. Is this buy of year for me or no?

That's not really that lofty of a goal.
Drop ~$450 and run two 970's in SLI or a 980ti and you'll be fine.
Or
Drop $500 and get a decently-cooled 1070.
Either way, now (today) is probably the worst possible time to go GPU shopping. The 9-series models are just now beginning to come down in price, and some sellers are selling out even without price cuts because the 10-series is so scarce.
You'll be able to get a 980ti for $350 in a couple of weeks once the 10's flood the shelves. I mean the 1070 outperforms the 980ti and it costs less right out of the factory. In a few weeks no one in their right mind will be buying them anymore.

What's weird is that it's surprisingly cheap. If you want to be "all set for the next few years" but feel like $450 is overpriced, I don't know what to tell you.

I'll just assume you're talking about when you play GTA V?
I never got below 60fps on gta v with 970s in sli. High-to-ultra settings, too. Reel in the draw distance setting if you're getting below 60, or stop using 4k texture mods etc.
Also the one thing that really stuck out to me in that game is how insanely taxing the fucking 'grass' setting is. Turn off v-sync to test this: Bring the grass setting down from high to medium or low and you'll not only not notice the difference in textures at all, but you'll also go from 70fps to >100 instantly.

Only happens when I zoom in on areas I have a shit ton of props. It's the 3.5+3.5 more than my 6700. Doesn't bother me enough to get 1080x2 which is my only real upgrade path.

Not to mention, you can OC 980ti about 20-30%, meanwhile you can only do 1070 about 10-15%.

I have inspected some charts and prices.
And you guys are right.
So my strategy now is to wait when some 980ti will drop to some very cheap price, or when the 1070 will become available in the "MSRP" price, preferably in white color and not the Founders Edition :-)
It seems like the market with GPUs will have price downfall sooner or later. I just didn't even think that difference between "same number xx70" in two series would be so high. Still this doesn't change the fact that 970 is now half the price the 1070.
