>be me
>80kg / 176lbs
>just beginning to cut so start counting macros
>turns out I eat ~180g of protein everyday without any supplements
>just meat, eggs, fish and yoghurts, distributed throughout the day with a buttload of veggies
>also get good micros that are absent in protein powders

How did you feel when you first realised that protein powders are a meme?
>>
meat and fish aren't that cheap, and it's more difficult to prepare. I don't think anyone is saying protein powder is preferable to a normal diet, it's just more convenient and sometimes cheaper depending on the protein source you're replacing.
>>
>>36858789
>duh
>>
>>36858789
turns out, if you are not retarded with what you eat it is possible to avoid protein powder.
>>
Speak for yourself, OP. I make my own gainer shake every day, so protein powder is a staple in my diet.
>>
>>36858806

Yeah its all true, my point is that a guy with an overall healthy diet, who also doesnt restrict calories, should be able to get close to 1g/lb just from food, and an excess of protein is also dangerous.
Taking protein powder without tracking your macros may easily get you way over the healthy levels.
>>
>>36858858
Samefag
Especially if you consider that on a package it usually says to take 2, sometimes even three "portions" a day, which roughly translstes to 60-90g of pure protein. It is pretty much bound to bring any guy with an overall protein rich diet over this popular threshold of 1g/lb.
>>
>>36858789
its not a meme if ur poor
fish is 30-40 euro per kg here and chicken is expensive too
the cheapest protein source here is protein powder and mozzarella
>>
>>36858858
You can have a healthy diet and use a protein supplement. There's nothing wrong with whey protein and you if you use protein powder you can easily track so you don't overshoot on protein grams
>>
>>36858846
this

shit is by far the cheapest source

get to fuck with this protein is a meme meme

It's pretty much fake protein.

Shit I might just give up my Canadian citizenship and move to America if it doesn't go down the drain after elections

Best I can usually find is 3.99/lb for fresh, frozen breasts have a shit consistency and I feel like they are filled with water
>>
>>36858789
Yes, at 180g a day, it's easy to hit. Especially if you've got time and money to do so. Hell, even a diet of mostly egg whites is better than protein powders. But when you're a busy motherfucker, having a ready source of protein in a shaker bottle that you can just add water to on your way out of the gym is really fucking handy.

Should we get our protein from whole foods? yeah, in a perfect world.
>>
Ingesting too much protein is not terribly harmful, unless you WAY WAY overdose, and don't drink enough water with it. I do get really dry shits from it from time to time, though.

Hitting protein goals without supplements is possible for most people, but not always the most practical or most economical option, as others have pointed out.

Another consideration can be that you get a different profile from protein powder than from the food you normally eat. E.g. the added BCAA present in some protein supplements may be beneficial, even if you're already getting enough protein from natural sources.

you need like 4g/lb of protein for it to be actually harmful.

also, whey will keep your plasma AA levels high longer than meat.

I'm not a soy hater by any means, but there is enough evidence that the cholesterol in red meat or egg yolks assists testosterone production. So I'm going to stick with those.

>>
>>36859853

So unless I supplement that with egg whites, protein powder or chicken breast, that's not going to come close to satisfying my macros

>>

You don't get enough fiber

>>36859883

Half the carbs are fiber even
>>
>>36859907
Didn't see that, that's pretty good indeed.

I'm trying to go for a ~40/40/20 protein/fat/carbs split though, and even then lentils are a bit too high in carbs for my taste. They could be a side-dish along with chicken breast or egg though. Probs gonna try it out sometimes.
>>
>>36859934

Yeah, I don't get all of my protein from lentils but they're a great addition to a diet and arguably the healthiest source of protein
>>
>>36859907
what? i get 40g of fiber a day. if i were to take my 200g of protein a day from lentils id get 100 grams of fiber which is way too much. if you take into account lentils' shitty aminoacid profile then id have to eat even more of that shit

but yeah, in small doses lentils are great.
>>
>>36859934
I add ground beef or turkey to my lentils. It makes them taste better, and brings the macros in-line with my goals.
>>
>>36859934

There's practically no such thing as too much fiber from food, and 40g isn't amazing

>turns out I need to go to school and a local store

How did you feel when you first realised that cars are a meme?
>>
>>36860006
I have not really been able to find any definitive advice on what the carbs/fat split should be, so I just arbitrarily decided on that. Feel free to make an argument for something else, I'm certainly willing to listen.

Most people just seem to say "get your protein, then the rest is kinda whatever."
>>
>>36860013
>There's practically no such thing as too much fiber from food
yes there is. its not that hard to get ur ass in surgery from too much fiber
>and 40g isn't amazing
its enough per every recommendation ever
>>

I would say go up in carbs so you can include some healthier foods in your diet, like fruits and oats
>>
>>36860073

>yes there is. its not that hard to get ur ass in surgery from too much fiber

You're talking about fiber supplements, not food. Is that what you get your fiber from?

>its enough

It's barely above the minimum recommended amount

implying there is a "suitable" or "maximum" recommended amount. 10g of fiber per 1k kcal is another common guideline. im perfectly fine, dude. no point getting any more.

Clogged colons happen when you megadose on fiber supplements like metamucil with no water. That's not something that happens when you eat food that has fiber.

You could definitely benefit from more fiber, especially if you're getting yours from supplements now.

https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&q=High+dietary+fiber+intake+prevents+stroke+at+a+population+level.&btnG=&as_sdt=1%2C19&as_sdtp=

It's just powdered cellulose that can get clumpy if you don't add enough water. It's not like fiber in food that gets digested with everything else.

Meat doesn't, veggies do, but you need more than just vegetables in your diet. Diets low in fruit are responsible for more deaths/diseases globally than any other nutritional aspect, including low vegetable intake.
>>
>>36858789
Except when you cut you need more than 1 g per lb.. and i dont know about you but there comes a point in my day when i dont want to eat even more chicken than ive already ate to reach 246 g of protein..... sometimes we dont have time to sit down and eat when we could just drink it in seconds.
>>
>>36860526
not that guy, but that's per kg, not per lb. At 80kg (176lb) that'll be 200g/day. That's a lot, but not unreasonable. It's 1.1g/lb.

seriously, 1,5g/kg of protein is ok provided all of that is from optimal sources. that doesnt happen unless you eat nothing but meat/whey, otherwise there's no way you're getting 3-4 grams of leucine each meal and youre thus missing out on MPS.

Is Myprotein good? Is their USA service alright? Do they ship to the states fast?

I wanna go with Optimum Nutrition's whey but MP's is basically half the cost (per 30g protein, ON is 59c, MP is 33c) might just pick up one of both to compare...
>>
>>36860735
Whoa nevermind, I double-checked and I calculated the ON price thinking the calories (120) were the servings in a bag (74). The real price breaks down to 96c per 30g protein.

Fuck that I'm ordering as much myprotein as I can. Some quick googling reveals they're a good company

How is that a meme? Not everyone is a NEET that can be at home cooking and cleaning up multiple meals a day.
