It literally just comes down to genetic differences in tastebuds. I've always been able to drink straight liqueurs with hardly any burn, and I absolutely love the taste of them, it's like a whole taste of its own to me that I crave. Also the only beers I really enjoy are usually super dark or high in alcohol percent, my favorite is Hercules double ipa.
But then on the flip side, sweet stuff has made me want to throw up my whole life. I can't eat candy, or things like frosting. And my friend gave me a sip of her super sugary cocktail the other night and it literally gave me the urge to puke for a good 10 minutes. So that's why I think it really comes down to genetic differences in what tastes good to certain people, though some of it may be conditioning I suppose, as I probably conditioned myself to dislike sugar to some degree. That's why I never make fun or judge people for their alcohol choices. But sugar does make hangovers much, much shittier. I would try something like vodka and sparkling water if I were you, I can't imagine that being too overpowering, and it's not too "unmanly."

It might hinder progress a bit if you get smashed regularly, but it certainly doesn't magically negate it all.
