Ehh, I'm guessing artists back then relied more on actual swords as reference. Ridiculously big swords got later popular with media such as Final Fantasy 7 and Berserk. Actually, videogames might have to do with the trend as the low pixel/polygon counts of the games meant weapons had to be rather big so they could be differentiated more easily. Also, overly muscular barbarians aren't the most relatable of characters so strength is show through the size of the weapon rather than the size of the muscles.
This is just my speculation though.

A mech suit is controlled by a person usually. Since a person's brain is in command it's probably easier to control a human shaped machine. Robots on the other hand don't make sense to me unless they are operating human equipment designed for a human body.

I used to play Warhammer and I noticed there was a real size creep i weaponry there too. In the early 90s guns were gun-sized and swords/hammers/axes were about real-life proportions. About 10 years later pistols are now the size of breeze-blocks and close combat weapons might as well be dogshit if they're not at least the same height as the character holding them.
