Going to my first meet tonight to spectate!

Any things I should keep an eye out for?

get an eye for the rules, especially if these are the same judges that are likely to be at your meet. make sure you understand what squat depth looks like, how long the bench pauses are, what a deadlift lockout looks like, etc.

this is my program for the next couple of months if anyone is interested. might have to drop the %s for pause deadlifts and block pulls, and might need to increase them for front squats (since my front squat is untrained). also i'm going to try to take accessories more seriously this time around.

Lads I have a problem. I tried a belt for the first time today and I did not really like it, here's what happened:

Usually I have a really wide grip on the bar, but I could not keep the bar tight on my back without closing in my grip. No idea why.
>Stance
A wider stance felt really strong but I didn't hit depth on a couple reps. Probably why it felt strong.
>Speed
I was really slow on the descent and ascent, not on purpose but when watching the recording it seemed very slow.
>Torso
My torso position was for more upright, I couldn't really learn like I used to.
I think my belt is too big and got in the way.

I don't really like my squat with a belt. The sets definitely felt easier but it felt bad and I didn't like it.

Should I buy a smaller belt? I'm so confused on what the hell to do.

I think I saw a Supertraining video with Ed Coan in which he talked about bent rows. He said he liked to really let them stretch his upper back towards the bottom, because he felt it more that way. I liked doing that when I tried it. I don't do barbell rows very often, though.

5/3/1 has been wildly successful for me as of late. My squat game has just blown the hell up. I'm really liking only doing BBB sets for squats or bench and doing them twice a week.

I've always treated rows as a way to get my shit back in line after benching, so I really don't treat it with that much respect (Body english is fine, grip is whatever, weight is whatever); I may be the wrong person to ask, but I think you may just be over-complicating things.

leg extensions can long term lead to knee deterioration and the way it trains your muscles is not very useful except for bodybuilding. of course short term nothing might happen but after a couple months or maybe a couple years you will feel it. especially if you go heavy on them. I recommend to instead just do an additional set of squats or legpress.

No, you probably had knee pain from an accumlation of various things you do, the way you walk, how you sit and for how long each day, how often you squat, your recovery protocols etc. If your knees were 100%, and you fixed all the things damaging your knees, and routinely did leg extensions (but squats would be better) with adequate recovery, your knees would be stronger than ever.

Deficits were pretty fucking hard after the pause sets and it almost felt like I strained my left glute slightly. Definitely gonna program them in lighter next cycle.

The point is you're likely short changing yourself.

Ofc Wendler would advocate slow, steady progress, because the longer you're on it, the more you advertise it as a superior routine. Just because you're progressing for 3 years doesnt mean its a good routine if you could have done it within 6 months on another routine.

Bump up the weight, don't be a pussy. 5/3/1 is slow af progression as it is so bumping it up a touch isn't detrimental, and handling heavier weight is smart if you're a powerlifter.
