I always really liked the whole lunar core thing, but I already dress like a mod anyway.

You use needle and thread to sew it on. Unless it has an iron on backing, then you can just iron the patch on. It's real simple.

how long would it take to sew an 8x10" canvas patch on the back of a jacket by hand? or should I just buy a sewing machine

A sewing machine is gonna cost you.
Just do it by hand, it's not that hard. Duration depends on your skill, your method of sewing, the fabric of the jacket, the lining of the jacket and the fabric of the patch. A backpatch can run you up to one to two hours but it's hard to make a correct guess.
Just take a stab at it, sewing is relaxing.

Thanks! These are the first ones I've made and I'm learning.
It's some cotton-poly poplin with a smooth finish and tight weave I found at Joann's.
Doing them by hand takes a while, but lets me test a design. I work at a museum and hand-stitch clothing regularly.

btw just wanted to say that it really looks like you have very good control of a needle-- your embroideries are super crisp. I also really dig how you did the lettering in both the LIBERTY patches as well as-- and especially-- the WL 45 patch. The paint you're using seems to do well for linework but the painting top-left isn't looking so great. I'm not sure how that could be fixed

Is it possible to create a patch by stencil printing onto a piece of waterproof material?

You can stencil print technically anything, I guess. As long as you use a thick waterproof paint to stencil the material you'll be fine.
I used to stencil with thick white wallpaint onto regular canvas. My prints survived three to five washes in the washing machine before fading. So it can be done, just use the right materials.

Use anything on the second row. Those are most probable to be the right size for a sleeve patch. The ones in the top and bottom rows are at least 4" and the space shuttle one on the bottom right is even bigger.

Most of them are at least 4 inches wide. Only the first three of so are smaller. So, when you buy any online make sure you check the measurements because you might get burned on a huge patch.

I really just put them anywhere I wanted to, without overdoing it. I put >>9678698 on debranded olive messenger bag, which looks alright for what it is. And pic related is on the should of a tan mountain parka.
Just keep it to a max of two patches per jacket if you ask me. Rule number one is to steer clear from the "metal battle jacket" look.
