Most people at those schools don't dress any special way now, though some very old-money guys still do. As far as social class, yes, it's very /fa/ to go there.
Upper class: Dropped out of an Ivy or slacked off at one, but just as likely dicked around at a no-name school. Either way it doesn't really matter.
Upper-middle-class: Went to an Ivy. It was very important.
Middle Class: Probably didn't go to an Ivy, but if they did they felt very intimidated and developed even deeper image issues than they already had.

Good universities aren't scams if you actually belong there and will leverage everything the institution offers to further your career.
Paying Yale money for a crappy private university or to slack off at Yale is definitely a scam that lots of people fall for though.

I know a guy who went to columbia, least fashionable guy I've ever met, pure le classy gent shit. Guy carried a thesaurus with him and was an outspoken athiest.
