it took me awhile to appreciate, but it's a wonderful scent and very masculine for a citrusy aquatic. really underrated among Creed scents, too, as i rarely see it mentioned and gets more mixed reviews than their others on Fragrantica and Basenotes. imo only GIT and Himalaya are clearly better from that house

I've yet to really find a year-round signature. I live in the southeast U.S. where it gets really hot and humid in the summer, and then decently cold in the winter.

If I had to pick one, it would be Dior Sauvage. I don't wear it on extremely hot/humid days, but other than that I think it works well in all seasons.

Mine is Rose 31. It's fresh and sweet (but never cloying!) in the summer and woody and warm and comforting in the winter.

Generally I always liked switching up my frags from season to season, preferring light citrusy scents in the summer and gourmands for winter, but this is one of the first I find works year round.

Hello /frag/general,

Any experience or opinions on solid colognes?

I'm soon to go on a jaunt around europe for a few weeks and am intrigued by the idea of liquid-less scents; would certainly remove the hassle glass bottles and liquids add to packing and traveling these days.

They seem fedora to me, but I can't deny the practicality of them,or at least the idea of them. Lighter, no chance of breaking or spillage and they get around the checked-in liquid limits.

But do any of them actually smell nice?
How about
>"do they smell nice for what they are: a compromise in the name of pragmatism?"

Or is it all just shit?
>>
>>11450412
How expensive are those?

I knew hippies who would mix herbs and coconut oil to rub on themselves and they seemed to like it.
>>
>>11450426
30-40 bucks or so seems to be about the average.

>I knew hippies who would mix herbs and coconut oil to rub on themselves and they seemed to like it.
I would imagine that one could just recreate that shit at home, the one in the pic, alfred lane, only uses natural waxes and oils.
But apparently then with these kinds they retain that base waxy/earth scent.

There's some other brand that does away with the waxes and nature shit and is pure scent.

They're meant to last for ages, and apparently you only need very little in regards to application.

Never tried that shit, just what I've read which is why I'm asking here.
>>
>>11450478
>I would imagine that one could just recreate that shit at home
Oh yeah, and it seems like it would be a major hassle. I certainly couldn't be fucked experimenting with a whole bunch of shit.

Let me ask this to the perfume notes experts and shit, I'm looking for a scent I smelled a very long time ago in a place like pic related, pine woods like those, the ground covered with branches, dried leaves and dried pine fruits.
As I walked through I'd get this smell, not damp or fresh, not really green either, I'd say it was woodsy, but like incense. I don't know if it was one distinct smell or the combination of the trees, branches, moss, etc.

Anyone knows what could that smell be? And maybe what perfume has that vibe. Thanks for any response.

Odeur 71 is a good deal since it's $135 for 200 ml, meaning you can spray on a bit extra without worry. It really has a nice green/woodiness with something metallicness/inkiness

Greenbriar is straight up described as: "
It is blended with Sawdust, Fresh Cut Hay, Worn Leather Work Gloves, Pipe Tobacco and a healthy amount of Dirt. There is also a faint whiff of cotton overalls covered in Axel Grease..."

So, you tell me, cutie.

What's that smell that all the department stores and some clothing stores (e.g. Banana Republic) has?

They all have some sort of subtle cedar/sandalwood/some sort of spice (red pepper?) mix going on.

Is there a way to get that as a home scent without having to burn candles all day?
>>
>>11450412
Le labo has some nice ones but desu I've been travelling for ten weeks through Europe with three sample sized vials of EDPs and they're nowhere near being finished. Kilian has really pretty travel bottles but a regular spray vial that g et from luckyscent or sephora or wherever would be fine too
>>
>>11452598
There are traditional diffusers (like Jo Malone), contemporary diffusers (like the hourglass or electronic diffusers from Diptyque and Tom Dixon's charcoal diffuser) and the option of incense (e.g. Fornasetti, Frederic Malle). In chain stores they likely use something like a linen spray or a mix of oils diffused through the ventilation.

Wearing Armaf Club de Nuit Man Intense today because I gave my bottle of Aventus to my dad on Father's day.

CDNMI is not even close to Aventus. Not at the opening, and not at drydown. I don't even know whether Armaf intend for this to be a clone, it's so far off. It's not horrible after it settles down for half an hour, but it's no Aventus.

To salvage the wear, I've added a few sprays of La Yuqawam. Together, CDNMILY actually layer very nicely.

If people who haven't been right next to you for a few minutes can smell it than you've applied too much.

I do one spray straight to the chest right after the shower. The general rule of thumb is one to three sprays. Different areas of your body release different amounts of heat and has different types of skin that will smell different on their own but also interact with each perfume differently.

Fragrances, if you have yet to notice, are all about subtlety. This means that you need to do a lot of experimentation. Try different perfumes on different body parts. There is no magic area to spray in order for the bitches to notice it. Just remember that for every person who mentions out loud how nice you smell, there are another dozen who are silently noting to themselves that you have put too much cologne on.

You don't want to rub fragrances in, you just want to apply, so don't do two "squirts" and rub it all over your body. Fragrances are very delicate chemically and rubbing destroys them. It can make a good fragrance smell bad.

Try one spray to the chest then ask a friend what they think. It will go a lot quicker than waiting for compliments. I like spray to the chest because the fragrance will get into your clothes, making them last much longer, and at the same time you are applying to a relatively warm area of the body with a diversity of skin types.

2-5 sprays on average, depending on fragrance, weather, occasion. Most 3-4. Avoid proximity to nose, i.e. face and front of neck, to avoid olfactory fatigue. Hair and clothes are cooler and thus hold top notes longer and increase surface area to increase projection. Under clothes mutes projection. "Pulse points" is a myth. As is rubbing, unless we're talking about rubbing hard enough to generate heat.

I do 1-2 sprays on chest so I get nice wafts throughout the day from under my collar, 1 on back of neck and 1-2 on forearms.

Hi /frag/! Help me pick up my first serious perfume maybe?
20, girl but not really femminine, climate is hot in summer and pretty cold in winter.
I'm looking for something that's versatile but I would gladly try some unique scents. I don't like anything sweet or "heavy" (grandma perfume, idk how to describe it) I'm also pretty meh on minty/very green scents.
I've tried on the black CDG play cologne and really enjoyed the pepper note. I'm also intrigued by CDG3, I'm an artist and I love the concept of it smelling like pencil shavings/graphite, sadly I can't find a sample for it
Price range is pretty poorfag but if I really like the scent I could go over 100 euros
Any advice is welcome and I'm gonna cop some samples based on the advice I get
Thanks!

Terre D´hermes seems to have a high concentration of an ingredient named Iso E Super.
Iso E Super is a synthetic ketone fragranceand is a very common perfume ingredient, providing a sandal/cedarwoody-like fragrance.

I bought it very cheap with some cosmetic hairwater (alcohol for perfume mixing) and for 24 euros I got two 50 ml bottles of Iso E super. It is similar to Molecule 01 by Escentric Molecules, only it is around a 100 dollar cheaper if it is self made. I sprayed 4 times and I like it as one of the better scents.

After wearing Dior Homme like crazy all last year and falling in love with it, I blind-bought Intense at the end of the winter thinking 'how could i not like it?' Man, I gotta say I'm pretty disappointed. It feels like a muted version of Homme. Warmer, more chocolatey, but in no way more "intense," imo. It's crazy how so many of these "intense" flankers end up seeming more dull than the originals.

And I have yet to try Parfum.

I haven't tried Ultime yet, but I used to wear the regular YSL L'Homme all the time, and still wear La Nuit in the fall and winter. Based on my experience with those two, I'm sure you did fine. Most of the L'Homme line is pretty easy to wear, and generally liked. It's probably not gonna stop people in their tracks, but you'll smell good for sure.

What's the general consensus?
>>
>>11461566
any recommendations for those which would stop people in their tracks?
>>
>>11460879
Right, I agree. And my general norm is 5 sprays as well, unless it's something super heavy like LIDGE.

I hit my bare chest with one, one on each wrist, one on left & right side of my neck, and sometimes if the scent is a bit light, I'll do a final spray on my chest with my shirt on to help with longevity.

You just have to decide what you're going for. Do you want people to notice? Do you want the confidence boost of random people telling you you smell amazing? Then spray it on generously. If you're gonna be self-conscious that you're choking people out, then spray less.

And if you are wearing perfume for the art of it, then you shouldn't be concerned about attention/compliments because 90% of these niche brands with obscure accords are gonna go unnoticed.

The reaction will be:
>oh something smells like burning leaves and raccoon piss
not
>omg your fragrance is so unique, i've never smelled anything like it before, you must be so elevated and enlightened. can we go fuck now pls?
>>
>>11461586
I'm assuming you know that it was a figure of speech, but I have a few that have garnered unsolicited compliments from strangers.

>Dior Sauvage
I went to an event recently that I work at bi-annually where it's 90% female. I got like, non-stop compliments, it was kind of fucking ridiculous. And in day-to-day it does very well too.

>Van Cleef and Arpels Midnight in Paris
This one is held dear to my heart, and is probably as close to a "signature" scent that I could get. I've had girls sitting next to me at bars tell me that i smell "fucking amazing." One girl told me that it gave me a really nice aura.

>Versace Man Eau Fraiche
Funny cause I'm not crazy about this one, just wear it for running errands, gym, grocery store, etc. But I've gotten numerous compliments from girls

>Creed Aventus
I don't own this, but it is notorious for getting mad compliments.
>>
>>11461503
does repeatedly spraying in a cup and than using the atomizer fuck up the fragrance?
>>
>>11461639
I just thought of another funny story about an experience that I've had with Sauvage. I was meeting co-workers in the hotel we were at for dinner and I'm always the youngest one by far. I'm in late twenties, everybody else is 40's+. I was last to meet up in the lobby, so I walked up where my co-workers were standing in a circle. One of the women I work with looks over at one of the men in our group and says "Oh Jim, you smell amazing tonight" and he said "Not me, I'm not wearing anything." And then she realizes it was me, etc. etc. Not great story now that I'm typing it out, but my point is, these are all rich middle-aged guys in this group with us, so I guess it made me smell like a rich middle-aged guy? anyway...

>>
>>11460879
Where do you apply after a shave? Skin around the neck tends to be sensitive and is prone to rashes if a fragrance is applied, that's why I'm asking.
>>
>>11462384
Back of the neck or behind ears
>>
>>11462384
Shaving and fragrance have zero to do with each other. The last thing you want to apply to your skin after the trauma of shaving is drying alcohol. Proper "after shave" is a moisturizing balm. Besides, you don't want to apply scent anywhere near your nose, like your face and front of neck, because you won't be able to smell it due to olfactory fatigue.

>Try Bleu de Chanel.
>If it had a tag line it would be "dark and masculine."

>>11461682
Hi. I meant like is doing pic related ok. Does spraying into a funnel to transfer the fragrance hurt the fragrance at all?
>>
>>11464454
Some people claim that atomizing the fragrance (spraying it) into another container messes with the molecules/composition of the fragrance when you go to respray it from your travel bottle.

But, unless your fragrance is in a flacon, or you can completely open the top of your bottle, there's no way around this. But I like the travalos that I posed here >>11461503 because you don't have to use a funnel, or truly "atomize" your fragrance. You stick the atomizer stem into the bottom of the Travalo and pump the fragrance in there. So it "squirts" more than it atomizes.

The short answer to your question is, most likely no - spraying into the funnel is not going to hurt anything as long as you're clean about it
>>
>>11464454
The first thing I do with any new fragrance is to fill a 5ml travel decant. Perfume sprayers are all different - some (Dior, Bond) allow you to slowly pump juice without any atomization at all, while others (Versace Signature) are nearly all mist with every press. Either way what's more important is that you seal the decant vial tightly to prevent air seepage or leaks, as that's what causes fragrance to go stale.
>>
>>11464685
Dior atomizers are pretty GOAT really.

And yea, nothing worse than a leaky decant. I bought a 30ml bottle of Allure Homme Edition Blanche from a guy on a FB group. He sealed it well and everything, wrapped plumber's tape around it etc. But it still fucking leaked in my toiletry bag when i flew with it. Now the bag and everything in it smells like Chanel, so that's cool I guess?

>>11465074

Going to get 2-3ml sample of this since to me there's no point buying a whole bottle, would never wear it often enough but want to have it in my collection.

Was wondering hypothetically since it's parfum extrait (~40% parfum), has anybody ever tried slightly diluting fragrances of this strength with their own perfumers alcohol? If so, how did it go?
>>
>>11465074
>>11465351
keeping them upright will help a little, but it's probably changes in air pressure that's causing the leaks.

I had a similar problem with my fountain pens and the solution to that is to either fill the converter fully or empty it and refill after arriving. That's not really viable with samples, I know. Sorry.
>>
>>11465406
Just a better seal should do the trick. My full bottles I take with me never leak.
>>
>>11465406
>it's probably changes in air pressure that's causing the leaks
It's definitely air pressure. Keeping pens nib up and vials seal up will help as all that escapes should be air. It's when the ink/juice is at the exit point that the air behind it can push it out. That's why a full pen won't leak.
>>
>>11454560
It got here today! I do like it. Smells like run down farm equipment.
>>
>>11465386
I've never done it, but it may change the scent drastically. Even the EdPs and EdTs of some frags are very different and that's usually just a 7-10% change in dilution. Can't imagine what going from 40% to, say, 20% fragrance component would do.

Really you shouldn't be so paranoid about that. For one thing, the chances of that happening are really slim unless you're wearing Aqua di Gio, Cool Water, Le Male, or one of the ultra-mainstream fragrances like that.

And even so, if that is your biggest concern, there are plenty more unique and obscure fragrances out there that you can delve into if you feel so inclined. IMO, the sweet spot is to wear something semi-recognizable without being one of the obvious ones I listed above. Otherwise people may not even be aware that you are wearing anything. They'll just think something smells like a pile of burning leaves and pencil shavings.
>>
>>11470825

I think the most times I may have smelled a particular fragrance on someone in the wild is probably Cool Water or something resembling it. It was maybe like seven times IN MY LIFE. Trying to think of other good fragrance/compliment stories, but most of them aren't stories, it's just times I've gotten compliments.

There is one other time though, that again involved Sauvage (sorry, but the hype is real on that shit. It's gotten me the most compliments by far out of everything I own). I think this is a good story to tell, because it shows you that people often times notice your scent without giving you a compliment (although I got compliments in the end).

Walked down to a local bar/restaurant, semi-upscale place. I was by myself, and it was a weekday so the place was kind of slow. Saddled up at the bar, and ordered a drink. It was just me, and two women at the bar. They're in their late 30's. Long story short, they invite me to come sit next to them and I end up chatting with them for the next couple of hours. One of them in coming on to me pretty blatantly. Anyway, to make a long story short, when it was time to go, I gave them both hugs and one was like "it was so great to meet you! blah blah blah! oh, and you smell amazing!" and the other chimed in "omg you're right, he does smell amazing!"

So again, that goes to show you that they obviously had noticed already that I smelled nice, and it took them the entire evening to tell me out loud that they liked it. Whereas they could've just been thinking it all night and never told me. You know? So some times if you're worried that people aren't picking up on your frag, chances are they probably are unless you're wearing something really close to the skin. Sorry for the blog post, hope it was at least interesting to someone.

Oh and btw, I got the one girls number. She texted me a few times, but I wasn't really interested (i have a gf). I just like testing myself to see if I "could" get them some times, ya know?

Hmm Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille isn't exactly similar to London, but scratches the same itch, so to speak. It's not exactly obscure, but I really really doubt you'll casually run into somebody else who wears it.
>>
>>11471197
Yea any designer brand is going to be mainstream to an extent, but there are certainly different levels of popularity. And that, also, will be affected by where you live. For example, here in the southeast US, not a single person that I've ever come into contact with has been aware of or familiar with the house of Guerlain even though they are a staple of the fragrance world and been around forever.

Just like others have stated, the only fragrances I've ever detected on people are Cool Water (or a fragrance that is copying cool water), Acqua Di Gio, Le Male, Spicebomb a couple times, and (this may be more for my region/country) Abercrombie's Fierce.

Light Blue is certainly popular in that it's from D&G, it is easily accessible, it had a decent marketing campaign put behind it, etc. But I've literally never smelled it on anyone, nor have I ever heard somebody talk about it.

Light Blue for women on the other hand is way more popular and I smell it often.

Am I the only person who despises Tobacco Vanille? I got it as a 5ml sample last time I bought some TL and wore it once and never again. There is no masculine element to it. You just smell like a shitty cloyingly sweet vanilla candle and it sticks around for fucking ever. I can't even detect the tobacco in it. If it's there it's gone within 5 minutes.

I actually felt the same way when I first tried it. I don't own it and probably never will (cheap-skate), I bought a sample to test it out though. I pretty much 100% agree with your description of it for the first wearing. But I tried it again a good while later and actually quite like it. Keep in mind, it is strictly for fall/winter. It's just too much for warm/hot weather.

This girl who used to work with me would sometimes comment positively on my fragrance, but one time I was wearing Havana and she was standing behind me waiting for something and I heard her inhale deeply through her nose. Never said a word, but that's my favorite "compliment."

I need a new fragrance for the hospital. It MUST smell clean, not heavy cause in a hospital we may Hagar contact with allergic people. Last one were 212 and bleu. Thanks.

Damn, I am a big fan of frags, but if you work in a hospital, I'd just wear nothing. Surprised it isn't policy frankly, unless you're in the Middle East or some place.
