If I had to guess, I'd say since they're a little big they didn't break in evenly. Since your foot can move around a little inside the shoe, the shoe doesn't follow every move of your foot, creating the crease you described while keeping other parts relatively stiff. Because the upper is still stiff, it makes the crease sort of sharp and that's why it digs into your foot.

I disagree with the other guy. I don't think the quality is that good. Mine creak a lot whenever I open them. The joints just don't seem that well made. They're on par with the $20 glasses I have. Kind of disappointing, but $95 is a good price for both the lens and frame. Maybe I'm just not used to plastic frames. Mine have held up so far though.
